Hypothetical Question for those lusting after a planetoid NT
Suppose JJ Watt had an identical twin and he was on the Texans roster. Would you play him at NT rather than Shaun Cody? How much of an improvement would you expect, if any? Would you still want to draft Poe, Ta'amu, or someone similar? Keep in mind that your planetoid man-love has maybe 20 lbs more wt than Cody at 310, and Cody has another 20 lbs on Watt. Poll after the jump. Please explain your vote.

Watt > Cody at any position

Drooling
And I openly advocate rotating Watt in at NT.
Wade’s system is 1-gap. This means, he wants his d-line to get upfield, upset, and penetrate. This does place a greater burden on LBs, naturally, but the goal is to upset timing and get to the QB. In Wade’s system, a plantoid NT is not a must. I wouldn’t mind if he’s a combination of both!
I’m not fond of an NT being a turnstile, either.

I like the available options at the DE spot more than NT
I think I am in the minority on this, but players like Fletcher Cox, Kendall Reyes, and Derek Wolfe seem like a better fit to me than Poe and Ta’amu. You have the flexibility to try them at DT, or use them for needed back up at DE, or both.
With ya
This is a different system. Adapt or die. That said, if you believe Poe or Ta’amu have the quickness, then you can go with them.

On obvious passing downs
could we see Cody coming out?
D-line of Smith, Watt and Mario?
LBs of Barwin, Cushing, and Reed?
DBs in nickel?

Read what you just said
And see how awesome that would be.

Totally agree, BFD
It’s just too simple that it HAS to work! I’d honestly love to see Watt rotate at NT; he’s disruptive on the outside, just think of the possibilities inside!
My thoughts are like Brian Cushing on the field: Everywhere.
i would rather have kareem jackson at nose tackle than cody.
at least when he fell he could trip somebody properly.

JJ Watt does have a Twin
His name IS Mario Williams
Next
True arrogance has been displayed here- WestministerRavensfan or something
Hi My name is Jack, why don't you help me off?
yeah, if you bring back Mario
you could certainly move him back to DE with Smith, leave Barwin and Reed at OLB, and move Watt inside to DT
I always wanted to see Mario at NT
Sure Watt could virtually be the same player

Hi My name is Jack, why don't you help me off?
I don't think it would matter a whole lot how you lined them up
just pick the best matchups and let em go. It would make for an awesome front 7 with Meco and Cush
Way too thin at OLB then.
Also Bruce Smith said playing DE in the 3-4, therefore being an easy double team and chop target, cost him 100 career sacks. Source
If we resign Mario to a big contract, I hope he stays at WOLB. I really think it would prolong his career (the torn pec was a fluke).
Here's the Bruce Smith quote.
Had you been a 4-3 end your whole career, how many more sacks might you have had?
BS: I’ve been told by other offensive linemen and coaches that had to scheme against me, ‘Bruce, you probably would have ended up with 300 sacks as opposed to 200 because of those double teams you had to face, occasional triple teams and the abuse and wear and tear on your body.’ I’ve had nine to 11 surgeries as a result of the chop blocks and things of that nature.
…
Isn't chop blocking a penalty now?
"All our lives we're taught to get in line. The ones who conform never discover." - Undrafted Free Agent and NFL Rushing Leader Arian Foster
The NFL’s rule against illegal chop blocks is often misunderstood, even by NFL linemen. Cut blocks are legal. It’s even legal for an offensive lineman on a running play to engage a defensive lineman and then have a second offensive lineman come in and hit the defensive lineman low. It only becomes illegal if the two offensive players engaged in the high-low blocks weren’t lined up next to each other on the offensive line. So it’s legal with a center and a guard, but illegal with a center and a tackle.

Give me Josh Chapman & Derek Wolfe instead
There’s more versatility with what you can do those two. You can go with a starting line of Watt, Chapman, & Smith with Wolfe, Cody, Mitchell, & Jamison as the backups. You could go heavy with Chapman, Cody, & Mitchell. You could go with a 3 DE front with Watt, Wolfe, & Smith. You could go with the vanilla line of Watt, Cody, & Wolfe, or the chocolate front of with Smith, Chapman, & Jamison/Mitchell. Tons of options here so you can rotate out & keep them fresh.

Yeah, but I'm sure anyone would have that problem playing on a torn ACL & meniscus
The fact that he played through it shows a ton of upside

However, Wolfe does not have that problem
At 6’6" & 295 lbs, he can switch between the NT & DE spots pretty seamlessly

I'm not buying the idea of a roadblock NT in Wade's system.
Wade is not a classic 3-4 guru. He wants penetrating pressure guys who can get up field, not power pigs.

I believe Fletcher Cox is a shorter Watt clone, and would be a perfect NT for this scheme.
Derek Wolfe is a 3rd-round guy I’d like to add for depth behind Smith and Watt.
Welcome to Houston, J.J. Watt, Brooks Reed, Brandon Harris, Rashad Carmichael, Shiloh Keo, T.J. Yates, Derek Newton, and Cheta Ozougwu!
Cox is gonna get picked by a 4-3 team
He’s a late 1st to early 2nd prospect
