Despite interest from NFL teams, Coach David Shaw plans to stay at Stanford, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Shaw already is on the Houston Texans radar, and is expected to be on the radar of just about any NFL team making a head-coaching change. Looks like the Texans are going to have to look elsewhere for their next head coach. A lot of the options that the Texans can take I am not too excited about. Options like Jack Del Rio, Mike Shanahan, Greg Roman, Wade Phillips, Lovie Smith, and Ken Whisenhunt don’t excite me at all. I don’t see Bill O’Brien leaving Penn State but I hope I am completely wrong on that one. That is the guy that I want to coach this team now that Shaw is not an option.

There are many other options but they don’t fit Bob McNair’s criteria for what he wants in a coach. Guys like Darrell Bevell, Ray Horton, and Todd Bowles should all get interviews but I don’t think McNair goes with those guys because they don’t have the head coaching experience that he is looking for. Out of the three I would be most interested in Bevel.

I am really starting to think that Lovie Smith or Ken Whisenhunt are the two guys that might end up getting the job. I am not sure who I would rather have at this point in time. I think both of them are pretty good coaches. Lovie took a Bears team with Rex Grossman at QB all the way to the Super Bowl and Whisenhunt helped the Cardinals get to the Super Bowl as well. Right now I am leaning towards Whisenhunt because he is supposed to be an offensive genius and what he has done with Phillip Rivers this year has impressed me. Our offense needs to get fixed if this team wants to go anywhere in the future, this league has become all about the offense. If you don’t have a good offense and a great QB you are going to have a hard time winning games. All of the teams that are playoff caliber teams right now have pretty good QBs and great head coaches or great QBs and pretty good head coaches. There are exceptions to the rule but 9 times out of ten you won’t see those teams make it far in the playoffs. Who do you think the Texans should go after now that Shaw is out?
