Oh, You Think So, Doctor?

News flash...Ahman Green's season may be over:

With more injuries hitting the Texans, the team is no longer able to waste a roster spot each week on running back Ahman Green if he isn't going to play.

Green, who has a knee injury and was inactive for the sixth time Sunday, will practice this week. Coach Gary Kubiak said a decision will then be made regarding Green's status for the rest of the season.

At this point, I'd be totally SHOCKED if Ahman Green EVER played another snap for the Texans, much less took another snap this season.  I guess $6,500,000.00 just doesn't go as far it used to.  I feel bad for Ahman, as you know this wasn't what he pictured when he signed with the Texans.  But I feel worse for the fans, because we aren't making money for watching the games each week, unlike a certain RB.  And I feel worst for the fans who purchased a No. 30 jersey; it's looking like that investment will only be fruitful if you can find someone on eBay who likes buying hilarious or quirky football artifacts.

Fun With Numbers:  As of today, Ahman Green has earned $1,083,333.33 each time he's dressed for a regular season game as a Texan.  Now THAT'S an incentive laden contract, folks.

Update [2007-12-6 8:40:58 by Tim]:: MDC runs some more numbers here. Read 'em and weep.

Where do we go from here?
So basically, we've got three options:
  1. Draft a RB with our 1st or 3rd round draft pick - someone who can start immediately, like Adrian Peterson. (Steve Slaton, anyone?)
  2. Acquire an RB through free agency - because that's worked so well in the past (/sarcasm)
  3. Stay on the Dayne train.
I'm not read up enough on the college draft to know whether #1 is a viable option or not (plus, I think we need to draft a FS with choice #1).  And I'm not sure Ron Dayne can keep his white-hot 60 YPG pace for another year.  So I really don't know what to do, except that we've really got to establish a running game.

Re: Drafting a RB
I've made a conscious effort to refrain from draft talk thus far (which, at Week 14, is a new record for me), but I will say this:  Mocking The Draft, our network's newest addition, does an AMAZING job covering the prospects and who's available.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Homeritis
Checking out that site and seeing the list of NFL prospects coming out of college, and, further, seeing Rucker, TE, Mizzou at #11, it struck me how very rare it is to see a player from your college team and think how cool it would be to have him on your NFL team--when you're from Missouri.

Very true.
I mean, MU has put out so few that I can rattle the good ones off without thinking.  Kellen Winslow, Sr., Justin Smith...um...Justin Gage?  Brad Smith?

Wow.

FS/RB
As of the last time I really looked at it, there is NO ONE I would take in the Top 20 at FS.  There are a shitton I would take at RB.  Since we ain't getting D-Mac, my short list is Felix Jones and Kevin Smith.  That kid from Oregon is pretty solid, too.

I'm still not completely sold on the idea of a first round RB, especially in a draft this loaded with RBs.  At the same time, without a second round pick, we have to get an impact player with that first choice.  I sure don't want to reach for a defensive back in the first if there is no one worth taking (especially with some of the free agents that will be floating around.)

And I feel worst for the fans who purchased
a No. 30 jersey...

Item 298746 - opening bid $0.30

Now you can own a piece of Texan history and re-live all the hopes and aspirations Texan fans had for their team at the beginning of the 2007-2008 season. Hardly ever used, this size 52 Battle Red jersey is a must for any true Texan fan.

Shipping @ $4.99. To illustrate seller's frustration, I will wrap it in brick and throw it through your window if you live in northern New Jersey, free of charge.

That last line made me laugh out loud.  Well done.

5string
Slaton couldn't get it done in a big spot against Wannstedt. Thanks to the injuries of the past week, I'm beginning to think Mike Hart, who I have a big-man crush on (there, I said it), is a realistic option.

re: Mike Hart
Now you're just outright sucking up to MDC.

But Hart is definitely one of the top prospects after McFadden.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

I love Mikey
but I would rather have the two I listed above.  sub-5'10" RBs are a risky bunch.

With that money
We could have made 6,500,000 collect calls with AT&T.

Re: Hart
He's where I'd put our hopes.  After watching him the past few years three things come to mind:
  1. He NEVER fumbles.  Seriously, I think he's fumbled once his entire career.  Or some crazy number like that.
  2. He's extremely durable.  Plays banged up.  Basically the anti-DD
  3. He should be available around our picking spot.  Projections don't seem to have him going before 15 or so (mind-boggling, but whatever).
I know we have other holes... but RB has been a plague since day one.  Hart could be a very real answer.
Tell me again why I follow sports?

