It has been really fun watching Case bring a spark to this team in the past 5 games, but with zero wins and the team on a nine game losing streak, it is hard to see him as the future starting quarterback of the Texans. He has 5 more games to audition for the job next year but if I were the Texans I would seriously start to consider drafting a quarterback in the first round of next year’s draft.
There are so many holes on this team it will be hard pressed to fill them all in one year. It has even more holes to fill knowing that the contracts of Ben Tate, Antonio Smith, Wade Smith, Ryan Harris, Greg Jones, and Joe Mays are up as well. This team is going to have a top 3 pick that is for certain, so they will be able to pick the cream of the crop that is for sure. Players like; Jadaveon Clowney, Anthony Barr, Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota, and Jake Matthews are some of the players that are expected to be taken in the top ten. You definitely cannot argue against taking Clowney, Barr, or Matthews. They are all super talented players that you can expect to show up at the next level. Of the three I would lean towards Barr or Matthews. The offensive line play this year has just been downright atrocious. I am almost to the point that I think the line needs to be completely rebuilt. We are already losing Wade Smith and Ryan Harris to free agency, Newton shouldn’t be sniffing the field at all, and Myers could be a cap casualty. I know that Quessenberry is going to get his opportunity to start next year and Ben Jones might get one too. I am definitely not sold on Brennan Williams either, especially after the injury that he has suffered. That is why Matthews is a guy that is at the top of my list. Barr is another guy at the top of my list because one thing that I have noticed about the Texan’s defense is that they are constantly having trouble getting consistent pressure on the quarterback. The only guys who even get a sniff at a sack or pressure consistently are JJ Watt and Antonio Smith, and Smith might not even be here next year. I expect the Texans to move Reed to inside linebacker to fill a hole there so that leaves a spot open for OLB. Trevardo Williams might be the answer but if he isn’t than I am taking Barr with the first round pick. Barr’s numbers this year are pretty astounding (8 sacks and 57 total tackles through 11 games) seeing as how this is only his second year on defense. Clowney is very talented but he reminds me too much of Mario Williams and I am not sure that I would take him. Then there are the quarterbacks; guys like Johnny Manziel, Marcus Mariota, Teddy Bridgewater, Brett Hundley (maybe), and even Derek Carr are all options. I am not sold on Bridgewater just yet and I don’t think I will be sold on him unless he plays a team like Alabama or a really good defense. Seeing as how I don’t think that will happen, I doubt I will be by the end of the year. At this point I can’t see Hundley entering the draft. If he does though I would only take him if the Texans traded back in the first round. The only way I would even consider drafting Manziel at this point is if the Texans traded back and he was the best player available. Mariota would be an interesting pick but just like Bridgewater I can’t say that I am completely sold on him yet. The final option that the Texans could potentially take is Derek Carr, who has surprisingly been rising up on people’s draft boards. I personally have seen mock drafts with him being picked at the 5th spot in the draft and the 8th pick as well.
I know a lot of people are going to be against drafting Carr just because of his last name but if you actually look at his highlight reel, he is a viable option. There are six games left in the season and there are many things left that have to be played out. At this point though we are playing for draft position (Texans have a -0.1% chance to make the playoffs). That is a fact. Who do you think the Texans should take?
