GM pop quiz
Let's pretend we're Rick Smith. We know we have three major areas of need: Nose Tackle, Wide Receiver, and interior O-line depth. We are targeting a 1st/2nd round NT's such as Dontari Poe, Devin Still, Alameda Ta'amu or Michael Brockers. We are also targeting 1st/2nd round receivers in Michael Floyd, Alshon Jeffrey, Mohamed Sanu, and Dwight Jones. Interior o-line depth is the third ranking position of need as we are assuming Myers is resigned, putting us squarely in line to target someone like David Molk. Here are your questions.
1. If Poe, Still, or Brockers are on the board would you take any receiver above them in the 1st?? Who would you take before them and why?
2. If all of your target DT's or WR's are getting taken early, even 2nd round prospects, would you consider trading up in the first to get one?
3. If Floyd, Sanu, Jeffrey, or Jones are on the board would you take any DT over them in the 1st? Who would you take before them and why?
4. Given a choice between any of the receivers or defensive linemen listed, who would you be most comfortable with as the first pick?
5. If your choices of DT and WR were both available in the late 1st round, would you consider trading away picks 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 to a high 2nd round team to reach for the second player on your list? If so, would you use the 3rd round pick left over on Molk, or another player? Perhaps even a different center?
6. If all of your choices for DT or WR are taken before pick 26, how do you adjust draft strategy? Do you reach for your second player or trade down? Do you keep your picks as is and take the BPA?
7. If Jason Allen and Matter Leinart leave, how does that affect your draft strategy? Do you forgo trading up to get your top 2 players in an effort to reinforce depth? Do you trade up anyway and address depth over summer?
8. If Mario Williams leaves but Chris Myers stays, do you upgrade outside linebacker as a priority above nose tackle, receiver, or o-line?
9. If Chris Myers leaves but Mario Williams stays, do you upgrade offensive line as a priority above nose tackle or receiver?
10. If both Chris Myers and Mario Williams leave, what do you address in the draft first? OLB, Oline, WR, or NT?
11. If Myers, Williams, Allen, and Leinart all leave, what do you do? Who would you target in free agency to fill these spots?
12. If all of the aforementioned free agents leave for other teams the night before the draft, how will your board be laid out?
Here are my answers. How do they compare to you?
1. If Poe, Still, or Brockers are on the board would you take any receiver above them in the 1st?? Who would you take before them and why?
- It depends on how many of them are left. If two or three 1st/2nd round caliber DT's are still there I would roll the dice, take a receiver, and hope one of them is left in round 2. At this point I would take Sanu if he is available. He just makes too much sense for Houston.
2. If all of your target DT's or WR's are getting taken early, even 2nd round prospects, would you consider trading up in the first to get one?
- Probably not. If there is huge run at one position it probably means there is a wealth at another. I would get a player that normally would have gone much higher, so I consider that a value.
3. If Floyd, Sanu, Jeffrey, or Jones are on the board would you take any DT over them in the 1st? Who would you take before them and why?
- I would take a DT over Floyd, Jeffrey, or Jones, but not Sanu. If Mohamed is on the board no matter what I'm taking him.
4. Given a choice between any of the receivers or defensive linemen listed, who would you be most comfortable with as the first pick?
- Mohamed Sanu. He's almost too perfect to be true.
- I would consider it very seriously. It would be completely dependent on free agency. If we get Mario and Myers back I would definitely do it. Sanu in the 1st. NT in the 2nd. Molk in the 3rd. That's a successful draft in my eyes.
6. If all of your choices for DT or WR are taken before pick 26, how do you adjust draft strategy? Do you reach for your second player or trade down? Do you keep your picks as is and take the BPA?
- In the unlikely scenario that Poe, Ta'amu, Brockers, Still, Floyd, Jeffrey, Sanu, and Jones are all gone by pick 26, I would probably trade our 1st rounder away to someone for some 2nd and 3rd round picks. With those we would get quality, if not arguably elite, depth at WR with Nick Toon. We could also probably get Josh Chapman in the 2nd. Molk would still be there in the 3rd. Broyles would be a good target with the extra 3rd as well. How's that for value?
7. If Jason Allen and Matter Leinart leave, how does that affect your draft strategy? Do you forgo trading up to get your top 2 players in an effort to reinforce depth? Do you trade up anyway and address depth over summer?
- I still would trade up, even if it means we can't draft a 3rd QB. We can always find another cheap back up in free agency.
8. If Mario Williams leaves but Chris Myers stays, do you upgrade outside linebacker as a priority above nose tackle, receiver, or o-line?
- I immediately put outside linebacker rotation ahead of everything but wide receiver. Sanu in the 1st. Vinny Curry in the 2nd. David Molk in the 3rd. Delvin Johnson (NT) in the 4th.
9. If Chris Myers leaves but Mario Williams stays, do you upgrade offensive line as a priority above nose tackle or receiver?
- Nope, because Molk is a gifted ZB center that would do well in our system, and we could get him round 3 fairly easily. I would consider reaching for him just to be safe though.
