Moving to Houston, figured a sports blog is the best place to go for advice
First, hello all. I currently live in Georgia, but I am moving to Houston this weekend for a new job. I am all for adopting the Texans as my second team (sorry, Stafford's Lions come first) and really most other Houston teams. My other teams are White Sox, UGA, and Clippers...so I don't think there is any bad blood there.
So I know nothing about Houston, and figured that the best place to really get advice on things is a SB Nation blog, so here I am. So, what areas should I consider living? I'm looking at downtown, the heights, and the woodlands. I really want to be where a lot of other single young professionals are...and of course be close to sports venues. I will be working near IAH airport, but I've heard that's not where you want to live. Here are some other questions I have that maybe you can help me with:
- is the traffic really that much worse than other places, like atlanta?
- is the toll road worth it if i will be driving from downtown to north of town daily?
- where are the best places to meet people?
- how do I not look like an outsider?
Really though, anything yall think I might need to know in my grand adventure of becoming a Texas girl would be great.
Thanks!

If you really want to fit in you should.....
1) buy a wrestling belt. nothing says texas like a biggo belt buckle
2) get some ostrich boots and a ten gallon hat. don’t forget the spurs and a lasso.
3) get a nice beginner horse to ride to work. don’t want an expert as they think they know better ways to get to where you need to go.
4) the best places to live are 5th ward and 3rd ward. culturally diverse and you should fit in just fine with your new attire.
5) cheer for all things dallas. houstonians admire everything about them and nothing says i love my big brother like a new tattoo or painting your new house with a dallas logo on it.

Welcome!
I live near The Woodlands, so here’s my 2 cents:
I’m married so I have no clue if downtown or The Woodlands would be better for someone single. However, TW area is MUCH cheaper to live in than downtown. I live across I-45 (the major freeway between Houston and Dallas) from TW and home prices are very affordable. There are also lots of new apartments/condos recently built in the area. Plus IAH is about a 15 minute drive for me.
YES traffic is terrible here. Also, Houston is spread out. My house to downtown is 27 miles. You just get use to it.
Get an EZ Tag for the toll roads (Hardy Toll Road runs from loop 610 up to TW) or else add 30 minutes + to most commutes North of town.
In TW there are multiple bars, wine bars, and social events going on so I would assume it’ll be easy for you to find other singles. Also, there are several larger churches in the area that I’m sure have active singles groups.
The best part of Houston, most people aren’t from here! You’ll fit in no matter what you wear. Be friendly, smile, and get involved…you’ll more than likely be welcomed with open arms.
Thank you Texans for 2011.
The 2012 season can't start soon enough.

one thing i can agree on is getting a toll tag.
will save you a headache and allow you to travel anywhere for the most part.

I appreciate that since I live in that area. It depends on where you go, what you like to do, etc. If I had to chose between downtown and TW…TW wins hands down. But everyone’s entitled to their opinion.
Thank you Texans for 2011.

I was talking about the "douches" statement.
that’s also why I stated in my original comment that I’m married and I’m not completely sure how the singles scene is in TW. I will say that with so many new places opening in TW, I’m sure the singles scene has improved over the last few years.
Thank you Texans for 2011.

Wish i could help
But when i stayed in houston i was living in sugarland which is way too far were you will be working.
2012 1st round draft pick is...............
If you want the suburb area
Then there are tons of choices, some near that have access to the gulf minor bodies, Say Clear Lake. There are some that are buried in trees, like The Woodlands, or Kingwood(Both have great golf) TW has a budding pedestrian area, but can be a bit pricey. Old Spanish Trail is a good area for close to downtown, and other areas like Rice Village, or Reliant.
I would get an apartment for like 3 months and so some exploring until you find a good deal. See what you like around the area.

I'll try and help
•is the traffic really that much worse than other places, like atlanta?
Probably. Beltway 8 (tolled) and 610 (aka "the loop) are our version of a parking lot during rush hour. However, if you’re a NASCAR fan, Beltway 8 turns into a track on the weekends. Get EZ Tag so you don’t have to stop, keep striving for the track record.
•is the toll road worth it if i will be driving from downtown to north of town daily?
Toll roads are almost always worth it. Houston is so freaking big and spread out that everyone drives, but not everyone wants to (can) pay toll.
•where are the best places to meet people?
Depends on your interests. It’s only cold here like 6 or 7 days a year, so we have a very active outdoor scene. “Outdoors scene” ranges from hunting/fishing, to sports, to working out, to gardening, etc. We also have a plethora of restaurants any just about any food category you can imagine. I think I’ve been to at least 100 bars in and around the area. There’s lots to do, and a lot of people at those places.
•how do I not look like an outsider?
Almost everyone is not from here. I think I’m 1 of like 12 that are actually native. Be friendly, say hello, smile at everyone. No one likes an asshole.
I don't understand "t-sip" as an insult. I like drinking tea, and when is being classy a bad thing?
this.
be friendly if it is in your nature. texas folks love friendly people.

