24 hours ago, you'd have been correct to guess one of these guys would not be a Texan in 2012. And 100% of you would have been wrong when you guessed which guy that would be.
In just about six hours, the 2012 Free Agent Season will begin. As we saw with the cuts of Eric Winston (unexpected) and Matt Leinart (expected), as well as the forthcoming-if-the-universe-makes-sense cut of Jacoby Jones (please?), the next couple days figure to be a wild ride for Texans fans.
To help you get through the next six hours, here are some random thoughts and observations, most of which actually have something to do with the Texans:
1. If it's true that the Texans were projected to be over the cap (prior to the cuts and restructurings), then Spotrac is dead to me. I used their salaries for the salary cap post and got nowhere near being over the cap.
2. I'm still not convinced that the projections that had the Texans over the cap are exactly right either. Honestly, trying to guess the cap situation of any NFL --- especially one that plays everything as close to the vest as the Texans do --- is a fool's errand.
3. Any salary cap discussion that includes things like "when Mario Williams' contract comes off the books, the Texans will have X more dollars for 2012" is inherently flawed and should be ignored.
4. Off the top of your head, can you think of any Disney movie in which the main character has two biological parents alive at both the beginning and end of the film? I can't. This is weird to me, mainly because the lack of a parent is rarely germane to the story. (For instance, it helped explain Marlin's neuroses in Finding Nemo, but it served no real purpose in Beauty and the Beast, unless we're ascribing some of Belle's Stockholm Syndrome-esque behaviors to the lack of a motherly figure in her life.)
Anyhoo, this is your open thread for the 9am-to-3pm window. Comment to your heart's desire.
