If Not David Carr, Then Who, Back In 2002?

I asked this last night on Twitter as part of our #TTTQ, but I wanted to post the query here for those of you who don't utilize that forum (which you totally should, if for no other reason than to interact with all your favorite least hated BRB personalities):

#TTTQ: Back in '02, were you in favor of #Texans taking David Carr with the first overall pick? Why or why not?

Star-divide

Here's a link to the results of the 2002 NFL Draft if you need to jog your memory. Note that the question asks who you wanted back in 2002. Thus, you don't have the benefit of hindsight. Sure, Ed Reed would have been an infinitely better choice in retrospect, but no one was talking about Reed as the first overall pick back then. So be honest: Who did you want the Texans to take with that first overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft?

Bonus points if someone can outdo BFD's reply to my tweet last night:
Saying @CharleyCasserly is a draft expert is like saying Edward Smith is a shipping expert: just ignore the catastrophes.

Maybe not

Would Garrard have gotten us more wins? He wasn’t that good, I doubt it. We went 4-12 in ’02…even at 5-11 or 6-10 (tied with the Jets) we would probably have gotten Dre. Remember, Charles Rogers was the one everyone was raving about. Peppers would have been great, but no sure if he gets us more wins that 1st year.

Eh

I don’t think drafting Carr was a terrible decision at the time. If you don’t have a franchise QB, and there is someone on the board you think is one, you almost have to pull the trigger. Lots of people were high on Carr at the time — believe Kiper had him as the top player on his board and what not — and while I personally felt uneasy about him, it made sense in a vacuum.

The real problem was not getting a QB in the expansion draft (my fave: Charlie Batch) that could sit around and absorb some of those first 150 hits. Maybe that extra time makes Carr a better player and maybe it doesn’t, but throwing him to the wolves behind the 2002 line was an unmitigated disaster.

by riversmccown on Feb 22, 2012 10:45 AM CST up reply actions

Another monumental mistake

We basically put all our offensive line eggs in Tony Boselli’s basket, a 30 year old tackle who had missed 13 games of the previous season with major shoulder surgery.

No, that was never going to work out, and Casserly bet everything on him. I can’t prove this isn’t revisionist history, but like MDC said below, if you know me for more than 6 minutes, you know I’m an ageist when it comes to players and their development curve.

To be fair

the Boselli pick was made to appease the Jags so that we could also get Gary Walker (iirc . . . or was it Seth Payne?). Should we have drafted more o-line help? Certainly, but I don’t hate the Boselli pick as much as I probably could.

Playing said rookie QB from day one on an expansion team was more the moronic decision than taking one first overall.

It’s completely personal preference. I prefer building teams from the lines out, and there was no reason to believe our OL would be remotely average post expansion. Our defensive line looked even worse. I would’ve been pleased with getting a classic game manager QB with some scrambling skills.

Absolutely agree on building teams from the lines out

Peppers should have been a no brainer. OK, Carr was a no-brainer too, but of a different sort. Actually Garrard would have been a decent choice later on, he is like a cross between QB and RB so could have taken the hits.

I read an article yesterday

Where they tried to get Batch or another QB who’s name escapes me. But neither of them would sign, as they were aware that the Texans would be drafting Carr.

Drafting Carr wasn’t a terrible thing, but there needed to be a QB vet, not matter how bad they sucked, on the team to take the hits early in the season.

In hindsight

I’ve always questioned the issue that Carr was damaged by the hits he took early in his career. Yes, he took a beating, but after having watched him for so many years, I feel like he was pretty weak minded and would have been a bust anyway. I mean, he’s had years to overcome that and has never proven himself to be anything other than a mediocre backup.

Again, I was a Carr guy back in the day, but in hindsight, I don’t think that he would have been a good quarterback under different conditions.

I've had this argument with friends for about 6-8 years now

Some of them think Carr is better than Schaub (I kid you not) and would have been better had he not been sacked so much early in his career. That opinion in mind-boggling to me. Carr was a joke, I think a good chunk of his sacks were him tucking the ball and going down before the hits came. Like BFD says, he had a lack of work effort and made some boneheaded decisions. There are so many good QB’s in NFL history that took a pounding early and still ended up adjusting and succeeding (Troy Aikman comes to mind).

