NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport told Dan Hellie on "NFL Total Access" on Monday that there is still "mutual interest" in a Mallett trade.
"From what I understand, there is still a chance (for a trade)," Rapoport said on NFL Network, adding that May 27 is the key date because that's when the Patriots take the field for organized team activities."
If trade talks are still existent later this month, it would not make sense for the Patriots to risk an injury to Mallett by allowing him to join his teammates on the practice field. New England drafted Jimmy Garoppolo on the second day, which seems to signal an end to the Mallett era in New England. Who knows how far along the trade talks have gotten but we do know that Mallett is on his way out the door of New England. While he is out the door in New England he has a much better chance at being the interim starter in Houston and a trade might be the best thing for all parties involved.