Welcome to Houston!
I’ve been here 19 years now and love it. I’ll answer your questions and offer suggestions as well.
is the traffic really that much worse than other places, like atlanta?
I grew up in LA in the 80’s and Houston greatly resembles the insane traffic, explosive suburb growth and gang problem we had there at that time. I’ve had business travel to Atlanta over the years and that north area near Buckhead is the worst vehicle traffic I have ever witnessed at rush hour.
Houston is the 4th largest city by population, so it’s going to have traffic and you have to plan your timing around rush hour periods like any big city. The absolute worst corridor for vehicle traffic is Highway 290 (the Northwest spoke in the hub). Over the last 20 years there has been roughly a million homes built in the Northwest area and the morons running Harris County failed to consider the need to expand the main highway between that area and Houston. On the Southern end of the area, they have been doing construction on I-45 since the end of WWII (fact not just humor) and show no signs of ever completing it.
We finally got Federal funds to expand I-10 a few years ago which was a MUCH needed improvement to anyone living in the West Houston areas (Katy) or traveling to and from San Antonio on business.
You’ll want to avoid the 610 loop west between 3PM and 7PM or you’ll think you were back in Buckhead and gridlocked.
is the toll road worth it if i will be driving from downtown to north of town daily?
The toll road is absolutely worth it. The EZTag option is highly recommended for sanity in getting around the Houston area anytime. We don’t have rail transportation here, so you’ll be driving a car. Ignore that toy choo choo they installed that runs from downtown to the medical center. It’s value to most Houstonians has been exhausted in news updates on how many city buses and private cars it has destroyed as drivers learned to cope with the downtown nuisance.
where are the best places to meet people?
Restaurants/Clubs-Lounges are HUGE here. Houston is a town of friendly people who love to eat and drink. The food quality, quantity, and variety are incredible even compared to LA, New York, Chicago, etc. We have many celebrity chefs and popular (dare I say “trendy”) places to eat, meet and greet.
Here’s a quick list to consider to get a feel for the food, people, the scene etc:
Dinner & Lounge
Benjy’s – Heights & West U, restaurant/lounge atmosphere, great food and single mingling
Sambuca – Downtown, good food, more of a lounge
Reef – Midtown, mostly seafood w/ steak/chop options, celebrity chef (Next Iron Chef) Brian Caswell
Mo’s – Galleria, good steaks, great people watching/meeting
Max’s Wine Dive – Heights, great food and lounge
The Tasting Room – Galleria and City Centre (I-10/Beltway), great food and lounge
Happy Hour/Lounge/Sports Bar
360 Sports Lounge – Heights
Pub Fiction – Midtown
Yardhouse – City Centre
Houston Texans Grille – City Centre
Blue (at Brenner’s on the Bayou) – River Oaks
Then there are literally dozens of great places to eat BBQ, burgers, and gulf coast seafood where you can meet great folks. Too many to list!
Check out a few of these links for some research:

how do I not look like an outsider?
I doubt you could even if you tried. Houston is a massive melting pot where over 100 languages are spoken from as many cultures who migrated here over the years. You’ll fit in wearing a t-shirt, sports coat, full suit, western wear, etc. The business world here is mostly business casual ranging from golf shirt+slacks to suit and tie depending on the industry they are in and their role.
A few thoughts on locations:
Downtown or Midtown – A lot of “loft” and apartment options, trendy shopping/lounges/restaurants. Commute north not too bad (should be against traffic). Great location for being single and looking to meet others.
Heights – Honestly, it’s struggling between a movement to maintain the great history and style with infusion of younger couples/families and the pressure from surrounding crime influence seeking to take advantage. Great location, but you have to know where to go and not go, and you will have to be diligent with security. Lot’s of car break-ins and theft issues for some locations in the Heights. Just be on your toes and you won’t have an issue. Commute north would be easy for work.
Woodlands – Somewhat disconnected from Houston as it is self contained, but a fantastic area. Commute would be easy to your work location. Might be less interesting for a single person looking to meet others, but great for outdoor activities (golf, etc).
Kingwood - Similar to the Woodlands, but a bit closer to Houston.
Katy (West), Cypress (NW), Sugarland (SW) or Clear Lake (SE) would all have you arranging your gun collection by barrel flavor in less than a week with that commute. Great suburbs to live in, but terrible for working up north each day.
If I were you, I’d strongly consider Midtown or the Heights.

