Kubiak: Cushing Has A Torn ACL, Will Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

Now, it is official from the Houston Texans themselves. Houston inside linebacker Brian Cushing has torn his left ACL and will have season-ending surgery.

"It's what we thought. Obviously, he tore his ACL. We lost him for the year. He will likely have surgery in the next two or three weeks when the swelling goes down," said head coach Gary Kubiak at his Tuesday afternoon press conference.

Cushing will be placed on the injured reserve list with no designation for return this year. In his stead, Tim Dobbins, the veteran journeyman, will step into the starting lineup with Bradie James. James will likely fill Cushing's role as the inside linebacker on nickel and dime situations. Mister Alexander and Jesse Nading are also names Kubiak threw out as potential inside linebacker depth. With Cushing heading to the IR, there is also an available roster spot for Houston to fill out.

I am not a psychic, but I imagine Cushing's injury and how the Texans will handle it moving forward will play a big role in tonight's Battle Red Radio (7 pm CT).

Pro Football Talk: Per League Source, MRI Confirms Cushing's Torn ACL

Roughly 15 minutes from head coach Gary Kubiak's afternoon press conference, Pro Football Talk has tweeted a league source confirms to the website that an MRI has confirmed that Houston Texans inside linebacker Brian Cushing has a torn ACL. During last night's game against the New York Jets, Cushing was cut-block from his blindside and fell to the ground. Though the former USC Trojan walked off under his own power, speculation has been that he has a torn ACL since the post-game.

The extent of the ACL tear is currently unknown, but we will probably find out at Kubiak's press conference 3:30 pm central time when the Houston head coach confirms the injury. We will update this StoryStream with Kubiak's comments and the extent of the tear, but chances are likely that Brian Cushing's 2012 season is over due to a torn left ACL.

Houston Chronicle's Ganguli: It Appears To Be A Torn ACL For Cushing, MRI Coming On Tuesday

Well, how does one cast a shadow over the first 5-0 start in Houston Texans franchise history? You discuss a possible season-ending injury to one of its franchise players.

The latest 160 characters about Brian Cushing's left knee injury are pretty bleak. Per the Houston Chronicle's Tania Ganguli, "It does appear to be a torn ACL for Brian Cushing, but he is having an MRI tomorrow in Houston and #Texans won't know for sure until then."

Again, it should be stressed - heavily stressed - that Ganguli says it appears to be a torn ACL. Nothing has been officially confirmed by the team or Cushing, and nothing really can be confirmed until Cushing has the MRI on his knee.

I say heavily stressed because the last time people were unofficially declaring a Texan done for the year, Kevin Walter a few years back, it turned out to be a minor injury. Official word should come at Head Coach Gary Kubiak's afternoon press conference. Until then, the city of Houston will hold its breath and hope the MRI comes back negative for Brian Cushing and his left knee.

Manning On Cushing: "Coach Told Us After The Game That It Looks Very Serious."

The Houston Texans are in the city that never sleeps and neither does Twitter with word about Texans LB Brian Cushing and his left knee injury. A few updates from Twitter shed some light on Cushing's status, but there is still nothing official.

Per Houston Chronicle writer Tania Ganguli, Houston Texans safety Danieal Manning said on air to Comcast Sports Network's James Palmer: "Coach told us after the game that it [Brian Cushing's left knee injury] looks very serious."

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips
told Nick Scurfield, "We'll see what happens. I don't think we've finalized anything on whether he's playing or not [Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers]."

It appears Houston will look for a more thorough examination of the left knee tomorrow morning. I would not expect the team to say anything official until after Coach Kubiak's press conference tomorrow afternoon.
