Jason Simmons Is A Helluva Guy

All too often we fans lament the conduct of professional athletes.  Sometimes, it's well deserved; there are far too many stories about Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, and Tank Johnson to think that the misbehaving professional sports star is a myth.  But there are occasions when guys that get paid to play a kid's game do the right thing, and Houston fans are lucky enough to have one of those guys here in town:

"The tradition around the NFL is that if you want someone else's number, you pay them.

When [Ahman] Green finally asked, [Jason] Simmons shocked him.

"He said, 'Sure, but I'd like you to make a down payment on a single-parent home through a foundation or charity,' " Green said. "I was like, 'Yeah I'm all on board. That's easy. Tell me where to write the check to.'

"So instead of putting the money into his pocket, he's going to put in into somebody else's home and help them get their life started."

Bravo, Jason Simmons.  You've made it a little easier to tolerate the Pacmans of the world, and a whole lot easier to root for you and the Texans.

"It's kind of tough for me to take money from another guy," Simmons said. "I don't need that. We'll go out and help the community, because this city has stuck by us. If we can go out and show that we're with the community and we appreciate all that they've done, I think it's a good thing."

I absolutely love the "giving back" mentality.  Thanks Jason & Ahman for making us proud.  And here's to hoping they have started a new tradition for the Texans.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Nicely done, JSim
That is awesome.  Of course, ESPN will give this story roughly 1/234283948231098th the airtime they've given Pacman and Tank and the like.

Or roughly 1/234283948231098th of the airtime that the Texans are the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

Yes, I am pissed (not at you, MDC, but at ESPN).

That was a painful comment to read. Someone needs a hug. Maybe Shake will oblige, I'm not really the touchy feely type.
I think people should have to earn a Superman tattoo, by getting shot in the chest first. You know, just to make sure.

re:
sniff But I like the muscular types, TPL.

It was nice to see ESPN at least make a mention of this, and it was also nice to see a blurb on Deadspin.

I guess I am more optimistic this year.  If nothing else, it'll be a fun defense and special teams to watch.  So when I see the hate - hate I don't think based on facts but on "gut" - I get a little ticked, which is what the previous diary did to me.

I swear
it wasn't me that tickled him...
