Updating the news that broker earlier this afternoon, Sam Montgomery, Willie Jefferson, and Cierre Wood (or people close to them) have started to explain their side of the incident that allegedly motivated the Texans to cut ties with them. To Twitter we go...
Sam Montgomery - "I made a childish mistake." Added no illegal substances were involved in him breaking #Texans team rules.— James Palmer (@JPalmerCSN) October 21, 2013
Sam Montgomery says he walked into a hotel room where Jefferson & Wood were smoking a cigar. Went to team meetings and was called by Kubiak— James Palmer (@JPalmerCSN) October 21, 2013
A source close to Willie Jefferson told me: "There were no substances involved in the violation" #Texans— Will Grubb (@WillGrubbRadio) October 21, 2013
Source also said he was speaking only about Willie's violation. He doesn't have details on the other two. #Texans— Will Grubb (@WillGrubbRadio) October 21, 2013
Source says Jefferson was smoking a cigar in his hotel room. They were called downstairs and accused of using a substance.— Will Grubb (@WillGrubbRadio) October 21, 2013
According to source, the room was never searched and no substance was ever found. #Texans— Will Grubb (@WillGrubbRadio) October 21, 2013
Source say Jefferson met with team officials who told him 'they knew what he had been doing' #Texans— Will Grubb (@WillGrubbRadio) October 21, 2013
From Cierre Wood's Twitter account:
At the end of the day its buisness. Pure buisness.— ☆FLY.41.SOC ☆[SBSB] (@stadium20status) October 21, 2013
My initial reaction is that it is highly unlikely the Texans cut three players for smoking a cigar. It's even more unlikely that one of those players was cut for merely being in a room where two teammates were smoking a cigar.
Assuming, of course, that the cigar was filled with just tobacco.
If you believe the Texans cut three young players, one of whom was a third round pick six months ago and another who quite possibly was looking at getting snaps in an injury-depleted backfield, for smoking tobacco, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.
