There seem to be a lot of givens about the 2014 season for the Texans. New coaches and personnel will be hired meaning new schemes, play calling, and philosophies. A top 5 draft pick is almost certainly in their future. And it seems to be a given that with a back like Arian around, Ben Tate will be playing somewhere else next season.
But should he?
With no research whatsoever done on my part, I'm starting to think that letting Tate walk is a mistake. Tate should be a cheaper resign than Arian's $40 million +. But the last few seasons I can't tell much of a difference in production between him and Foster. The only added value Foster has had is his pass catching ability from a QB that checked down to him in the flat all the time. With a new QB and a new coach, I would think that tendency goes away.
It seems that putting Arian on the trading block this season, someone will bite on giving up a first round + a late round for him. I think I would take that as opposed to waiting until 2015 for a third round compensatory pick, at best, from Tate. This seems to get more value out of both of them and I'm perfectly happy keeping the guy that has played over a month with broken ribs instead of the guy that hasn't played a month this season.
It makes sense to me with a "mini rebuilding" phase this offseason. Let's control the value we get out of players we have under contract now. Again, I have no real evidence to support that this is the way to go, just a feeling. So what do you think? And be gentle ripping me apart. This is my first time.