10. If both Chris Myers and Mario Williams leave, what do you address in the draft first? OLB, Oline, WR, or NT?
- In order: O line, OLB, WR, NT.
11. If Myers, Williams, Allen, and Leinart all leave, what do you do? Who would you target in free agency to fill these spots?
- If Myers and Williams leave I draft to replace them in rounds 1-2 and pick up NT, CB, and QB in mid to late rounds. To address WR we would throw all sorts of money at Marques Colston.
12. If all of the aforementioned free agents leave for other teams the night before the draft, how will your board be laid out?
-Well, if they leave the night before the draft that means we won't have an opportunity to get FA's before draft day, which means we have no idea what we can and can't get from other teams. In that case, I'm taking Sanu in the 1st, an OLB in the 2nd. A Center in the 3rd, and a NT in the 4th all while hoping Brandon Harris is a good prospect.

1. If Poe, Still, or Brockers are on the board would you take any receiver above them in the 1st?? Who would you take before them and why?
I would definitely take any of those guys over a receiver in the first round. I think this draft happens to be particularly deep in the Wide Receiver position, and besides, skill positions tend to be a bit of a crapshoot anyway.
2. If all of your target DT’s or WR’s are getting taken early, even 2nd round prospects, would you consider trading up in the first to get one?
If my second round prospects are being taken in the first, I do not trade up. That would mean trading up for a second-round talent in the first, and that’s not okay. I definitely give a hard look at my scouts, though. Because if this is happening, they dun goofed.
3. If Floyd, Sanu, Jeffrey, or Jones are on the board would you take any DT over them in the 1st? Who would you take before them and why?
See question number 1.
4. Given a choice between any of the receivers or defensive linemen listed, who would you be most comfortable with as the first pick?
Probably Poe. We need a NT, and he’s a NT. I really don’t follow the draft that closely, though, so feel free to disagree on this one.
No.
6. If all of your choices for DT or WR are taken before pick 26, how do you adjust draft strategy? Do you reach for your second player or trade down? Do you keep your picks as is and take the BPA?
I go BPA. Since the guys that I want have been taken, that means that there will be some pretty good players left in the BPA category.
7. If Jason Allen and Matter Leinart leave, how does that affect your draft strategy? Do you forgo trading up to get your top 2 players in an effort to reinforce depth? Do you trade up anyway and address depth over summer?
It doesn’t. Brandon Harris does get some playing time next year, though.
8. If Mario Williams leaves but Chris Myers stays, do you upgrade outside linebacker as a priority above nose tackle, receiver, or o-line?
No. We have Brooks Reed. No matter what happens, drafting at OLB is drafting for depth, and you don’t do that when there are positions of need.
9. If Chris Myers leaves but Mario Williams stays, do you upgrade offensive line as a priority above nose tackle or receiver?
No. I’m going to believe the rumors about the current FO thinking that Myers is a product of our system, and probably just draft a replacement in the middle rounds.
10. If both Chris Myers and Mario Williams leave, what do you address in the draft first? OLB, Oline, WR, or NT?
Nose Tackle. That’s our hardest position of need to fill, and therefore, we should fill it first.
11. If Myers, Williams, Allen, and Leinart all leave, what do you do? Who would you target in free agency to fill these spots?
MATT LEINART LEAVING?! OH GOD, I DEFINITELY TRADE UP FOR ANDREW LUCK. WITHOUT LEINART, WE’RE DONE FOR.
/sarcasm.
12. If all of the aforementioned free agents leave for other teams the night before the draft, how will your board be laid out?
Literally none of those would affect my draft board. NT would still be top priority, followed by WR, OLB, interior O-line, and finally, Kicker. After that, it’s BPA.
Houston Texans: 1 Playoff Win.
Vince Young, Dunta Robinson, and Jason Babin: 0 Combined Playoff Wins.
1. If Poe, Still, or Brockers are on the board would you take any receiver above them in the 1st?? Who would you take before them and why?
Only if Mohammed Sanu is off the board
2. If all of your target DT’s or WR’s are getting taken early, even 2nd round prospects, would you consider trading up in the first to get one?
No, this draft is deep enough at both positions
3. If Floyd, Sanu, Jeffrey, or Jones are on the board would you take any DT over them in the 1st? Who would you take before them and why?
Only Sanu. I’d take a DT over the rest of them
4. Given a choice between any of the receivers or defensive linemen listed, who would you be most comfortable with as the first pick?
Sanu as the 1st option, Poe as the 2nd option
No
6. If all of your choices for DT or WR are taken before pick 26, how do you adjust draft strategy? Do you reach for your second player or trade down? Do you keep your picks as is and take the BPA?
Trade back & watch how things play out
7. If Jason Allen and Matt Leinart leave, how does that affect your draft strategy? Do you forgo trading up to get your top 2 players in an effort to reinforce depth? Do you trade up anyway and address depth over summer?
