2012 Senior Bowl: Who Are You Keeping An Eye On?

With no NFL playoff games this weekend, we turn our attention to the Senior Bowl. The North and South squads spend the week practicing in Mobile, AL under the watchful eyes of Leslie Frazier and Mike Shanahan, respectively, before taking the field for a 3 p.m. CST kickoff on Saturday.

In case you're not familiar with who's actually playing in this exhibition, here are a couple of links to the rosters (North here, South here) for Saturday's game.

Star-divide

Anybody you're particularly interested in as a possible future Texan? And will you be watching the game on Saturday afternoon?

Dwight Jones

Want to see him in play since I don’t follow college ball too closely.

My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.

kelechi Osemele

I’m pretty sure I spelt his name wrong but he is the Olineman from Iowa State. He would be perfect at RG if we could get him in the 2nd. Dude is huge and I believe he has the longest arms at the senior bowl which is always a good thing for guards

by Zukywich08 on Jan 25, 2012 9:58 AM CST via iPhone app reply actions

he is big, almost 350

I wonder if he can move the way the Texans zone-blocking requires and also be able to block on passing downs against the quick inside-outside moves of guys like Freeney.

I'm also liking Coby Fleener in the second

I know a lot of ppl are gonna start making tight end jokes lol. I don’t think we will be resigning Joel Dreessen and we run a lot of 2 tight end sets. He is like a bigger version of Owen Daniels at 6’6". Has real good hands and is pretty fast for his size. Only problem is his blocking but that will improve over time

by Zukywich08 on Jan 25, 2012 10:04 AM CST via iPhone app reply actions

WR in the 1st, a 6'6" TE in the 2nd?

I could work with that. I bet Schaub could too

I have been going with Coby Fleener for awhile.

Think we really should consider him. Three TE set will be Daniels, Casey, and Fleener.

i heard of this fleener fela

when lance Z talked about him…he was thinking in the 1st round!!! wonder if he will be there in the second????

but i like the idea of him because he will be more of a mismatch early in his career vs a receiver…we just need another throwing weapon that can stay healthy….

Wouldnt mind picking him up in the first

and getting a WR in the second round. WR is deep this year and we could get somebody like Nick Toon, Dwight Jones, or Sanu who all im sure can get the job done as the #2 reciever. Fleener is just like Graham from the Saints. He has about the same size and use to play basketball

I’m saying we get a WR in free agency tho. Somebody like Robert mecheam who won’t command the big dollars. He would be a perfect #2

Kendall Reyes out of UConn

Has really been getting a ton of praise in early practices. He’s a 6’4 300 lb DT, who I feel would be a great fit in Wade’s system. He’s quick and a good pass rusher but can still hold his own against the run and has room to put on more weight. A lot of people are talking about him as a possible first rounder right now so he may not be on the board when we pick, but if he stays in the second round range, I’d love to take a shot.

by was385 on Jan 25, 2012 10:53 AM CST reply actions

I think this is the draft where the Texans pick up a high round DT (1st to 3rd round)

Yes, keep an eye on this guy.

I can see them picking up a DT who comes in and backs up Cody next season, learning the position in Wade’s D. If he’s good, he could be transitioning into a starter role in a couple seasons. They would have to move Earl Mitchell, probably platoon him behind Pro Bowler Antonio Smith at DE to do this. But, it is time to select a DT who can be that “Wade 3-4 NT” of the future.

I watched some of the South 1on1 drills yesterday.

