Sanu vs. Jeffery
I recently made a mock where I had the Texans taking Alshon Jeffery in the first instead of Mohamed Sanu I think a majority of you thought I was crazy or a dumb ass. So I decided to compare them as prospects.
Jeffery 6'4 233
Sanu 6'2 215
Jeffery has the size to be a lethal weapon in the red zone. Sanu may have a better build to catch more balls but I still have to give Jeffery the nod.
Advantage Jeffery
Route Running
Jeffery has been a decent route runner in his days at USCAR, and has shown that he may improve. But I have to give the nod to Sanu because his route running is one of his true strenghts.
Advantage Sanu
Speed
Both of them aren't going to blow you away with speed, but if I have to choose one it would be Sanu.
Advantage Sanu
Hands
It would not be to far fetched to say that Sanu has glue for hands. But then again Jeffery's hands are like super glue.
Advantage Jeffery
Ability to make defenders miss
When watching Jeffery play you always notice how defenders just bounce off of him. Sanu does not have the strength to make defender miss as well as Jeffery.
Advantage Jeffery
That was my reasoning behind picking Jeffery over Sanu. Sanu is definitely the safer pick, but Jeffery has a higher ceiling and does have the ability to become an elite reciver.
What are your thoughts. Am I still a dumb ass, or did I sway you one way or another.

I'm starting to come around on Jeffery
I think his size & hands will make a big enough difference, plus he should be able to develop into a better blocker in time. I don’t think he’ll be the next Andre, but I do think he could be an upgrade over Walter. Worse case scenario, if he’s packing a bit too much weight & he’s not that fast, we can always put him at TE

At best Jeffery will be a poor mans Plaxico
just too much risk there.. I’ve really started to want defense in the first (OLB, NT, or ILB) then Nick Toon (or maybe J.Criner) in the second
I hope we go defense in the first as well. But we may have two firsts.
TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.
Awright, you got me:
Two firsts?

I don't understand that website
It talks about how he couldn’t get any separation from Dennard, but fails to mention that he put up 150 yds and 2 touchdowns I think it was in the first half.

Yea, that seems a bit odd.
I’m not saying he’s wrong, but Jeffery has done some good things against some pretty good CBs. I suppose I’m just more impressed by a guy who grinds it out against tough competition than I am with a guy who dominates inferior competition. Jeffery has shown an ability to make catches against some of the top CBs in college football.
He makes a point, though, regarding the amount of confidence your QB would have to have to throw into those tight windows. I certainly don’t envision Schaub throwing the ball to anybody who doesn’t have a few steps on his defender.
There are so many conflicting opinions on Jeffrey. He's the definition of "boom or bust" it seems.
To scary for the 1st round, IMO.

That's why if we take him, we must double dip at WR
Get Jeffery plus either Tommy Streeter, Reuben Randle, or Juron Criner (I leave Toon & Dwight Jones off because I doubt they make it to #58)

Which we don't want to do. We need a NT and OL and OLB depth (if Mario leaves).
If our REAL guy is not REALLY there at #26, we need to take WRs later.

I still think we can get another good WR in the 3rd while getting a NT in the 2nd

It's a long shot, but I want a terrifying play maker out of this draft.
Jeffrey’s not that kind of player. Kendall Wright is, but he’ll probably be gone.

Kendall Wright would be the terrified player the second Walter isn't on the roster & Kubiak asks him to block the backside DE/OLB on a run play
Something I doubt he capable of doing without getting killed in the process

I'm saying eventually he won't be there, & I don't expect Wright would be able to do KW's job or Andre's job either
He’d be a wasted pick for us

Too rigid.
A play-making receiver who terrifies defenses would ALWAYS fit.

Dead WRs don't scare anyone
Which is what he would be the if we asked him block Terrell Suggs or James Harrison

Just like we didn’t ask Mario to cover TEs.