If you're going to be living downtown, you might as well not worry about the EZtag.
All you need to do is take 59 North to Will Clayton and that’ll get you to IAH. And as far as traffic goes 59 North (i.e. Eastex Freeway) is probably one of the least traffic-clogged freeways in town; or it was when I used to live in Humble.

Wrecked for this statement alone.
have you arranging your gun collection by barrel flavor in less than a week with that commute
I have family down there and have visited several times and agree 100% with MeMongo here. Even my brother who is between jobs has an EZtag. They have some kind of new option he was telling me about that one can pay as you go rather than a flat monthly fee? I’ve forgotten, but it was something like that, I’m sure the “natives” can straighten me out. lulz
Just my $.02
Even duct tape can't fix stupid
A monthly fee would be nice.
EZTag works like a reloadable debit card. You charge a certain amount to from either a credit card or bank account, and as you go through a tollbooth the cost of the toll gets deducted. I know use of an EZTag was worth a 25 cent discount on tolls versus cash, but I a, not sure if that is true anymore.
Since we use the Westpark everyday to get home, and sometimes use other toll roads, a flat rate would be very helpful.

As a Clear Lake resident, I can not tell you how accurately you just described the area.
Houston Texans: 1 Playoff Win.
Vince Young, Dunta Robinson, and Jason Babin: 0 Combined Playoff Wins.
First of all
Being a Georgia Bulldog, is there any way you can arrange a meeting for my father with Uga? He LOVES that dog.
I kid of course. But to add to what everyone here’s already said:
1. is the traffic really that much worse than other places, like atlanta?
Unfortunately, yes. But… if you get a place in the city, driving out for work and back in to come home isn’t as bad as vice-versa. If you settle in TW, you should be fine too. The really bad spots are on the mainlanes as you approach the loop and get closer to downtown during rush hour. And yes, avoid the loop at ALL costs.
2. is the toll road worth it if i will be driving from downtown to north of town daily?
Absolutely. Everyone else has already mentioned EZTag, so you know what to do.
3.where are the best places to meet people?
A few here touched on the active lifestyle here, and it’s true. All of our major parks have popular biking and jogging trails, and two of my best friends met new people by joining a kickball league. Softball applies here, too.
If you’re into the nightlife, Washington and Midtown are real popular among the well-to-do singles. I personally am worn out on both (noisy & crowded doesn’t do it for me), but everyone is different and should try it before they knock it. If you’re looking for a more laid-back nightlife though, Rice Village is worth a try. Can’t tell you much about TW, though; I guess we’ll have to trust Allen’s point of view.
Also, when you have a Saturday morning free that you’re willing to not sleep in, go check out St. Arnold’s Brewery just north of downtown. Very popular activity, cost-effective, and damn good beer to boot.
4. how do I not look like an outsider?
Just be yourself, and be friendly. Everything else will take care of itself.
Kubiak believes in you
Nobody has mentioned Montrose,
which is kinda like the Heights, only more gay and artsy. It varies from rough to rich, so you could probably find your economic settling point in there somewhere.
It’s very close-in, so if your job is in mid-town it’s perfect. It’s loaded with clubs, restaurants and bars, so there are lots of social opportunities.
"How can an idiot be a policeman? Answer me that!"
-Chief Inspector Dreyfus
I thought of Montrose and West U, but she's working up near IAH so that would be a bugger on the commute with the bottlenecks at 59 and common exits
Love some good eats over there though!
Oof. Right.
Those would be tough going north.
"How can an idiot be a policeman? Answer me that!"
-Chief Inspector Dreyfus
If she's working at IAH, Humble would be the best spot for her
It’s right next to the IAH, & there are a bunch of nice new apartments on Beltway 8 off Wilson Rd near the Redstone Golf Course. My sister has a one bedroom bath apartment that goes for just over $900 a month. If you’re looking to buy, there’s some townhomes in Fall Creek just off Beltway 8 that you could be interested in. You’d be able to go up Mesa Dr, jump on Beltway 8, turn onto 59N, then go to Will Clayton. 10-15 minute drive at the most to IAH, traffic wouldn’t be much of an issue, neither would toll roads since Mesa Dr is the last exit before the tolls start. I see what you did there...
Houston Texans: 1 Playoff Win.
Vince Young, Dunta Robinson, and Jason Babin: 0 Combined Playoff Wins.
Eh
The few times Ive been in Atlanta it feels more uncomfortable in the summer then it does in Houston.
You must have picked some bad days.
Average average daily high temp. in Atlanta is about 88 F.
In Houston, the average high June thru August is almost 92, and the humidity is higher.

