Could Oakland Raiders trade Matt McGloin to Houston?

Matt McGloin has continued to play exceptional football for the Oakland Raiders this preseason. Has this increased his trade value? It’s fair to say the Oakland starting quarterback job will be decided within the next week and it will either be veteran Matt Schaub or Derek Carr who get the job. Whoever loses is certain to get the backup job, which means Matt McGloin is stuck in the third string spot despite having a tremendous preseason. Through two games he has over 200 yards passing and has scored two touchdowns, one running and one throwing. He continues to grow from what was a rather solid debut as a rookie in 2013. Since it is unlikely he will challenge for the starting job with the Raiders, is the 24-year old becoming a trade asset?

One of the more popular strategies teams like to employ these days is to groom young quarterbacks like horses in a stable and then auction them off to other teams in exchange for draft picks. It’s just a question of finding the right buyer. Oakland could unload McGloin by placing a call to the Houston Texans. The Texans continue to have problems at the quarterback position. Anointed starter Ryan Fitzpatrick has looked uneven in training camp and the preseason while rookie Tom Savage is much too raw to even consider starting. Case Keenum has looked the same as he was last season when he took over for Schaub. That is to say he has not shown much improvement in reading a defense. That has left the door open for trade possibilities. McGloin would make great sense for them not just because he’s playing well but because Texans head coach Bill O’Brien developed him when they were together at Penn State, so they have previous experience working with each other. O’Brien may find a reunion much to his liking, as long as the price is right.