Personally...
If we address RB via the draft, I'd rather it not be a primary focus.  We've got to get some DB help at CB2, FS, or SS (somewhat dependent on what you think about Bennett's long-term position) and on the o-line (which goes back to why the Carr discussion is still relevant).

I mean, really, I'm still more concerned with talent collection than with filling specific needs.

Plus, at this point, we need more information on our plethora of injuries.  Damnz, it's been a harsh year.

by bigfatdrunk on Dec 5, 2007 2:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

though
I just saw BTBD's comments on a Burnt Orange thread, and there is a very nice group of junior RBs coming out this year.  Maybe we grab one.  Regardless, I don't think Dayne's the answer, and I don't think we'll fork over the dough for a Michael Turner the Burner, either.

by bigfatdrunk on Dec 5, 2007 2:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

hopefully
Hopefully some of them come out.  McFadden we know will be in the draft, but hopefully Jonathan Stewart, Felix Jones, Slaton, and Kevin Smith come out early.  That's in addition to the senior class of Tashard Choice, Ryan Torain, Allen Patrick, Hart, and Justin Forsett.  There will be running back talent available beyond the first couple rounds.

And it was jc25's post, I just added a comment below it.

Re: Needs
I remarked the other day that the Texans could take nothing but DBs and offensive linemen for the next two (2) drafts and I would be happy as a pig in excrement.

I'm still of the mind that RB help can be found late in the draft or via the undrafted free agent market.  I'd only take a RB in the first two rounds if he was a once-in-a-lifetime prospect (first round) or a how-is-that-guy-still-available buy (second round).

Well, since the Spades have been broken...
I'm saying the same thing this coming year regarding the Draft.  We need to trade back and accumulate more 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Round picks.  We need a pool of talent available at training camp...not just 4 or 5 new guys.
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Dec 5, 2007 3:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My choices
were assuming we didn't trade back.  If we do, and can drop to the 25 range, then some of the DB choices are promising.

On the other hand, if we shit the bed the rest of the way and have a high pick, Jake Long and Michael Oher and Sam Baker are extremely intriguing.

by MDC on Dec 5, 2007 7:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: shitting the bed
I cannot fucking believe with the way the season started we are talking about Jake Long, Darren McFadden and trading back to get more picks. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

To quote Tim: "Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...",

and DisplacedTexan: "Tell me again why I follow sports?",

and since I've already been accused of sucking up to you, Matt: "cockrag".

Draft Talk
Sigh..........I guess we should talk about the draft now.  My 5 win prediction is looking better by the week.  I'm in favor of trading down for more picks as long as we:
-O-line, O-line, O-line.  We must not Carr-ify the Schaub.
-RB.  Easy late round pick up this year
-FS.  Fred Bennett is the future opposite Dunta, I'm convinced of that.

Lastly, I might get pelted with bricks for this, but what do you guys think of trading some of our depth at WR?  I mean, we can only have so many on the field at one time, and I feel like there's some teams out there who we might be able to get some value out of for an A. Davis, or even..Jacoby? Love 'em both, but just a thought.

Texans 2007; re-living the nightmare.

by JMPeffer on Dec 5, 2007 11:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Davis
should definitely be considered trade bait.  As good as he's played, there's no reason to have 4 receivers in this offense.

Expectations
Dre D for a fourth rounder?
Shakin 'em off one win at a time... In Schaub we trust.

Dre D
Is an unrestricted free agent after this season, is he not?

by Nashmeister on Dec 6, 2007 11:22 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

frankly...
I don't think we could get shit for Dre D, even if we do control his rights.  If I remember correctly, he didn't even dress until after AJ got hurt.

Yeah
My bad.  I was thinking it was a two-year deal, but it was only one.

Sucks for us
We pretty much rejuvenated his career. I'd like to:

a) Still have him around, or:
b) Get something in return for him. And most importantly:
c) Not let him end up on Tennessee.

by Nashmeister on Dec 6, 2007 1:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Goddamnit.
I HATE Malcolm Jenkins, both because he's from tOSU and because he's not near good enough to waste a #11 pick on.
