Why the Texans may not draft a WR before round 5

No, I am not trolling. I think the Texans may feel they have more pressing needs. We have several young WR's on the team we might develop, and the draft is deep with WR's. But mostly this comes from simply looking at the depth chart. And to be clear, we very well may pick one earlier, but I think it will be a value pick rather than a needs pick. Details after the jump.

Well we have 5 picks in the first 4 rounds. If not a WR there, then what would it be? First off, I believe we need DL/OLB depth. Listed at DE we have JJ, Antonio, and Jamison..period. At OLB we have Reed, Barwin, Braman, and Nading. Are you comfortable with that depth given our history of injuries? I'm not. DE's in recent drafts go pretty quick. This draft has a number of interesting options with players who can play multiple positions. I think we at least draft a DE/NT and probably a DE/OLB guy in the first 4 rounds. Since I am making a case why we might not draft WR in the first 5 picks, let's say this covers 2 of the 5 picks.

Listed at TE we have OD, and Graham. Graham barely hit the field last year. Are you comfortable starting the season with these two? Considering OD's injury history? Not me. BTW, Thor is the only FB on the roster. I think we pick up a late round, UDFA, or FA fullback, but still I think Thor is emergency only at TE. I think we for sure draft a TE in the first 4 rounds. I think it is fairly likely we draft a second TE in rounds 6 or 7

At OT we have only 3 players listed, Duane Brown, Rashad Butler, and Derek Newton. We might move Caldwell there, but he is currently listed at OG, and at G, besides Caldwell, we have Wade Smith, Shelley Smith, and Andrew Gardner. Cody Wallace backs up Myers at C. I think we need at least 2, maybe 3 players at OL. The ZBS benefit is we can get value in the later rounds, primarily at G and C, but I think we dont have an advantage at OT because speed and quickness is being sought by many teams at that position to counter the OLB/speed rushers from the outside. How late are the Texans willing to wait to fill all the OL needs?

We might be able to convert a late round TE to OT ala Duane Brown, but we are already up to 6-7 players in my mind, and we cant push them all into rounds 5-8. And I havent even talked about WR. I think it becomes a numbers game at this point, and WR might get pushed to the back burner. We have some young players there already, and WR is a position were historically gems were found in late rounds and UDFA. So this is why I am thinking we might not go WR until late. Flame away.
