7 Round Texans Mock

Here it goes.

Star-divide

Round 1. Alshon Jeffery WR- We need a #2 receiver, Jeffery is either the next Mike Williams or the next Calvin Johnson. He has the talent, but it's up to him whether or not he wants to be great.

Round 2. Alemeda Ta'amu NT- Was a beast at the senior bowl and is just what we need to make this line elite.

Round 3. Michael Brewser C- Hate to say it, but Chris Myers is gone.

Round 4. Ryan Broyles WR KR- Allows us to release Jacoby Jones, he is second round talent the fell due to an ACL injury. If he recovers he could be the next Wes Welker.

Round 5. Tank Carder ILB- No dept behind Cushing and Demeco.

Round 6. Russell Wilson QB- Only reason he is hear is because of his height or lack there of it. Yates is the back up and Leinart is cut due to his contract.

Round 7. Randy Bullock K- I hate Neil Rackers.

Any thoughts?

I like drafting interior line help

But I think sure Myers will be back. Kubes and Dennison know how important it is for our running game to keep the O-line intact. That said I’m not sold on Caldwell so I wouldn’t mind seeing us upgrade the interior line depth.

I’m not sure why you hate Rackers, he doesn’t have a cannon for a leg but he is a solid kicker. One of the better ones in the league in terms of accuracy.

You did a good job filling the positions of need, and I like seeing some names

I havent seen before. I am not thinking Jeffrey will still be around at 26 though, and I don’t think we will draft Ta’amu because he isnt quick enough for what Wade wants (but there are a lot of others who like him). Brewster sounds good in the 3rd. I don’t think I want to use a 4th on Broyles. He isnt big enough to be #1 or #2 on the squad and the ACL is a concern too. I rather take a project in round 6 or 7, or even an UDFA. I dont know anything about Tanner Brock, but we need depth at ILB. Russell Wilson is a new name for me, but he sounds really good from the descriptions of him I have found. He sounds like a late round Texans pick to me. I dont like using picks on kickers. There are normally good choices in the UDFA pool. Pick a LB there..at least they can play on special teams, or take your fast WR/KR

by BleachBum on Feb 4, 2012 6:40 PM CST reply actions

you say no depth behind meco and cush

hmmm dobbins, sharpton, mister alexander. Now dont get me wrong tank will become a fan favorite if he does come. I have to say this is not a bad draft, i dont think we will do kicker, might be able to look at him as a UDFA.

You have a point, but if Sharpton is coming back from an injury. And I’m not sure how well Alexander or Dobbins would do being put in the starting lineup if there where injuries to the ILBs.

2012 WRs

1- AJ
2- Walter

I don’t think we’re changing that starting lineup.

As for 3-5, we have Jean, Maehl, and whoever we draft.

I don’t think we’re starting a rookie, even a first rounder. I’ve heard it was one of the hardest positions to learn in year one. And we want to win now.

So I think we’re going defense in round 1, or OL if we lose Myers.

I like your pick of Russel Wilson, but after last season, I’m sick of hearing about new Texan QB possibilities. I’m ready for some stability.

TJ must throw 30 times for us to win.

Um sorry but I don't see them drafting another QB.

It would be beyond stupid to have a QB with less than 10 games of experience as your primary backup and a rookie QB as the only back ups behind Schaub who does have a history of injuries. If they cut Leinart they’ll replace him with a another Vet for league minimum. Maybe they bring back Delhomme or Garcia.

I highly doubt the Texans will cut Jacoby. I also doubt they will draft 2 WR’s. They’ll draft one (barring a surprise FA WR pick up) IMO and let the 5th spot be decided outside of the draft. They don’t use the WR’s much anyways to warrant spending two separate draft picks on that position in the same year.

ILB. Tim Dobbins and Sharpton are both solid depth behind DeMeco and Cushing (Sharpton especially). The depth issues at LB are in the outside positions.

Prediction: 11-5 AFC South champions.

by Ethan Matz on Feb 4, 2012 8:33 PM CST reply actions

No, no, no, no, no..........

Hell no to Alshon Jefferey, & I seriously doubt Ta’amu falls that far into the draft. Here’s how I think it will go for the Texans

1st – WR Mohammed Sanu – No brainer of a pick here with much less risk
2nd – WR Rueben Randle – Walter will be a cap casualty, Jacoby will be gone. Why not double dip at WR? This would be the draft to do it in
3rd – DT Derek Wolfe – High motor DT that can play the nose & 5 technique, gets upfield quickly, plus adding to the whitest front 7 in the NFL
4th – OG Rokevious Watkins – Interior O-Line needs some depth
5th – TE Ladarius Green – Injury concerns could cause his draft stock to drop, especially coming off a shoulder injury. However TE may need to be addressed with the pending departure of Joel Dreesen (Don’t be surprised if he ends up in Oakland), and this 6’6" target will be too good to pass up
6th – QB Kellen Moore – Cheap, late round project QB for Kubiak to work his magic on again
7th – Random Colorado State OT – Because you know Kubiak will go to that well again

I think if we draft Ladarius green, he could be moved to a WR.

