Jamar Fletcher Visits Houston

Looks like those of us who were praying for the addition of an impact guy in the secondary via free agency aren't defeated yet.  I'm joking, of course.  Nevertheless, former first-round draftee and cornerback Jamar Fletcher visited Houston yesterday, and the dude sounds nine kinds of eager to be a Texan:

"I think this is a beautiful situation," Fletcher said of the Texans. "I would love to come down here and play for the Houston Texans. I know things have to be handled on a business end, but as far as I'm concerned I would love to be here and be a Texan.

"It's a beautiful place, beautiful city, met some of the coaches, met some of the players, I actually know some of the players so it's wonderful."

That's just dandy.  But wait a second...if Fletcher led his team in team in turnovers last season, and that team is Detroit, why is he even on the market?  If the guy is really a difference-maker at CB, wouldn't the Lions have locked him up?  Hell, wouldn't one of the other two teams (Miami and San Diego) he's played for have locked him up before he even got to Detroit?  I ask, because I really don't know.  Just seems a bit odd to me...

"seems a bit odd"
Sadly, "odd" would still be a huge upgrade in our secondary.

I'll comment again later, when I stop crying.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Nice
with the 90's SNL reference

Just look in the mirror and tell yourself:
"I'm good enough. I'm smart enough.  And doggone it, people like me."

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Sigh...
From Rotoworld:
Texans signed CB Jamar Fletcher to a two-year, $2.3 million contract.
That's quite a bit to pay a career reserve. Fletcher will push Petey Faggins for nickel duties if the Texans can find a capable starter opposite Dunta Robinson in the draft. If not, they could be in big trouble yet again.

Yeah, not excited.  Please play again.

RE: Career Reserve
I'm not sure how many minutes he played per game (which would be a nice stat to know), but his NFL "Player Profile" shows that he played 13-14 games just about every season.

it also shows
three INTs, one for a touchdown, last year.

maybe somebody should ask the Detroit SBN blogger about him... <touches finger to nose>

Done and Done
Just e-mailed Sean over at Pride of Detroit...
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Detroit's Response...
As promised, here's Sean's thoughts on Jamar Fletcher:

"Jamar Fletcher only spent one season in Detroit, so I don't know a great deal about him.  As a Lion in 2006 though, he was an interesting player to follow.  Although Fletcher showed many great things while on the field, he never was able to work his way into a strong role on the team.  Despite injuries in the secondary, Fletcher only started in 2 games I believe, and then on the final depth chart of last season, he is listed as a backup.  With everyone healthy, according to the depth chart, Fletcher would've likely been the 5th CB.

It really is up and down for Fletcher as far as where he plays.  Don't get me wrong, he is a solid cornerback and probably will be very good in Houston, but I wonder why he didn't play more.  The talent certainly looked to be there, but he did miss 3 games altogether last season due to not playing.

The reason the Lions are letting him go is basically because he is a backup.  Even though this is the third CB to depart in the offseason, meaning the Lions are very thin at that position, I can see why it happened.  Detroit coach Rod Marinelli is trying to weed out the players that aren't to his liking or don't buy into his system of coaching, so that could be why also.  In the end, Detroit probably just didn't see a reason to re-sign a player that was only here for a year and looked like he wanted to move on.  Although he did contribute a bit in his time on the field, it was done in an inconsistent way."

Call me a glutton for punishment, but this makes me feel better about the signing.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Thanks to Sean for the info
And now for the Pot calling the Kettle black...

I don't know enough to state whether Fletch should have started/played more w/ Detroit....but I do know enough not to trust all their personnel decisions.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

agree...
fletcher is a legitimate nfl corner;faggins is not. simple as that. As far as the "wow" factor is concerned, you're not going to get an all-pro at every postion. I'd settle for sound, competent and savvy, which fletcher definitely is. as such he is a hude upgrade over the alternative.
