Not sexy, but solid for them
They needed a defensive coach. The true key hire is going to be their OC and QB coach (with Luck being drafted)

He's gonna be too busy as the new Seahawks QB.
Seriously, I’ve seen it suggested elsewhere!

I think there's too much bad blood between them now
Sounds to me like Manning is pretty agg’d that the whole team has been dismantled around him. I’d be shocked if he stayed now.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
I don't know what to think
Focusing on the defensive side of the ball kind of makes me wonder if they really will let Manning go. Great hire for sure, but like Jay said it’ll be interesting who they bring in as OC and QB coach.
My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.
Next Hint is if the Colts keep Clyde Christensen at OC
If they boot Clyde anytime soon, who knows what happens.
As a Colts Fan, I’d almost like to see what a whole new staff could do with Manning as kind of a Finale Experiment, but not sure that’s how Manning envisioned the “Swan Song” of his career.
A new look Colts Team next season that’s for sure (Manning or not).

Who are Pagano's league contacts for OCs?
He really doesn’t have much NFL experience.
15 years in NFL and coaching since '84... quite a bit of experience actually
He’s been on staffs with the Ravens, Raiders, and Browns since 95 with a brief stint with Davis at UNC in 2005.
Of the “direct contacts” it seems Butch Davis at DC and Hue Jackson at OC would be options simply because they’ve worked with Pagano or have direct relationships.
John Pagano is the DC in San Diego but it doesn’t appear likely that he would join his brother in Indy.
Davis was the HC in Cleveland with Pagano on staff. Jackson was the QB Coach in Baltimore with Pagano as Secondary/DC.

Defensive coach
If I were keeping Manning, I’d probably hire a defensive coach. Then either keep the OC or hire a first time OC and tell him that Manning will be running the offense.
TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.
That's true, great point
Peyton does run the entire offense by himself anyway
My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.
I think they let Manning QB for one more year, to break in Andrew Luck
and groom Manning for OC or QB coach for 2013. I lean toward them making him OC, because hes been doing that for years anyway. They will just make it official.

on the other hand, because they need an OC so badly right now
They may just make him an OC this year.

by professortex on Jan 26, 2012 1:12 PM CST up reply actions
they are paying him enough
to be a player/coach.
But if he is healthy enough to play in 2012 and doesn’t get hurt, he’s the QB until he does get hurt. I think he has more than 1 more year if he doesn’t get a scary injury.
TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.
Ya, I just recently read that, the type of surgery he had won't affect his play negatively
That is assuming they have been telling us everything and the truth. But Irsay has been talking with him a lot. I could see the player/coach scenario.

I'm not sure I necessarily buy that.
There will be some loss of flexibility in the neck, to begin with. How much and if it will affect play is questionable. Also, nerve damage is slow to heal, and may never fully heal. Again the degree of any loss of sensation, strength, etc, remains to be seen. But I don’t think someone can simply say it won’t affect his play.

He's a 3-4 defense guy, right? He has a big job ahead of him if he plans to convert the Colts.
"How can an idiot be a policeman? Answer me that!"
-Chief Inspector Dreyfus
Thats what I was thinking.
The Colts seem to have a long way to go on the defensive side of the ball as a 4-3 team. Let alone a conversion to a 3-4 when you have two 43DE studs in Mathis and Freeney.
Rectum!? Damn near killed 'em!!!
by theSpaceCityKid on Jan 25, 2012 6:20 PM CST up reply actions
Maybe he'll soak Mathis and Freeney in Wade-Aid and turn them into OLBs.
After all, it worked on Mario.

