Texans To Sign Eugene Wilson?
After your Houston Texans parted with Brandon Frye yesterday, I wondered who would be claiming his roster spot. Seems like we now have an answer, as the Chronicle reports that the team is expected to sign Eugene Wilson today.
While his career stats don't scream "impact player" and I immediately fear that Wilson is simply Rosevelt Colvin, Jr. (witness his eerily similar release by his new employer), the fact remains that Wilson has the potential to alleviate some of the concerns at CB (and to a much lesser degree, safety). That alone makes me a fan of the move. What's more, we know that Smithiak has had some success adding free agent defensive backs at seemingly inopportune times. Doubtful that Eugene Wilson does much in Pittsburgh in a few days (or possibly even for the next few weeks), but I'm encouraged by his presence on the roster as an option at CB. Here's hoping he's more Will Demps than Michael Boulware.

Vaya Con Dios, Brandon Frye
According to the official site, your Houston Texans bid adieu to Brandon Frye this afternoon. Frankly, I was a bit surprised that Frye made the 53-man roster a couple of days ago; this move, to me, means that the staff feels pretty good that Ephraim Salaam is close to 100% and that Rashad Butler is a better prospect than Frye.
It also means that the team now has an open roster spot. Any guesses about who gets that coveted final place at the table before the Texans jet off to Pittsburgh? No real clue here, except that I'm pretty sure it won't be Tony Boselli.

Deep Thoughts About Madden '09
Some interesting things are intersecting in the Texans blogosphere...Matt over at DGDB&D has an interesting piece. It's specifically about an argument he's engaged in, but more generally, it's about how the Texans are viewed nationally.
At the same time, Sportsgamer.com just came out with the Madden 09 ratings shown in their graphic to the right. You can definitely get a sense how the guys at EA Sports feel about the Texans. I bring this up because the Texans are about to enter a watershed season.
Anyone that knows football knows the Texans took a giant leap forward last season. Lots of 2nd and 3rd string players, as well as new starters, established themselves. Guys like Kevin Walter and Fred Bennett put themselves on the map. All but the most hardened man-crushes have let go of the Mario-bashing and decided that Young and Bush are more hype than substance. So with all that, the Texans are poised to make their mark in the national spotlight.
If you read this blog, you're probably a Texans homer. You know that Mike Brisiel is going to steamroll Albert Haynesworth this year, and that Zac Diles is going to put Goldberg's spear on Maurice Jones-Drew. So obviously our view of Texans players is probably a little skewed.
That being said, it'll be up to you to set the world right and lead the Texans to conquer the national stage. Check out the ratings below and see what I mean.