Jeff Fuller looked horrible. Slow, dropping passes, getting jammed, poor routes.
Theyre really was one maybe two that stood out.
Dwight Jones looked like he had the skill set to be a successful wide out in the NFL. Quick out of his cuts, nice hands and good size. Wherever he goes he is going to make an impact.
Another that I noticed was Juron Criner from Arizona. He was on a 15 yd comeback route, sold the go route well, and even with great coverage turned and one handed a horribly thrown ball. Kid has hands.
Chris Rainey has a rediculous amount of speed.
Edwards from UH seemed decent. Nothing stood out too much on him.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Texans use a 6th or 7th rounder on Edwards

Maybe that will finally kill the Trindon experiment.

by Mumford on Jan 27, 2012 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

He may not be as fast as Trindon who is world-class fast

…but, Edwards has proven he can run routes and catch balls, because he has caught many. I think the jury is still out on Holliday. Maybe he proves himself next season. But, it’s been two seasons now. I know they invested a draft pick for him. At some point, you have to give up on him so that his spot can be given to another young player looking for a chance. A 6th or 7th rounder on Edwards doesn’t sound unwarranted. I can’t remember what the rules are on practice squad eligibility, maybe someone can help me there, but I know there is a limit. Granted, Holliday has spent some time on IR, and I don’t know how that applies to Practice Squad time, either.

I agree.

If Edwards is there in the 6th-7th rounds I’d say pull the trigger. He would be a good project guy and maybe give the Texans a burner, just to play with. I know he doesn’t fit the mold of a typical WC guy, but he should be able to contribute on ST if he was dedicated to it.

I'm reading from multiple sources

that Dwight Jones’ stock is falling and he hasn’t looked too good.

I watched 15-20 minutes

of the 1on1’s. Most of his reps were deep balls that he tracked down nicely, and I saw a dig route that he ran and looked good in. In the limited amount of snaps I saw he looked good.

players im looking at

cb – kareem jackson.
Word out of Houston is that his third year will be really important in deciding his future. He has the skills to be a safety than a cornerback but if he could turn his head around there is a chance he could be a late round steal.

nt – shaun cody
The defensive tackle out of Houston / USC is considered to be a homeless man’s vince wilfork without all of the qualities that make wilfork a monster. His ceiling is his floor and an upgrade and the position with something bigger than a cardboard box would be a huge improvement.

wr – jacoby jones
The WR out of tiny lane college has a lot of potential. however he would probably be suited better as a cornerback or safety since those positions don’t rely on catching footballs to be successful. A team who has really good depth at corner could take a shot on him and develop him into a solid slot guy.

I never thought of

moving Jacoby to CB…. that would be interesting since he is fast.

lane kiffin

told him since he didn’t sign with Tennessee out of high school he’d end up pumpting gas.

So he’s already overachieved.

Heres what I hope happens -

We resign Mario, Foster (deserves it ) and Myers.

Sign (drum roll please) Pierre Garcon to be our #2! 26 years old, speedy, good hands and a true #2.

We take BPA at 26, or move back. OL MIke Adams, Zebrie Sanders, TE Coby Fleener (think he could be a Gronk or Graham) or IF Kubiak feels thee is a number one guy there who can eventually take over for #80 then a WR (I like Sanu so far…)

2nd round DT like Josh Chapman.

3rd round OL

4th round WR – Ryan Broyles/ Take a chance on Jeff Fuller possibly (especially if he has a chip on his shoulder).

by YohannDookeyblue on Jan 25, 2012 7:59 PM CST reply actions

Hasn't the knock on Garcon always been his hands?

I feel like he is perennially up there on the drops leader board.

Meh, for every great catch I've seen him make, I've seen him make a critical drop.

We already have a fast WR who drops passes.

If our guy is not there at #26

I say we ask Philly to trade their #46 and #77 for our #26. If we do we would have 2 picks in the 2nd round and 2 in the 3rd. I think we could still have a shot at Fleener (TE, Stanford); a good WR (Toon, Criner); a good OL and maybe a NT as well.
Philly would still have 2 first round picks, a 2nd round pick .. but no 3rd. They need more people to step in now as most of ours would be for depth.
What do you think?

Reed/Lofton, Moss/Carter, Holt/Bruce...

AJ/ Garcon?

I do like Sanu and Toon. IM also kind of high on Stephen Hill, Georgia – but he might be around til the 3rd round. Good year for WR’s//

between Sanu and Toon

can we get both and hope one figures it out enough to let our starting WR2 and let both Walter and Jacoby go?

Its all a big crapshoot anyway. I think we should trade down and get the most picks in the lottery and hope a few stick.