-Chief Inspector Dreyfus
Those guys where the core of that D forever too
maybe they go full rebuild and trade them for a bunch of picks.
Only a sith deals in absolutes.
Mathis is a FA
I’d bet on him putting that place in his rear view mirror.
The Houston Texans: The Ron Paul of the NFL.
I wouldn't be so sure
When Pagano was interviewed for the HC job, Mathis tweeted about it with excitement. Granted, he can probably get a pretty penny on the open market, but if all else were equal, I think he might actually want to stay in Indy.
Yep
I bet all of their vet free agents walk. Who wants to be a part of a total rebuild in the prime of their careers? I wouldn’t.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
They've run more of a hybrid front in recent years
which suggests flexibility on the part of Pagano.
If they keep Freeney/Mathis (not a given), I assume they’ll still be predominantly 4-3.
Kubiak believes in you
I imagine the Colts fans will have to hear what we did last offseason
“This defense is built for the 4-3”
“They dont have enough 2-gap players in the front 7”
“No way player X can make the conversion to the new position”
When in reality they will be running the hybrid look you speak of and we ran all year.
Rectum!? Damn near killed 'em!!!
by theSpaceCityKid on Jan 25, 2012 7:53 PM CST up reply actions
well wade runs and unconventional 3-4 traditionally
not sure if pagano runs a 1 gap or 2 gap, he did have ngata.
Only a sith deals in absolutes.
I think Wades run both
Just known for running the one gap style more and fitting the D to the personnel strengths. I’m sure Chuck will do the same.

Who knows what he is?
He’s been a DC for two years at NC for one year and at Baltimore for one year. The rest of his career he’s been a position coach.
he was the DC at UNLV in 1991!

Wow. Talk about hiring a young, unproven guy.
From college position coach to NFL head coach, basically.
Is this Manning's new yesman?
"All our lives we're taught to get in line. The ones who conform never discover." - Undrafted Free Agent and NFL Rushing Leader Arian Foster
To me, it definitely seems like a "We're keeping Manning" hire.
He’s not the guy to hire to develop a rookie QB.
hmmm, I might see it otherwise
As in, this is a clean sweep. We’re going all new next season. New GM. New Head Coach. New QB.
I mean, who is next? Reggie Wayne, anyone? He’s a free agent and long in the tooth. They can just peel away the top layer and start all over…..
"All our lives we're taught to get in line. The ones who conform never discover." - Undrafted Free Agent and NFL Rushing Leader Arian Foster
Agreed
Players in their 30’s usually aren’t looking to stay for a total rebuild. They want to go to teams that have a shot at winning something.
I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
If I'm a Clots fan, I'm happy.
At least it isn’t Tressel, FFS, and this guy seems like he will bring some energy.

I don't know...
I’d much rather have Chudinski and the top QB (Luck or RGIII).
I mean Chud led the Browns to a top 10 offense.
This is another apple falling off the Ravens Defensive tree and becoming a head coach
…..joining Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan, Jack Del Rio, Mike Singletary and Rex Ryan.

never want to cheer for the colts ever but.......
I think its a great move. way better than jacksonvilles hiring. Everyone is saying manning leaves but why wouldnt you want him on your team if he is healthy. Or if you don’t want him Would 23 million dollar bonus paid to him be worth 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders if you trade him??
If Manning stays it's an ok hire, but if he leaves, I think it's a bad hire.
You need a offensive guru with a rookie QB, IMO.
Give em time to hire an OC and QB coach
That D is in bad shape, the obvious weakest link. A good OC can be enough w a rookie QB.

I am hopeful
that Manning goes elsewhere.
That team doesn’t scare me, even if Luck is a superstar. Manning on any team scares me. Get him out of our division.
TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.
the real question
is why would Manning want to train a whole new set of coaches?

Good, under the radar pickup
He will be their Wade Phillips, just not as quick as a turnaround
Not if they turn into the Arlington of the North.

Yeah. I'm definitely starting to get a "Jerruh" vibe from Irsay.

I thought P. Manning was the HC of the Colts.
"Fate seemed to be playing a series of extraordinarily unamusing jokes."- George Orwell, 1933, on being a Texans fan.
Irsay is now publicly criticizing Peyton, calling him "a politician."
Just how stupid is this MF, getting into a public popularity contest with Peyton-fricking-Manning, FFS?
If I’m a Colts fan, I’m getting a very bad feeling about the ownership situation.

Judging from his actions and comments lately
I’d say Irsay is either having a “mid-football-life crisis” or he thinks he’s Jerruh, like you said earlier.
