Eric Winston released by Chiefs! You know the next question. But what's the answer?

From the Twitterverse...

Chiefs released OT Eric Winston tonight.

7:23pm

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Our beloved caveman can come home. But....will he? Can we afford him? Would he even want to come back?

Would he even want to come back?

Yes! He was successful here and he did seem to enjoy it here. This is what he said upon being released by the Texans:

"I have nothing but positive memories and great relationships that I have built over the years. While my future seems uncertain, I am confident I will land on my feet. Let me say thank you to Mr. McNair and the whole Texan organization. They have had big role in the player and person I have become. And last but not least to my fans and teammates. You guys are the absolute best! I will miss all of you more than you know."

Can we afford him?

He was due $5.5 million the season we released him, however, that was going into Year 4 of his backloaded five year contract. After a single season with the Chiefs, I suspect he wouldn't mind signing a smaller (and again backloaded) contract. This means that our cap hit in the first couple of years could be in the $3m-3.5m per year range. We could do this with our $5.8m in cap space plus a few minor contract restructurings.

But...will he?

No. Not because of HIS lack of interest, but because of ours. Some of you will really hate hearing this (and additional others may disagree), but I really do believe that The Smithiak see Newton as our future RT. Sure, they'll bring in competition in the form of a low- to mid-level FA or a mid- to late-round rookie (who will then be the swing tackle we still need), but I don't think The Smithiak want a rotating RT position which is what they might have again with Winston back.

Ya know, I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see Winston back. I just don't think it will happen.
