35 years of football frustration and counting. Being a life long Houston sports fan; the years of frustration just seem to continue to mount. I remember "Luv Ya Blue" and I remember singing the Houston Oiler fight song. Some of you remember it started with, "LOOK OUT FOOTBALL HERE WE COME, HOUSTON OILERS #1!!" But we never were. We've never been #1. (Quick pun, we've been #2 many years).
I've waited all these years, and I will continue to wait. But for how long. In the late 70's and 80's we couldn't get past the Steelers
even with Earl Campbell. They just had too many weapons and a Hall of Fame QB. In the 80's and 90's we couldn't get passed "whoever" was on the other sideline during the playoffs. Denver, Seattle and KC all provided home loses for us and then the Buffalo debacle that basically ushered the Oilers out of town. Now we have a whole new set of challenges.
We just can't win big games. So, the question is, when? When will it be our turn? When will we find THAT player who get's us over the top in big games. Where is our Tom Brady
, Peyton Manning
or Aaron Rodgers
?? We have solid players but it never seems to be enough. Other teams have holes and can over come them. But, we just never seem to be able to over come ours. Other teams have a player or a couple of players who can carry their team and almost will their teams to victory when things are tough. Who is that for Houston? The answer is we don't have a player like that. It is quite possible that we never will. I have resigned myself to this as fact. We are destined to be that team who everyone thinks is good enough but can never live up to their full potential. So we look forward to 2013 and another year of "maybe's" and "could be's" and high expectations. But will we ever see that potential truly realized? After 35 years I am starting to doubt that it will ever happen.