I'm going to annyingly direct you back to the lack of a Vet QB on the team.

Just ask Barian FosTate about the influence of Derrick Ward has had over the past two years. He hasn’t been an amazing TD scoring machine, but he is a veteran presence who has helped guide and mentor our two young talented players.

Can anyone tell me who the back-up QB’s were in 2002?

If you take Peppers, which would have been the other option, you get a Vet QB and pick up another QB in the later rounds. David Garrard or Josh McCown.

So he was a six veteran. He should have been able to mentor Carr somewhat.

I guess to see how much of the suck was Carr’s fault, you also need to look at coaching and what the O-line looked at.

I know if Carr was a great QB, he would have stepped up at some point in his career to be a starter again.

We've mentioned several issues here

A couple of us from different sources heard that Carr’s work ethic was extremely poor and he wasn’t all that interested in learning the playbook. I was also told the offensive linemen hated playing for him, and Carr’s father was a huge distraction.

Honestly, I haven’t heard anything good about Carr from his off-field work ethic.

Correct

Due to the early success of Carolina and Jacksonville, the league tweaked the expansion and amateur draft rules before Cleveland re-entered the league. I believe they tweaked them slightly again before Houston came back, but I could be wrong about that.

I am sure, however, that the Panthers and Jaguars enjoyed advantages (more picks in the amateur draft, if I recall correctly) that were removed by the time the Browns re-appeared/Texans appeared on the scene.

The Panthers made the playoffs in their second year (’96), but this was because of their 6th ranked defense by FO (and big free agent signings in Eric Davis and, especially, Kevin Greene). Also, they had an average offense line that season, which helped Anthony Johnson (RB) to a very good season.

Jax was more helped by their offense, but it was third year man Mark Brunell.

we woulda been screwed at qb no matter what

The next 3 qbs after Carr were joey harrington Patrick ramsey and David garrard. would any of those guys been better?

by BricAM on Feb 22, 2012 10:43 AM CST via mobile reply actions

I would argue Garrard could've been better...

Let’s say, for example, the Texans took McKinnie in round 1. In round 2, instead of drafting Jabar Gaffney, they could’ve gone Clinton Portis and Chester Pitts. Later on, in that same draft, they could’ve added OG Jonathan Goodwin, FB Lamar Gordon, RB Chester Taylor and TE Jeb Putzier.

Add to the mix C Steve McKinney and you have the makings of a run-heavy offense….with Putzier as a safety valve and Corey Bradford as his deep threat. A better line and run game would allow Garrard to just be a manager….which he showed he could be in Jacksonville.

What Casserly could've gotten in the 02 Draft (if he were perfect)

1st Round – OT Bryant McKinnie
2nd Round – RB Clinton Portis and OG Chester Pitts
3rd Round – FB Lamar Gordon and SS Chris Hope
4th Round – QB David Garrard and OG Jonathan Goodwin
5th Round – LB Scott Fujita and DE Aaron Kampman
6th Round – LB Bart Scott, RB Chester Taylor and TE Jeb Putzier
7th Round – C Eric Heitmann and LB James Harrison

Carr had a high grade

in large part because it was a shitty year for QBs in the draft. There was nothing about him in college that should have screamed “Peyton Manning” or “Andrew Luck” to anyone. If Fresno doesn’t make a mid-season run up to #8 in the BCS, he’s not a first-overall pick. Hell, Jim (or John) Harbaugh labeled Carr a SIXTH-ROUND pick prior to the draft.

Thats fair

That was a pretty shitty QB class, and I forgot that Fresno went up to 8th in the BCS. That was a rought year CFB wise for me.

He was graded higher then harrington thought I think, so I dont fault them for taking the highest rated player at the most important position.

but hindsight, with the team being new, they should have signed a vet and drafted lineman.

Its all worth it for where we are at now.

Turns out Dom Capers never wanted to draft David Carr. His recommendation going into the ’02 Draft was to pick either Julius Peppers or Albert Haynesworth. Disagreeing with him; Bob McNair and Charley Casserley decided that a high-profile QB would bring more media exposure to the team.

What about free agents?

