Is there a date for when teams can resign or negotiate with their own players?

by Jason Brown on Feb 10, 2012 5:50 PM CST reply actions

I think they can do that now

But I can’t imagine a scenario where Mario doesn’t test the market. Someone will overpay.

if they re-negotiate now

does it go against the 2011 cap?

yup. pretty sure this is it.

they can talk till they are blue in the face now, but can’t sign untill FA starts. The reason is so other teams can at least make an offer.

My money is on the Jets

They’re the one team in dire need of a pass rush

I don't think the jets have the cap space either.

They have to sign

1. Antonio Cromartie
2. Santonio Holmes
3. Braylon Edwards
4. David Harris
5. and they want to resign Brad Smith. All these guys are UFA.

Jets are in worse shape than we are.

Brad Smith was a Bill last year

And it is conceivable the Bills make a strong play for Williams. We supposedly are able to roll over 20 mil in cap space from last year, we already have a decent amount of cap space disregarding the roll-over, and are in big need of a pass rush. We’re also switching back to the 4-3 so Mario Williams could play his more natural DE position.

My guess is that the Bills may be enticing money wise and talent wise for Mario. He’d get to play next to two very good DTs in Kyle Williams (5.5 sacks and pro bowl 2010, injured in 2011) and Marcell Dareus (5.5 sacks as rookie last year). Those two could take a lot of pressure off of Mario.

Wouldn't mind that TBH. if Mario goes anywhere I want it to be the niners or Bills

(being my two favorite teams after Hou) with the Bills being the only threat to get him.

I could see the Bills making a big offer

I coud also see Tampa Bay making a huge offer, and I can see KC making a big offer

I would be mildly surprised if Tampa courted him.. They have a big need at WR with Mike Williams having a down year, and Arrelious Benn (2nd round, 2010?) not showing up.

As far as DLine goes, they took Gerald McCoy (DT, 1st round, 2010), Brian Price (DT, 2nd round 2010), Adrian Clayborn (DE, 1st round 2011), and DaQaun Bowers (DE, 2nd round 2011). They’ve invested a lot on the d-line pretty recently.

I'm pretty sure they will address WR in the draft.

Even so, they have more cap space than most other teams adn should they look for an FA WR, they still have enough to take a shot at Mario. Additionally, All their O-line is very young, Mario is a 9 year vet and could be a defensive leader for their young O-line, as well as the beast pass rusher that he is.

this of course not counting Fat Albert.

But then again whata leader he'd make

the only other long term vets they have are MCargo, Crowder and Haye

If Buffalo were to draft WM and sign MW…holy fuck
at that line

Mario – Williams – Dareus – Mercilus

they instantly go to having a top 5 DL in the league.

by BC5 on Feb 12, 2012 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

Even though his alleged character concerns worry me

my dream offseason would be drafting Quinton Coples and signing Mario Williams.

Two 6’6’’ 280 pound DEs that can get to the QB next to two very good DTs. That’s not a line you run on.

Atlanta, maybe.

They don’t have a 1st-round pick and they need pass rush help. Abraham’s getting old.

Fisher can trade back from the second pick if Cleveland will give him both their #1s.

Then he can still get his OT and WR, sign Mario and all of a sudden have a contender.*