Freeways.....
From Houston but live in Georgia. The “feeder” is your friend as a newbie living in Houston. Atlanta freeways suck. If you miss your exit, you have to drive 5+ miles to get off on the next exit and you might not find your way back to the freeway to turn around. Houston’s freeways are much easier to navigate. These guys are giving you great advice. By the way….the weather is exactly the same in Atl. and Hou. during the summer. Little colder a little longer in Atl than Hou. in the winter.
I'm not drunk occifer......I'm just just speaking in cursive!!
thanks. i bought a gps today so hopefully the roads/traffic will be less of an issue
and agreed about the advice. this post is the best decision I’ve made in weeks, besides accepting the job that is bringing me to Houston. can’t wait till football season so yall can teach me about being a Texans fan.

Thing you need to know about being a Texans fan
1. If you’re going tailgating, you need four things:
A) A parking pass
B) money
C) an empty stomach
D) a strong alcohol tolerance
Reliant Stadium is the best tailgating stadium in the NFL, wide selection of food available, & lots of various forms of alcohol (mostly beer though)
2. You must hate all things relating to Bud Adams & the Titans (a.k.a. the BESFs, someone here should give you the link explaining this)
3. Learn the lingo (someone please provide her the link to the BRB Glossary)
4. This moment should become a great sense of pride for you

5. Don’t be too cocky, things have backfired on us a lot over the years. In other words, this

6. Most importantly of all……….

awesome. a guide!
1. i will do fine with this as i did just graduated from the #1 party school, University of Georgia. I have attended and survived multiple editions of the worlds largest outdoor cocktail party. so apparently my life has been training me to become a texans fan
2. i hate Univ. of Tennessee so my hatred of the state has already begun. consider the titans hated
4. i remember this vividly. and it was awesome
5. did i mention i am a fan of a school in the SEC. overconfidence is built in
6. i dont know if i hate the whole team yet. but Romo can fall into the abyss and i would not be sad. ESPN however, would not know what to talk about

As you settle into Houston you will discover two irritations related to being a Texans fan and/or resident of Houston:
1. The lingering cloud of funk remaining in Houston of former Oiler fans who somehow have convinced themselves that the Titans are anything worthy of support despite their departure to Methopotamia. What’s even more amazing is the fact that they, by default, support that miserable scumbag owner. Additionally, these same oxygen deprived carbon units think Vince Young was still the better choice to draft in 2006. You’ll see less and less of these folks as the Texans ramp up their dominance in the AFC and make room on the bandwagon, but you’ll really scratch your head when you run into any of these people around town.

2. The other thing you will notice is the waft of limitless arrogance from Cowboys fans. Jerrah has masterfully marketed that franchise over decades and it permeates throughout the State, with strong concentrations in San Antonio and Austin. There are pockets of this poison throughout Houston, but expect that to recede as that team continues to struggle and the Texans rise to success. The transition will be entertaining to watch.
The second note on Dallas is that if you go there for any reason, you’ll get the sense that a high majority of folks living there think they are a mini-Los Angeles. Arrogant, metropolitan-esque, plastic surgery gone wild, shallow focus on keeping up with the Jones’ (cars, house, golf country club memberships, private schools, private parties etc.) It’s really the oddest element in Texas. If you travel through the rest of the state you’ll find a common theme of good southern family oriented folks who will gladly give you directions to the nearest BBQ place, or tell you about someone famous from the town who still pumps his own gas and lives right down the street.
If you really want a great weekend experience shortly after arriving, grab a night at a bed & breakfast in Fredericksburg in the Hill Country and eat some German food at any of the restaurants on main street as you casually shop around. Spend another night on the Riverwalk in San Antonio or (if you want a more upscale spa experience) enjoy a night or two just north of San Antonio (12 miles) at La Cantera and stay at the Weston resort, or the Hill Country Hyatt near Sea World or the new JW Marriott resort near there. Depending on which you choose you can enjoy golf, jogging/hiking, horseback, etc.
Again, glad to have you joining us as a Texans fan and a fellow Houstonian. I think you are going to like Texas!
Also, my wife and thousands of other former Oiler fans successfully transitioned to Texans fans
I was by no means ripping former Oiler fans, just the ones who cling to the Titans beyond all reason.
OH, and if you do head out to the Hill Country and you like BBQ, stop in at The Salt Lick in Driftwood
No
No no no no.
Is Salt Lick good? Yes. Is it great? No.
Mueller’s in south Austin? Great! Louie Mueller’s in Tayor? Greater!