Anyone remember who was on the market for 2002? Whether through the expansion draft or just UFA. Obviously there weren’t many good choices for QB in 2002. I remember being shocked that Carr was going to be drafted but I also remember there being a lack of options.

Also, the Texans picked 2 QBs in the draft the following year. Ragone and Hensen. Anyone remember if there were any reservations about Carr from the organization after his first year? Maybe the staff attempted to bring in someone that could push Carr during training camps…they just failed at the attempt(s).

It was just odd. I liked Morency too

There was a lot of talk about how Morency Would be a big factor in the running game then after 2 games in 06 we trade him for Gado who we promptly allowed to more or less ride the bench the rest of the year.

by maroonedTexan on Feb 22, 2012 3:52 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

For a normal team I would be OK with it

But an expansion team devoid of talent, eh. Not the worst thing you could do by any means but you just need depth at so many spots.

To be fair I was wrong and thought the we drafted him in the 4th or 5th off the top of my head, not 6th which is more in the “we don’t mind taking a risk here” range.

The trade didn’t really net us that much value if you go by the standard “trading a pick for next year bumps the round up one” rule. So a 2003 6th is like a 2004 5th and 2005 4th (we got a 3rd). Not particularly savvy but not as bad as I thought when I originally posted either

by Jason Brown on Feb 22, 2012 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

I agree it wasn't a steal of a trade

But there was potential, had Henson been more interested in football it could have become something better. At least we were able to take a 3rd from Dallas for almost nothing. I think that’s what makes me like the trade

Ecstatic that Texans fandom no longer means that April is the highlight of my season...

Good to know

That alcohol and bleach haven’t killed off all my brain cells. I can still remember the early 2000’s!

Matt Schoob, Mary O' Williams, Adrian Foster, Jacoby Ford, Kevin Walters, and Daniel Owens are my favorite Texans!

If you're looking for the best way to start, following Carolina's lead by trading down would have been the best option

Carolina’s initial season, they traded with Cincy and got the 5th pick of the first round and the 4th pick of the second round. I think there were teams that maybe would have traded up for Peppers. I could see possibly Kansas City parting with their second rd pick for the right to draft Peppers. That would have left us with 4 of the top 50 picks. Even if you assume that we select Pitts and Gabney with the other 2nd rd picks, that would have left us with the fifth pick of the first and the 43rd pick of the draft. I would have taken Mckinney with the fifth pick and possibly LeCharles Bently with the 43rd. Building on both sides of the line would have been the right thing to do. That’s what we’ve done since Kubiak has taken over, and that is what has made us into one of the top teams in the AFC. Imagine this Oline for the first season…

LT- Bryant McKinney
LG- Chester Pitts
C- Lecharles Bentley
RG- Steve Mckinney
RT- Ryan Young

would have been a very respectable o-line. If you’re team sucks, build up your lines.

Dwight Freeney or Donte Stallwaorth

Although Jeremy Shockey turned out to be a good one… If I took a tight end (but that’s Kubes moniker-noot mine) We had that superstar billy miller remember? I would have grabbed one via free agency probably Jeff Garcia, or Randall Cunningham… We did well with Tony Banks and ran him off.

Doin stuff so nasty that you have to do it twice to confirm the level of nasty!!

You gotta read the premise of the discussion
Note that the question asks who you wanted back in 2002. Thus, you don’t have the benefit of hindsight. Sure, Ed Reed would have been an infinitely better choice in retrospect, but no one was talking about Reed as the first overall pick back then. So be honest: Who did you want the Texans to take with that first overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft?

So are we gonna go after the doosh Innegan, lol

A BE-SF homer’s assessment of his losing the F in his name:

AJ punched him because he was shutting him down the entire game, and I’d bet my bottom dollar nothing like that ever happens again. When Johnson started punching him, he was smiling and violently clapping his hands together in joy because it meant an automatic ejection for him. He said during a practice the next week that he would never make that mistake again … he wasn’t aware you get ejected for being punched, also. Which what confused me was why didn’t the Packer lineman get ejected and suspended for allowing Suh to stomp his arm this season?

Wow.

There’s an amazing amount of dumb in that comment, even for a BESF fan.