Then who's gonna keep that backside DE off Foster?
Can’t just leave him unblocked. If Wright can’t do the job, you’re just telegraphing your plays & blocking schemes with him in there. He just does not fit

Wright would have an immediate positive effect on the running game
by forcing safeties to back off.
Also, I don’t know why you are writing him off as a blocker, since that is reportedly one of his strengths. Would some blocking schemes have to be adjusted so that he wasn’t giving up 100 lbs? Perhaps, but I bet Koob and Dennison could find effective blocking matchups for him and still get that back side blocked.
I’ll put my name on it: if he’s there at 26, the Texans will grab him.
"How can an idiot be a policeman? Answer me that!"
-Chief Inspector Dreyfus
You're overstating the importance there.
It is the backside DE, after all. He’s going to be well out of position most of the time, and even on a cutback he’s unlikely to make the play given how quickly Arian gets upfield.
It’s not like Wright is going to be completely incapable of doing that, either. Give him a training camp and I guarantee you his speed and receiving ability more than outweighs the drop-off in backside DE cutting.
Sanu reminds me of KW
Decent size, decent hands, decent speed, willing blocker but nothing that really makes him special (although I admit my exposure to Sanu has been limited). I think if we take a player like Jeffery and he plays up to his potential it will take our offense to the next level.
On a side note, that website you posted isn’t totally off-base. I completely agree with everything they said about Burfict. I watched every ASU game I could last year specifically to see him and I was shocked by how such a highly touted player gave zero effort so many times.
by chuckydawgyall on Feb 11, 2012 7:25 PM CST up reply actions
I completely agree on this.
In my opinion, he’s unlikely to outplay Walter in 2012. And even three years from now, I don’t envision him being any better than Walter was in his prime. Given his skill-set and the offensive system he played in at Rutgers, he strikes me as a good fit as a slot receiver. But lining up on the outside against NFL corners, I certainly don’t see a potential game-changer in him.
serviceable or bust
I don’t see anything “boom” about him. I hope some team does something dumb and takes Jeffery early.
I'm still praying for Kendall Wright.

I'd hate to see Kendall Wright on the Texans because there's no way he'd be able to do Andre's or KW's job
No way in hell I see Wright coming in motion to block the backside DE without getting himself killed in the process

I don't expect him to do that.
I want him to catch a 15-yard slant and take it another 65 yards for 6.

However we're a running team & Kubiak wants his WRs to be able to block, so he has to do it eventually
If he’s not, we’re telegraphing our plays with him on the field. He can’t even replace what Walter does, & he definitely can’t replace what Andre does. Hell, for all the grief we give Jacoby, at least he can get downfield & block guys effectively. We shouldn’t be using a 1st round pick on someone who could barely replace Jacoby Jones & someone who would end up being a detriment to the Texans run game

I'd take Adams over Broyles everyday
At least Adams isn’t coming off an ACL Tear, but I don’t see either as a fit for the Texans. Truthfully, I like Marquis Maze as a late round steal

if we're keeping KW at WR2
like I think we are, this is the best prospect for us in 2012, I think.
He would help in games where we’re behind and abandon the run, and would change things up a little. But I doubt Smithiak takes him.
TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.
My thinking, exactly.

Jeffery

sanu vs. jeffery
I think neither will be suited up as a Texan in 2012.
One won’t fall to us, and we won’t take the other. Take your pick who’s who, but I think we’re going in a different direction.
TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.
i've got a better one for you...

even though we have a greater chance of being invaded by little green men from mars, who would you take?
id still take sanu.

i feel that the fact there’s such spirited debate between these particular 2 prospects means it’s pretty much a toss up. i dunno why but trading back and taking Toon out of Wisc. makes me more comfortable…crazy?
You must be real comfortable with foot injuries then. Are you Yao & Schaub's foot doctor??
If we trade back, I’m hoping to get both Tommy Streeter and either Juron Criner or Reuben Randle. Toon’s history of foot injuries is quickly taking him off my list

i'll say this...
1. injuries in college are not indicative of injuries in the pros. (i.e. Cushing)
2. i’d rather have a consummate professional/solid contributor in 2nd/3rd round than risky 1st rounder at such a high-bust position.
3. missing a handful of games for turf toe 2 seasons ago, with no recurrence does not worry me.
4. the stress fracture that caused him to miss spring practice was not an issue during the season.
all that being said, i understand the push to find a high-ceiling WR to replace Andre one day, and Toon isn’t that…Streeter however, i agree has “sleeper” written all over him with good to great measurables. i guess my point is if one of the elite WR prospects don’t fall to #26, then they should go for another position and pick up a couple solid prospects later in the draft and play the numbers game.
