Poor John McClain

Welp, it looks like I tweaked poor widdle mcclain's ego with a comment today.  Have a look:

http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/2007/11/bush_fumbles_at_the_texans_1ya.html#comments

Oh yeah, insulting my name.  You know, that's the mark that you know football.  I mean, I don't trust any analyst until they can get a quality dig in like that.  Touche, mr. mcclain!

Here's my response, that will never be published:

"

When he played better, I praised him. Why, do you think anyone called bigfatdrunk would have any credibility?

Oh, ouch, what a zinger!  I'll never be able to leave my mommy's basement again.

Seriously, though, a back-handed compliment in your summary is not praise.  I'm not sure why both you and Justice continue to have this odd vendetta against Mario.  Even Andre Ware caught on quickly that Mario was having a dominant game.

However, because I don't write for a big newspaper (anymore, at least), and I have a silly name on the Internet, I don't have any credibility when talking about football at all.  Nope.

And y'all wonder why circulation numbers for newspapers are heading straight down?"

Makes me wonder if Tim's mom will let me move in...

{BFD, perhaps you didn't read or listen, but I've been praising the heck out of Mario since he started playing well. In my game blog that I do from start to finish, I write what I see. When I saw Mario in the first quarter, he was blocked one-on-one by Zach Strief, a backup tackle. And I wrote it. Sorry if you didn't like it. Then they stood him up and moved him to the other side and then back, and then he played well. Then I praised him. After the game, I praised him in the Chronicle, on Chron.com's audio and video and in my blog. And I praised him on 610 this morning If he continues to play well, I'll praise him. If he doesn't, I'll criticize him Now, what part of that do you not understand? Or, do you just read and hear what you want to read and hear and don't actually comprehend? As far circulation, has it occurred to you that circulation is down at just about every newspaper in the country because you can get it for free on our websites? Duh? Yes, I'm sure you're right; it's because of Justice and me. By your line of reasoning, if we write what you want to read -- praise Mario all the time, right? -- then our circulation will skyrocket? Geez, I didn't realize it was that simple. Thanks for clearing it up. -- JOHN}
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

My response (thanks Shake)
Well, I must say I am pleased you responded.
I've been praising the heck out of Mario since he started playing well.

Then please accept my apologies.  Between my jobs emptying septic tanks and waiting tables at that big truck stop on I10, I honestly don't get to read/view every little thing that is posted.  If you have been praising him, great.

Back to my original point, however, before Bush fumbled, Mario already had:

1-10-NO 31     (10:38) 25-R.Bush left guard to NO 31 for no gain (90-M.Williams).
and
2-1-HOU 39     (8:14) 25-R.Bush up the middle to HOU 37 for 2 yards (47-W.Demps, 90-M.Williams). (Source: NFL.com)

That's just statistically.  On the field, he was holding his containment area(s) well on the run, and though his pass rushing technique is certainly immature, he was extremely active.  And this is why I was...I dunno...shocked?  disappointed?...at your statement.  In reality, Bush wound up with 14 carries and 23 yards (tossing out the hold), and that's in large part because he got tired of Mario hitting him.

I gathered that the Mario pre-season theme was "He's good but he lacks intensity."  And when you add that to the response a friend of mine received from Mr. Justice of why the latter hates Mario ("He can't play." - full email on 10/29/07), I was definitely getting an echo chamber feel from the Chron writers.  When, I have to tell you, the common, uneducated fan like myself has been mighty impressed by the play of not only Mario this year, but also by the entire front seven (with the Jags game being a nauseating exception).

I don't want blind idolatry from my sportswriters, but I do except something bordering on objective fairness.  And this I am getting in far better quality (factual and entertainment) elsewhere.  I sincerely hope you can understand why.

Greatest day of my life
I have achieved "friend" status.  Which, I believe, raises my total number of friends to 4.

BFD
Why would a guy who dubs himself "The General" and sings (poorly I might add) "Big Bad Schaub" have any more credibility than our dearly beloved bigfatdrunk?
I know some people here like him, but seriously, he's the one Chron writer I dislike the most.  Tell him to stuff his mouth with another stack of pancakes at your truck stop diner and shut the hell up.  And by the way several women down here in El Salvador think you working in a truck stop is kinda sexy, pictures will follow...

Ranking my disdain
I wouldn't put McClain at the top of my shit list, but he's on there.
  1. Richard Justice
  2. Megan Manfull
  3. John McClain
I don't include Anna-Megan because, if she's a "writer," I'm a fucking astronaut.

by MDC on Nov 20, 2007 8:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow
You're a fucking astronaut!?  The women here will love that!!! And I know it's true cause it's something I can print for them...almost as good as the Chron.! Wow, and now Anna-Megan is a writer as well....this is the best day ever!

Hell yeah.
Just make sure to specify that I'm a "fucking astronaut" and not a regular astronaut.  There's a difference, you know.

Mine
I don't have nearly as much disdain for the afore mentioned 'writers' as I do for Jerome Solomon... That cock gobbler straight up called the Texans and their fans losers:
"(The Texan's) fans were rabid and loyal before the team even had a nickname.
But they're all losers -- maybe not the biggest, but losers just the same."

That is what I call unforgivable.  The rest of that garbage article can be found here.

Re: Solomon
I remember that.  Scott wrote a great post about it here.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Yeah...
I knew I wasn't the only one pissed off by his article.  Honest to Allah, I sent that guy a scathing email from my govt comp.  Fuckin' prick.

Solis
You're right, the fact that the "Houston" Chron would even print that makes me want to boycott them and get all my Texan info from here, dgdb&d and other sources..ok ok, even AOL fanhouse ;-)  and thanks to matt's links sportspyder.  Jesus that was insulting.

wow
this is all really sad, isn't it?  Between Solomon and justice and mcclain and the rest, not one of us here is overly impressed with the chron writers.  it's funny in a dead clown sort of way.

BOING!

(I'm really enjoying the self-denigrating part of the conversation.  I'm sure the irony is lost on him, especially since the last response (the one Shake posted) is so damn illiterate.)

Don't let us down
You've already elevated yourself to truck stop waiter, please don't make us think you you're more than that, that would be almost too much to absorb in one day.

Hold up
"As far circulation, has it occurred to you that circulation is down at just about every newspaper in the country because you can get it for free on our websites?"

OR...could it be because newspapers are an outdated source of information, since everything in them is at least 12 hours old by the time you read them?  Yet the old-school writers--especially the sports guys--refuse to change the style/approach to newspaper writing?  Could that be it?

No, it must be because I can read the same drivel online.

by MDC on Nov 20, 2007 8:50 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Also
It's like Steph and I discussed, as well (and as I explained it to BFF of Coons, Ryan).

Newspaper columnists simply don't get that they are no longer in charge.  The Internet is a two-way conversation, and they no longer hold the tablets from on high, dictating our beliefs to us.

Unfortunately, a certain demographic still buys into their out-dated mojo, but as more and more people get comfortable with the internet tubes, the newspaper will become increasingly irrelevant.  That pattern has been in place since I first hopped on the net in 1990.  There is literally no reason we can expect that to reverse.

But, as long as the dinosaurs are around, there will only be that one-way conversation.  I am pretty shocked mcclain has engaged me for this long, but I think the tone of hysteria in his writing is telling.  He really hasn't addressed my original question, which I went back and did.  He has made it a point to insult my name and my ability to discuss football.  His response in a word, is stereotypical.

Still, he hasn't given up yet.  Gotta give him props for that.
