Texans Sign Last Draft Pick First

The Chronicle reports that Zac Diles has signed a four year deal worth $1.72M, including a $56,915 signing bonus. The deal could become more valuable if Diles plays in 35% or more of the plays in two seasons prior to 2010 based on an escalator clause built into the contract.

Pardon my nerdiness, but if the Chronicle's report is truly accurate (I'd say this risk was massive if Megan Manfull was not the author of the report in question) such that the escalator kicks in if Diles plays in at least 35% of all "plays", would that not include offensive plays as well or is it just limited to defensive and special teams plays, in which he is obviously much more likely to participate? If you say for the sake of argument that there are 100 plays in a game, split 45 offense, 45 defense and 10 special teams, then it seems like that 35% barrier would be a pretty elusive one for most players other than the primary core (Schaub, Carr, Andre, Dunta, DeMeco).

God I hope not. Because that would make Charlie a very jealous boy. I just don't think he could take the heartbreak of losing Scott's affection.

Do they still have Lynch Mobs these days? Call me old fashioned, but I think this is just the home remedy that may be needed.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Scott's just going through separation anxiety now that the "crown jewel" of his idol's era is no longer with the team. Give him time to grieve.

With regard to the 35% argument, I fear that it might as well be 2%. Diles is going to have an awfully tough time making the squad.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

I would not be surprised to see Diles follow the footsteps of Charlie Anderson, Dashon Polk or Shawntee Orr and be a very significant player on special teams and backup defensively.

The ghost of David Carr will haunt the gnarly turf of Reliant Stadium for 100% of the team's plays until Matt Schaub is able to convince the fan base that this is a new era. I think his teammates are already convinced, which leaves me encouraged that it won't take too long to convince the fans, who are desperate to be persuaded.
