Sports Kings Mock Draft 1.0

Check out this mock draft & see who the Texans draft:

http://sports-kings.com/?page_id=8042

Feedback is always appreciated, good or bad, as there will be multiple versions done between now and the draft. Having fan input will definitely be taken into consideration for each mock. I am an avid tweeter & always try to respond to inputs or questions as they come up. Thanks!

Also, specifically for the Texans, I wrote an article on what their season might have looked like without the Schaub injury, comparing Schaub & Yates stats as well as the team's overall performance while each was under center:

CB/S are listed as needs? Our Safety corp is actually rather deep especially if they brings Demps back. CB group is already full of very young players why add more?

And no thanks to a 5-10 190 pound WR in the 1st. You can find a WR with a similar build in a later round that could be just as good.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

I think that's listed as a need purely for upgrading reasons

Barber could be gone, probably could use an upgrade over some guys, possibly Nolan & Kareem

You make a good point; my rationale was they do need a stretcher to create more room for AJ. What do you think are the Texans biggest needs?

Think you went right with a WR in the first.

I would place OG depth in there somewhere before corners and safety.

After WR, it's a toss up between NT & OG

I think it will depend on what happens in free agency

Can't see them taking the small-ish Wright. WRs are too important in the Texans' scheme as run blockers.

It will be Sanu or some other, bigger guy.

You're right.... he's too small to be the impact guy Kubes wants...

….and this dude has got to be capable when one day, hopefully far in to the future, becoming the #1 Wr when The Greatest hangs up his cleats.

WR for sure, but no way he takes Wright with Jones, Sanu, or Toon still on the board.

The only argument one can make for taking a guy like Wright

Is looking at Steve Smith in Carolina. He’s a demon against opposing defenses now that he has a legitimate QB throwing to him again.

My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.

Wright is tempting.

The Texans are lacking a really scary, YAC speedster, and he would definitely fit that bill. I just think Kubiak will demand more blocking ability than he brings.

As to what you said about the Colts at #1

there are 38 million reasons why Manning won’t be traded. Manning will almost certainly be cut, but you got the pick right.

We will take Sanu, toon, or jones before we take Wright.

I believe quite strongly that Cleveland will take both RG3 and Wright and keep them together as long as possible.

OLB First Round

The most important position for the 3-4 Defense is the OLB position. Mario will not be back next year. Too many other teams are willing to drive the Loomis truck to Mario’s house and sign him to a max contract. The Texans will not offer max contract when they already have a top defense without him. Without Mario there is no depth at the OLB position. At other positions of need we still have depth (NT, WR, G).

Round 1- OLB Whitney Mercilus/ Andre Branch

Round 2- WR Nick Toon/ Brian Quick

Round 3- NT Josh Chapman/ Kheeston Randall (Wade prefers lighter, faster NT’s)

Round 4- WR Joe Adams/ TY Hilton (speed receiver)

Round 5- OG Tom Comton/ Lucas Nix

Round 6- ILB Tank Carder/Demario Davis

Round 7-C William Vlacho

Don’t be surprised if Houston drafts a TE that they plan to use as a WR. A second corner is a position of need. The Texans have plenty of talent on the roster to compete for the 2nd CB position. The draft will not have talent to trump what the Texans already have at CB at the position they are drafting. They will be better off securing a CB in free agency such as Kansas City’s Brandon Carr.

The cap is more flexible than you think

Between “not likely to be earned” bonuses set up as Mario gets into 14+ sacks, back loading the contract to pay more money in a bigger cap year, and clearing space by letting Leinart, Allen, and Fucoby go, getting all of our FA’s back this year should not be too difficult.

Guaranty Vs. Incentive Based Compensation

Teams that use the 4-3 defense will be looking hard at Mario. Teams such as Buffalo, Seattle, Tampa Bay have the cap space and need a dominant DE. The Texans can offer an incentive based contract to Mario, but other teams can use their extra cap space and offer guaranteed money upfront with a big signing bonus. The Texans don’t have much cap space to play with and they need to sign their other players such as Foster, Myers, and Dreesen. Mario will be looking to beat the contract that Charles Johnson signed last year with over $32 million guaranteed. Players are getting smarter about their contracts and know that more guaranteed money upfront is in their best interests.