He does not have the body to block, looking at tape of him he looks really bad blocking. when they spilt him out he looked more comfortable. Got to see ho he does at combine when it comes to speed and all.

Nah, he'd be a mismatch at TE

As far as speed is concerned, he’s projected to run in the 4.65 range, not exactly ideal for a WR

Yup. The position is critically thin with no one coming along, unless they believe in Maehl and Jean,

who seem like long shots, at best.

That’s a hard position to come into the NFL and play at even for top tier talent.

this a great draft for WRs

it might not be ideal to cut both JJ and Walter, but drafting two WRs could set us up in the future

Here's my gripe with every mock I've seen:

You’ve basically declared our first three picks to be starters. Every one I’ve seen has been like this. Yet, last year, with gaping holes as a result of a horrendous defense and a scheme switch, we only pulled one day-one starter from the draft. That was drafting 11th, and we had a pretty good draft by all accounts.

This year we’re drafting much later. And while we like to complain about WR and NT, “average” is the worst you could say about Kevin Walter and Shaun Cody. You’re highly unlikely to find a player who will be an upgrade at one of those positions as a rookie (especially at WR, which is a rather difficult position to learn in a new offense).

What I’m getting at is that you’re better off genuinely taking the BPA than drafting for need at a position where you already have a capable NFL starter. It’s hard to find precedent because we have rarely had solid starters, but guys like Barwin, Casey, and Brooks Reed are all pretty good examples of BPA-types who were drafted without a position available for them. All were contributors this year due to injuries and such.

I get that it’s more fun to address greater needs in mock drafts, but my guess is that three of our first four picks are going to be at positions where we already have quality starters. They seemed to have found a distribution of talent that worked last year (up until the QB injury). My guess is that they’ll try to keep those key positions stacked with impact players and place a low priority on NT and WR.

by Nashmeister on Feb 5, 2012 1:39 AM CST reply actions

There is a need at WR right now. It will only get worse if it is not addressed.

If Andre goes down again, we would be looking at the same weak productivity at WR if the position isn’t upgraded.

As you said, it takes time to develop a WR. That’s a reason to get started now.

Sanu @ 26?

I’m glad you guys aren’t running the texans draft. He is a mid 2nd AT BEST.

He won’t run well in the 3 cone or 40, and won’t be able to separate like a first round WR should.

And taking a guy like Broyles in the 4th, who isn’t the CAREER NCAA REC LEADER by accident, who ALSO returns punts. That’s a no brainer. Sure he has to recover, but it’s not like it will threaten his career. He was never a 4.3 guy anyway.

I think some of you need to stop watching ESPN and highlight videos and using that to judge players. Not a good way to assess talent

CAREER NCAA REC LEADER

Ha yeah when OU throws the ball like 50+ times a game I’d expect somebody to be raking up their catch count.

If we are talking about a WR to develop to eventually take Andre’s place Broyles isn’t that guy (5-10 188? he’s smaller than Maehl.) Plus who knows what he’ll be like coming off that ACL. If he was there in the 6th maybe I’d throw a pick at him and see if you luck out and get more than just another return Ace (in other words the only thing he’d be really good at) that the NFL is full of.

Either way not a Broyles fan or a fan of any of these other slot guys people seem so high on (like Kendall Wright) when the Texans throw the ball less than 30 times a game and don’t really utilize those smaller WR’s much.

And yes that is my opinion not influenced by ESPN or being an Oklahoma fan.

I actually love the Alshon pick

I keep hearing about how he has work ethic problems but I saw him put up almost 200 yards on one of the top rated corners coming into the draft in the first half of SC/Nebraska. He had to deal with a new QB and an injured running back last season which helps explain the dip in production. If he’s there at 26 I would love to pick him up.

TE situation..

i know me as well as some others would like to be able to draft the next gronk or jimmy graham to pair up with daniels, not to mention the fact we will probably be losing dreessen. but i also would be happy moving casey back to TE. i dont think its necessary to trade up for fleener nor do i think we will. but having andre, sanu, daniels, fleener and foster sounds pretty deadly. and if we did get him we would still be able to hit casey out of the backfield as a FB or even use him in 3 TE sets. sounds like teams will be picking their poison if you ask me..

by TexansAddict on Feb 7, 2012 4:13 AM CST up reply actions

Trading up

I would like to see the Texans trade up in the 2nd round even if it means trading a 3rd rounder. The team is stacked with talent and needs top level talent rather than depth. I would like to see a OLB or WR taken in the fist round followed by a TE at the top of the 2nd.

by GCWTexans on Feb 12, 2012 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

Regarding TE situation

What happens if Dressen signs elsewhere? Owen Daniels is 29 and has ACL on each knee. Would we look at going after a TE in the first round with Fleener, Allen or Charles?
If Dressen doesn’t resign, I could see TE in the first followed with a WR in the 2nd. I still believe Mario Williams will be offered a huge payday with Tennessee or Buffalo, and that OLB position will become a priority too.

1st round If Upshaw, Ingram, Perry or Mercilus are still on the board then Houston will have to pull the trigger.

If not, then look at Houston picking Fleener, Allen, Sanu or Wright. There is a lot of talent available to pick up at the WR position in the 2nd round.
