Kubes Speaks: The Monday Presser

After watching the game tape, Coach Kubiak addressed the media today.  Some of the highlights:

-Jason Simmons had successful surgery today, but is still out for the year.

-Not as good on special teams as they showed in the preseason, but Matt Turk was the special teams MVP on Sunday.

-As expected, Von Hutchins will be starting at FS on Sunday.

-Michael Boulware will move up the depth chart; he's putting in extra time to learn the defense and looked good on special teams.

-Anthony Weaver played exactly as many plays as the staff hoped.

-The defense raised their intensity and "pinned their ears back" after the first drive of the game.

-The OL had a couple of "communications problems" and can certainly play better.

-The dust-up between Kubes and Chester Pitts was no big deal.

-The Schaub is a leader of men.  He may also have solved world hunger.

-Super Mario "was even better than you thought" on film.  He was a factor "every play."

-Charley Casserly has requested that he be named an honorary ball boy for Sunday's tilt.  No confirmation to the rumors that he'll be sporting a homemade shirt that reads "Carr Rules!" and "Schaub Drools!" in glitter.

RE: Super Mario
Nice.  Just Nice.

Please God, let Samson come into the game this Sunday.  I promise to save puppies from those horrible Buckeyes for the rest of my days. (you're welcome, Matt)

Satan, I realize I have already sold my soul numerous times.  So, I'm pretty sure I can't offer much in return for putting Zoolander on the field this Sunday.  However, I am willing to sell someone else's soul.  You name it, it's yours.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

CC Brown
Von starts at FS. Boulware moves "up" the depth chart. What does this mean for Brown? Does he start at SS and Boulware is first off the bench at SS?

I hate to say it, but through the preseason, every time Brown got burned I could only think Matt Stevens with a bit more speed.

Re: Brown
I may have mistyped, Knave.  Although C.C. Brown is a SS masquerading as a FS, I have to believe he'll stay at FS and Hutchins will start at SS.

Sweet Jebus--we're in big trouble if our current starters at either safety spot are evoking memories of Matt Stevens.  I just threw up in my mouth.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Color me baffled
CC Brown is a natural SS, Hutchins has played FS and CB, but we're gonna keep Brown at FS and play Hutchins at SS. Does this make sense and I'm just not seeing it? Do I just not understand how we use our safeties? I would expect that our SS's area of responsibility is close to the box, while our FS is a bit further back for pass coverage, but I could be completely missing an ingeniously creative scheme. Or Cover Two. I will confess that I'm ignorant of Cover One and Cover Three schemes.

Update
I just consulted wikipedia. I am now an expert in Cover One and Cover Three. Tomorrow I'm gonna submit 32 applications for a job as secondary coach.

Why wait?
Start submitting those apps now.  We could use an inside man from BRB.

Found this in the chronic
From http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/5124485.html :

"If Hutchins starts, C.C. Brown will move to his natural position of strong safety, allowing Hutchins to play free safety. If Boulware proves he is capable of starting this week, he would start at strong safety and Brown would remain at free safety."

Somehow, that reassures me. About something.

Re: Hutchins and Brown
I agree; it makes far more sense for Hutchins, a former CB, to play FS.  I think it's a bit easier to hide a SS who is poor in coverage, particularly against the run.

Here's a query for you--as it's probably just a matter of time before Boulware is getting significant time and/or starting, what happens then?  From what I've read, Boulware is better suited to SS.  Assuming the coaches like him enough to get him on the field a great deal, who's the odd man out?  Brown, because of his inferior coverage skills?  Or Hutchins?

Depends
Who SHOULD be?  Brown.  Who WILL be?  Probably Hutchins.

Damn it.

Is it too early to hook Jacoby Jones up with Darcy Maeda?

RE: Damn it
It sucks that you are probably right about this.

I blame Bethel Johnson.

Reassurance in part
Hopefully Von can make enough of a statement so if (when!  dear god when!) Boulware takes over, CC can move to his natural position on special teams covering punts (which Von actually does better as well).
WWJD? At the altar of Jacoby... I'm a believer.
