First off, I come in peace! We just had our 2nd community mock draft over at The Daily Norsemen, and I had the honor of piloting the Texans through the draft. This mock included the option to trade, and it happened live via the comments section, with teams getting 7 minutes to make a pick and/or trade. We only ran the first two rounds, but we might run a 3rd and 4th round tomorrow. In any case, here is who I picked for you:
1st Round, pick #27: WR Keenan Allen, Cal
I actually tried to trade up in the 1st round. I had a deal on the hook with the New York Giants where I would trade your 3rd, 6th and 7th rounders to move up to #19. I had my sights on ILB Arthur Brown. But my very own Vikings made a sweeter deal and pulled the trigger instead! We were both trying to hop over the Bears. Alec Olgetree and Kevin Minter were both gone by pick #19. So, I stayed put and watched Keenan Allen fall into my lap. Tavon Austin was taken #2 overall by the Jaguars (crazy I know!) and Patterson went #14 to the Rams. I felt pretty good about this pick. The Bears ended up picking OG Jonathan Cooper with the next pick.
2nd Round, pick #43 (traded 3rd rounder, #89 to move up): ILB Manti Te'o
First off, I know, I know...the fake girlfriend thing. But once again, I was looking at the Bears ahead of me, still needing a LB. At this point, Minter, Olgetree and Brown were all gone, and the Bears were sure to take Te'o if I didn't trade up. According to the trade value chart, giving up #57 and #89 to move up to #43 was about as even as it gets. And Te'o was arguably one of the best options still on the board at the time. If I didn't make the trade, then that would leave the Texans with a guy like Bostic or Alonso in the late 2nd or maybe 3rd round. Those aren't terrible options, but certainly not as good as the Heisman runner-up, and I personally think the hoax thing and NCAA Championship game is being blown out of proportion. The guy flat-out produced at the college level, at a big-time school, for many years. Getting him here in the 2nd round is great value IMO. That, and it really pissed off the guy running our division rival Bears, so there's that. :D
So, what do you think? Let the flaming begin! LOL