No, it doesn’t change the draft strategy
8. If Mario Williams leaves but Chris Myers stays, do you upgrade outside linebacker as a priority above nose tackle, receiver, or o-line?
No, we look for depth. 3-4 pass rushing OLBs are a dime a dozen in the late rounds, or even with undrafted free agents, plus Reed & Barwin have shown they can do the job
9. If Chris Myers leaves but Mario Williams stays, do you upgrade offensive line as a priority above nose tackle or receiver?
No, it stays the same. Myers was a late round pick, so he can be replaced. O-Line should be addressed by the 4th round regardless of him staying or going
10. If both Chris Myers and Mario Williams leave, what do you address in the draft first? OLB, Oline, WR, or NT?
WR & NT first. ZBS O-Linemen are usually undervalued, & backup 3-4 OLBs should be addressed either late in the draft or after the draft
11. If Myers, Williams, Allen, and Leinart all leave, what do you do? Who would you target in free agency to fill these spots?
I’d target Peyton Manning’s surgeon to fix Kareem Jackson’s neck, & move Caldwell to Center
12. If all of the aforementioned free agents leave for other teams the night before the draft, how will your board be laid out?
1st – WR
2nd – WR (I’m cutting Jacoby & Walter, so I’m replacing both of them)
3rd – NT
4th – OG
5th – TE (I think Knapp is taking Dressen to Oakland with him)
6th – QB (Cheap late round QB)
7th – OT

3-4 pass rushing OLBs are a dime a dozen in the late rounds, or even with undrafted free agents
Name one (besides James Harrison, who was cut and re-signed more times than David Anderson before he caught on as a starter). If there’s any position you have to draft early, it’s OLB.
Rob Ninkovich, a 5th round pick by the Saints, starting for the New England Patriots in today's Super Bowl
He’s been cut by the Saints, once by the Dolphins, placed on their practice squad, claimed by the Saints, then cut again before landing with the Patriots.
Cameron Wake went undrafted in 2005, was signed & cut before the start of the 2005 season, played for the BC Lions in the CFL for a few years before signing with the Dolphins where he’s been a starter.
Jarrett Johnson, starting OLB for the Baltimore Ravens was a 4th round pick
Shaun Phillips, starting OLB for the Chargers was a 4th round pick
Those are just starters. If we’re looking for depth at OLB, we can easily find those in the mid to later rounds

Ninkovich is a bad pass rusher.
And Johnson is isn’t particularly productive, either. I’ll give you Wake, I suppose, but I wouldn’t expect to get break-out years out of too many 30 year old CFL players. Of the top ten sack leaders among 3-4 OLBs, six were first-round picks and one was a second-rounder. The numbers are similar for hits/hurries. There are very few positions in the league that have that type of draft position-to-production correlation.
However, the problem is you're thinking about this the wrong way in the event Mario leaves
You’re thinking that we need to replace Mario with someone just as good, or at least close. I’m thinking that we need depth behind Barwin & Reed. You don’t spend high draft picks on depth

1. If Poe, Still, or Brockers are on the board would you take any receiver above them in the 1st?? Who would you take before them and why? Kendall Wright, (Blackmon will be gone, of course) because I think he will be a special player.
2. If all of your target DT’s or WR’s are getting taken early, even 2nd round prospects, would you consider trading up in the first to get one? If all my WRs are gone, I’m taking the best OL or OLB available.
3. If Floyd, Sanu, Jeffrey, or Jones are on the board would you take any DT over them in the 1st? No.
4. Given a choice between any of the receivers or defensive linemen listed, who would you be most comfortable with as the first pick? Sanu.
5. If your choices of DT and WR were both available in the late 1st round, would you consider trading away picks 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 to a high 2nd round team to reach for the second player on your list? Yes. If so, would you use the 3rd round pick left over on Molk, or another player? Yes.
6. If all of your choices for DT or WR are taken before pick 26, how do you adjust draft strategy? Do you reach for your second player or trade down? Do you keep your picks as is and take the BPA? If all my WRs are gone, I draft more WRs later to try to find a jewel. I use my #1 on an OL or OLB if there’s value there. If not, I trade back.
7. If Jason Allen and Matter Leinart leave, how does that affect your draft strategy? Not at all.
8. If Mario Williams leaves but Chris Myers stays, do you upgrade outside linebacker as a priority above nose tackle, receiver, or o-line? Yes, I’ll take OLB #1 if the value is there.
9. If Chris Myers leaves but Mario Williams stays, do you upgrade offensive line as a priority above nose tackle or receiver? Yes, if I can’t get a quality FA.
10. If both Chris Myers and Mario Williams leave, what do you address in the draft first? OLB, Oline, WR, or NT? OLine, but again, first I’ll try to sign a free agent.
11. If Myers, Williams, Allen, and Leinart all leave, what do you do? Who would you target in free agency to fill these spots? I’d be looking at OL and OLB FAs.
12. If all of the aforementioned free agents leave for other teams the night before the draft, how will your board be laid out? #1 OLB, #2 OL, #3 WR, #4 OL #5 WR
