Referee Clete Blakeman calling our game (the one we had vs Steelers)

http://www.battleredblog.com/2012/1/6/2686989/nfl-referee-clete-blakeman-scheduled-for-texans-game

I remember the froth of venom we were spewing in this forum over that horrid officiating even though we came out of the game with a win. I’ll take you back to that week with this thread: http://www.battleredblog.com/2011/10/2/2464348/texans-17-steelers-10-ridiculous-officiating-34#79107433

So much for the NFL having a review and grading process for referees and NOT assigning them to signal playoff and Superbowl games eh?

He better get this game right. If there are any blatantly bad calls that swing this game resulting in a loss for the Texans, he might make history on YouTube defending himself against some 75,000 fans.

If our team gets beat by another team, I can live with it. If refs get involved and influence the outcome despite obvious evidence to the contrary, it makes the NFL look like a rigged pro-wrestling product.

Clete, you better not &*&#$ this up!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/20/AR2008092002057.html

Here are some highlights from the news article, but I highly recommend reading the whole thing:

The gaffes are tallied. A failure to call a penalty that should have been called is a six-point deduction. Calling a penalty that wasn’t a penalty is a 10-point deduction. An incorrect judgment is a deduction of anywhere from six to 10 points, depending on the severity. A perfect score would be 100.
At the end of the season, the grades are added up and the eight highest-ranking officiating crews qualify for the first two rounds of the playoffs. Those crews stay intact to work the first two weekends of the postseason. The final two rounds of the postseason, the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, are worked by mixed crews consisting of the highest-ranked officials at each position. (There also is an experience requirement; rookies can’t work the playoffs and it takes five years to be eligible for the Super Bowl.)
At the other end of the spectrum, the grades also determine which officials are in danger of being dismissed. The league sets what it regards as a minimum standard, and any official whose grade for the season falls below that standard is put on probation. If the same official misses the standard for a second straight season, he’s in jeopardy of being dismissed. The average annual turnover, including retirements, is about six officials, Pereira said. After last season, it was seven.

I’m not convinced this process is working. It’s either:

A) The talent pool of available referees is so shallow that we still have bad ones suiting up
B) The NFL is simply a rigged entertainment complex and not the athletic competition it claims to be, with direct manipulation to favor certain larger revenue markets and their teams
C) Corruption of some individuals within an otherwise legitimate organization

As a fan, I seriously hope it is not “B”. So that leaves us with “A” and “C” which means “some” referees (like Clete Blakeman and Bill Levy) are either inept or corrupt.

by MeMongo on Jan 6, 2012 10:01 AM CST up reply actions

I lean toward B or C

Some games seem to lean too far toward one team for it not to be either rigged by the NFL or officials on the take. The Seattle-Pitt Super Bowl, Hou-Indy in Indy this year are the 2 most blatant ones I can think of right now. Do you know how much money bookies made on the Indy game? Had to be emormous. I can see calling some penalties that could be called close on a team, but flat out ignoring penalties that everyone in the world watching the game can see against the other team screams its fixed.

by Coog on Jan 6, 2012 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

Clarification on B

I dont think the NFL picks the winners, but I am beginning to believe they tell the officials to keep the game close. And, they do this by calling penalties on one team, while ignoring penalties on the other.

by Coog on Jan 6, 2012 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

I think it's simple incompetence, coupled with endemic confusion

due to the NFL’s impossible demands on the judgement of officials who are not professionals.

I went there after the game last week for the afternoon games

It was alright as far as sports bars go. The food and drinks were on par with most. Nothing that stood out great or bad. Good atmosphere overall, and great service. The margaritas were good. The wings and quesadillas were good. Lot’s of TVs with a good mix of games covering all the NFL.

In fairness I prefer the beer selection at Yardhouse, but the service there can be questionable at times (lazy and snobby). They also sometimes have other sports on (not all NFL) so getting the right viewing spot can be a challenge.

Great news!

I have known a couple children with Down Syndrome, and met a few adults with it. The children are incredible, it is as though they know only how to be positive and happy. The adults I have met were able to lead fairly normal lives, with jobs and their own apartments and such.

Consider it a blessing. I wish I had the constant life loving mentality exhibited by some of those who have Down. There’s a lot to learn from them, and a lot for you to look forward to with your son.

From what I understand, they’re showing the game there for free… I’m guessing on one of the movie screens with 2$ off beers(which are normally like 8 bucks!). Does anyone know anything about it? I just signed up for Pay TV

I checked the listings last night, and the local Sky Sports channel has all the play off games. Normally it is only the AFC side.

So, after having it taken off me in July, I have forked out the $30 for a month of the Sport channel so that I may watch (and Record) the Texans first ever Playoff game. (And their 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th).

Kick off is 10:30am local time, just late enough for pizza, dorritos and beer to be acceptable.