You name the type of food
and we have someone around the city that makes a great dish. Galveston and Kemah both have great seafood. The key will be where you live. Smaller hole-in-the-wall places are normally better than the chains (not to state the obvious or anything).
You’ll be very happy with the seafood selection, however most of the places are south of the city (and rebuttels start….now). My personal favorite is Fish Tales in Galveston.
Thank you Texans for 2011.
The 2012 season can't start soon enough.
Vietnamese, especially
It’s really a Houston specialty. I’m sure Jordann would be happy to take you around. Also, Yelp is your friend.

Have not partaken of this particular delicacy.
My gf has been unable to find time to drag me into one of these during my last few visits down there.
Just my $.02
Even duct tape can't fix stupid
Shop at Whole Foods Market or HEB, and Central Market in particular (owned by HEB) and you can always get wild caught Alaskan salmon
We eat salmon every week and also avoid the Atlantic farm raised. The other issue with farm raised is that the fish is not exercising while swimming and hunting, so it is mushy and fatty.
Unfortunately many restaurants offer the farm raised, as it is the source for roughly 90% of the U.S. salmon consumed. Reef restaurant in midtown Houston does not use farm raised, only wild caught, and they have a few different dishes available that will blow your mind.
Here is an aritcle or two on this topic:
Tests have shown that farmed salmon contains 16 times more cancer-linked PCBs than wild salmon.

Oh it's not the best by any means, just good and a cool location in the Hill Country
Mueller’s rocks some good eats. Franklin is good too!
Did something bad happen to the original Luling City Market?
City Market is still good, even great
They still have their original one in Luling and one in the Galleria area in Houston
Mueller’s and Franklin’s are turning out some amazing stuff lately
Salt Lick is great for a high volume place, and good country setting
Slow night here so I'm pulling in more research for you...
I’m not sure how much of the Texans you followed this season, but the “next man up” theme was nearly every game as we suffered losses to injured stars on the team. It was indeed a special season that has us all finally past the suicide watch of the last decade. The future is very bright, and if you want a glimpse of what to prepare for as a Texan fan…(turn the sound up)
This inspirational video will give you a view of the spirit of the coaches, players and fans of the Texans “next man up” attitude:
“Why not TJ?” Make no mistake, Schaub is our starting QB and team leader so there is not a QB controversy, but this was inspirational and really says a lot about the people we have here.

Welcome to Houston!
And welcome to battle red blog! Texas is an amazing place to live! I grew up on the sunny beaches of Florida, but I was born and currently reside in this great state, and like most, I love it here. The weather can be quite bipolar, but there are plenty of days each month that are absolutely beautiful! My perspective is that of a high school senior, so yes I am a little younger, but hopefully you read my advice and ignore age:).
I live in the heights, and it’s a great community. We are close to downtown(not too far from reliant, the toyota center, and minute maid park). Houston is full of nice little neighborhoods and communities. You are never too far from anything you could ask for. We have plenty of restauraunts featuring every type of cuisine you could ask for, and ranging from taco stands with killer tacos, to cupcake stands, to high class dining, to exotic, to mom and pop places. Houston’s zoning laws(or lack thereof), make for some really interesting sights. There are so many bars and hang out places to listen to good music and talk. We have a great museum district and zoo( although Our aquarium has NOTHING on the georgia Aquarium). We have the 2nd most number of fortune 500 companies, which makes our Economy pretty stable. The city is pretty large, and the number of roads here might be slightly intimidating. Also, We drive fast. We have plenty of malls and shopping all over town, with everything you could ask for. Many celebrities and wealthy people come to shop here. Our hospital system is one of the best in the nation. You will fit right in here, because we really love everyone and are so ethnically diverse, that’s there’s a little bit of everybody, and every mix inbetween.
I hope you love it here like most of us. Houston truely is one of the top underrated cities in America, and we welcome you to our city with wide open arms!
