The 49ers will pay for their insolence. Here's a rundown on what happened during the Texans' final preseason game for the 2014 season.
Offense:
It sure would have been nice to see either Case Keenum or Tom Savage set themselves apart on the Texans' quarterback depth chart, but each had a pretty poor showing. Each threw an interception, struggled with accuracy and both were consistently hassled in the backfield.
Former Aggies Travis Labhart and EZ Nwachukwu were featured on punt and kick returns, respectively. Neither got much of a chance catching passes due to the aforementioned struggles at quarterback.
I didn't notice Mike Thomas stand out. The patchwork offensive line didn't do much to give its quarterbacks and running backs room to work with.
C.J. Fiedorowicz appeared to struggle early on in run blocking.
Defense:
Whitney Mercilus was trotted out there for nearly the whole game. He did make some waves early on, doing his best Jadeveon Clowney impression with back-to-back plays in the backfield.
Rookie Andre Hal showed some quick reflexes picking off an errant throw on a curl route and returned it for a touchdown. He would later get burned deep down the sideline.
Fellow rookie Jeoffrey Pagan made some plays, too, particularly at nose tackle.
Special Teams:
Shiloh Keo was playing like a man possessed on kick return coverage, notching several tackles. No doubt he's feeling some heat with the team signing safeties Chris Clemons and Kendrick Lewis. He made a strong case to remain on the roster. Keo also looked quick and decisive when he was on defense.
Randy Bullock set a personal record with a 52-yard field goal. I'll still be holding my breath every time he trots out on the field.
Those are my quick observations. Did I miss anybody? Feel free to talk about what you think prudent. Stay tuned tomorrow, though, because roster cuts are coming, according to Rick Smith.
