Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Ramblings of a Central American

So my friends we had our playoff game. We have an AFC North defense and a finesse ((West Coast) Denver) offense. We have tasted blood in the water..... I realize that the salary cap and the draft being exempt from it are the game now..... We know from a recent poll that a majority of NCAA players wanted the Texans to draft them,... I beleive that the fact that we now have a recognzed program... aka talent , coaching and hype.. that players will sacrifice $$$ for the program...

Will Mario do what others have done and agree on a sum for the team.. Will Arian do the same??

Dynasties and Perennials require a communal approach in regards to salaries to attract the most talent in exchange for glory.

Can our guys do that.... or is success going to breed egocentricity....

Texans' 2012 Salary Cap Situation

This guy did a great job laying out the Texans' cap situation heading into this offseason.

Here are the highlights:

  • We paid Dan Orlovsky a ton of cap money this season to beat us, and we'll do it again (cap wise, not beat us [hopefully]) to the tune of $2.2M in dead money.
  • Speaking of dead money, Tim will be glad to hear Amobi will cost us $3.6M in cap space, and he still isn't old enough to drink.
  • He doesn't think the cap, which apparently will be released soon since the season ended yesterday, will increase.
  • We get money to sign our rookies outside of the cap, but our pool is based on where we draft, and may not be enough to cover signing all of them (he estimates $4.5M for the whole class).
  • That leaves us with a bottom line of $25.6M of cap space, without releasing anyone.

On to the Contest, the first caption contest was quite the heated affair. With three contestants in a clear run away with a down to the wire finish. Our inaugural Caption Winner FreedomRide with one Chalice, let the Games Begin

Early Offseason Headlines

The Giants have won the Super Bowl. Now that football is over it's a perfect time to make-up some Off-season Headlines. This is my first fan post let me know if you like it.

Colts Put Peyton Out to Pasture

Colts release Peyton Manning and draft Andrew Luck. We have seen a future HOF QB comeback from a major injury with little success. Remember Joe Montana you know that legendary QB that spent 13 years with the 49ers. Then in 1994 he retired from Kansas City Chiefs. I sense a simillar situation here as the Colts are clearly a rebuilding team.

Peyton's Persuer:

Peyton will play for The New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum is known for taking risks{Plaxico & Santonio Holmes} I just see him making this type of splash during free agency. The Jets would make a deal in a New York minute. I don't think the Jets have faith in Sanchezise anymore.

>Skip Bayless' Tebowner Rages On

Skip Bayless is an exper dork who has a creepy obession with Tim Tebow. This Tebowner of Skip's will continue to infect Skips body until Tebow gets 'r' done or until Tebow wins the Super Bowl. We shall see when Skip's Tebowner ends. I'm still not sure what is worse Tim Tebow winning a Super Bowl or Mini Tebow's?

GM pop quiz

Let's pretend we're Rick Smith. We know we have three major areas of need: Nose Tackle, Wide Receiver, and interior O-line depth. We are targeting a 1st/2nd round NT's such as Dontari Poe, Devin Still, Alameda Ta'amu or Michael Brockers. We are also targeting 1st/2nd round receivers in Michael Floyd, Alshon Jeffrey, Mohamed Sanu, and Dwight Jones. Interior o-line depth is the third ranking position of need as we are assuming Myers is resigned, putting us squarely in line to target someone like David Molk. Here are your questions.

1. If Poe, Still, or Brockers are on the board would you take any receiver above them in the 1st?? Who would you take before them and why?

2. If all of your target DT's or WR's are getting taken early, even 2nd round prospects, would you consider trading up in the first to get one?

3. If Floyd, Sanu, Jeffrey, or Jones are on the board would you take any DT over them in the 1st? Who would you take before them and why?

4. Given a choice between any of the receivers or defensive linemen listed, who would you be most comfortable with as the first pick?

5. If your choices of DT and WR were both available in the late 1st round, would you consider trading away picks 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 to a high 2nd round team to reach for the second player on your list? If so, would you use the 3rd round pick left over on Molk, or another player? Perhaps even a different center?

6. If all of your choices for DT or WR are taken before pick 26, how do you adjust draft strategy? Do you reach for your second player or trade down? Do you keep your picks as is and take the BPA?

7. If Jason Allen and Matter Leinart leave, how does that affect your draft strategy? Do you forgo trading up to get your top 2 players in an effort to reinforce depth? Do you trade up anyway and address depth over summer?

8. If Mario Williams leaves but Chris Myers stays, do you upgrade outside linebacker as a priority above nose tackle, receiver, or o-line?

9. If Chris Myers leaves but Mario Williams stays, do you upgrade offensive line as a priority above nose tackle or receiver?

10. If both Chris Myers and Mario Williams leave, what do you address in the draft first? OLB, Oline, WR, or NT?

11. If Myers, Williams, Allen, and Leinart all leave, what do you do? Who would you target in free agency to fill these spots?

12. If all of the aforementioned free agents leave for other teams the night before the draft, how will your board be laid out?

The Pain of Playing in the NFL - What Is It Worth?

Tony Dorsett looks at brain scans which show the damage due to repeated concussions

via l.yimg.com

As we enter the 2012 offseason, several of the Houston Texans players are facing negotiations for new contracts. As with every player in the NFL, they have a history of injuries of varying degree. To stay in the NFL, they face a future of more injuries. When they retire, the degradation to their bodies, brains and emotions remains and quite often worsens. Who can question why the players do this. Fame, taking care of their family, and personal satisfaction are high on the list of answers. What is it worth? How can the NFL take care of its players that have already gone through the system and retired? How can the NFL take care of its future retirees?

Some former players are trying to find answers in a lawsuit. Tony Dorsett is one of over 300 former NFL players who are plaintiffs in the lawsuit. What will the outcome be? Would a court victory provide enough relief to satisfy the former players in the lawsuit? Will the former players ever find relief for the toll to their bodies, brains and emotions? I read through that article and I saw that former NFL player Steve DeOssie, who I met when he was with the Boston College Eagles, has not joined the lawsuit because he has not decided if the concussions he incurred while an NFL player have impacted him. This may be the case for many players. But, for others, they are definitely impacted.

Sure, the rules today are changing in favor of greater protection for the player, but that does not mean they will never be affected. Play has changed. Fines have been levied. The game is safer than it was. But, there are no guarantees. Severe injuries in the NFL will never go away so long as they still allow tackling, blocking, and running. No matter what, there will always be risks associated with the game of football at every level, not just the pro level. Concussions and other severe injuries can take place on the Pop Warner, high school, and college level, too. Are the rules in place now sufficient for the current players purposes and is the NFL's responsibility covered. Should lawsuits by current and future players go away as a result of today's rules? What are the answers? I don't know.

Draft Ideas if Mario isn't Resigned

As much as I want to see Mario resigned this year, and as willing as I am to spend Bob McNair's money to do that, there is still a possibility that the Texans have another strategy in place. Under this scenario, I would hope they are saving that contract money in order to go after a good free agent or two, and those would be a proven WR and/or another proven DB. At that point, who I target in the draft might be a little different. Tell me what you think of the following guys after the jump:
