Last night, the punter for the Houston Texans averaged 47.3 yards over 4 punts, 2 punts were inside the 20, had 0 touchbacks, and the longest punt was 59 yards (and the only reason why the average wasn't higher is because one of the punts was a "pooch punt" to try to get inside the 20, which was successfull). By looking at these stats, you would think Shane Lechler was punting last night right? Wrong. It was Rookie Andrew Shapiro. I was wrong about him. In an earlier fanpost, I said he was just a roster filler until the opening week. He has proven that he is a good punter, perhaps maybe even good enough to steal Lechler's job? While I think Lechler is still the favorite to win the job (especially since we haven't even seen him punt yet), Shaprio still has a chance to win it. And even if he doesn't, the Texans would be foolish to not put him on the practice squad and perhaps try again next year. He has proven he can punt, but we will have to wait and see until Lechler gets his "say so".
