RB, secondary help, LT
still a long way to go until the season starts, but I think we mostly agree that those are starting talking points.

possible picks at 18
I think at 18 we will be looking at these options:
RB Jonathan Stewart-Oregon
LT- Ryan Clady-Boise State
S- Kenny Phillips-Miami
CB-Aquib Talib-Kansas (I dont see M. Jenkins of OSU available)

Which of these will we go with? Any other suggestions?

by curtisdisco on Jan 1, 2008 6:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

clady
thanks for informing the resident dumbass.  umm, that's not even sarcasm or anything.

clady would be nice.  I think the RB depth is such that we can take one with our second pick.  But, what about the secondary?  Damnz, I'd love to have a 2nd rounder this year.  It just feels so damn close.

Re: Clady
He'd be a great pick at 18, assuming Baker, etc. are gone.  Regardless, I have to think Smithiak goes secondary or OL (LT?) in Round One.

RB in Round Three or later.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Curious
Do you think we'll ever see Charles Spencer play a meaningful down for the Texans?

re: Barbaro
God, I hope so.  I still stick by my claim that he could be better on 1 leg than our other "LTs" on 2 legs.
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

No doubt
Spencer is an interesting wild card, too.  I still like the idea of drafting an LT, even if he is on schedule to come back.  Worst case, you move one of them inside to take the place of Pitts/Weary.

by MDC on Jan 2, 2008 10:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Clady, etc.
I agree that Clady would be a great pick there.  I also think that Michael Oher slides that far, though I am not yet sure which of those two guys I prefer.

As far as secondary help goes, I think that will all depend on Dunta's rehab.  The latest has him ready at some point in the 2008 season.  Knowing that--and seeing how Fred played over the last quarter of the season--do you really want to use your first round pick on a guy who is not likely to play?  Unless, that is, they have decided to move Dunta to safety when he comes back (which I actually think is a decent plan if he's slowed at all by the injury).

Re: RB.  If none of the tackles are available, I really wish the team would consider trading down or at least pause to consider drafting a RB over a DB.  A Felix Jones or a Jonathan Stewart makes way more sense on our roster than an Aqib Talib, right?

In the third, if we go OT in the first, I say go best-available between DT, SLB, S.  In the fourth, best-available against, with RB replacing whichever spot we took in the third.

As for Mike Hart, I love the guy and always will, but he's not what this team needs.

Re: 2nd Round
Your local broken record here, just saying that I wouldn't mind trading back to pick up a late 1st and a 2nd this year.  If nothing else, the vast number ofr 4 & 5-star RBs this year should make it a possibility.
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

that would be sweet
And it sounds like our 2007 BRB community draft strategy, as well.

What about
a mid-round flyer on Mike Hart.  I know he has issues which render him a mid-round pick at best, but he looks pretty good in that stretch play.  If Dayne is quick enough to the hole, isn't Hart?

by Scott on Jan 1, 2008 9:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Re: Hart
He's going to be a really interesting case.  While I don't see anyone reaching for him in Round One, I could easily see him going in Round Two (where, of course, the Texans do not currently have a selection).

If he's there in Round Three, do we take him?  I say no.  Round Four and later?  Heck yeah.

I don't want him
He's a great player with lots of...toughness.  But for a position at which there have been a lot of Texans injuries, I don't think Hart is a possible answer.  He'd be a good #2 back to a speedster type, say Felix Jones?

Tashard Choice
The stud RB out of Georgia Tech?  He'll surely be around at No. 18; hell, he might even be around as late as Round 3, with all the freaking RBs out there.

What say you?

I don't hate it.
I think he will almost certainly be there in the third, so if we whiff on all the free agents and decide we are not drafting a RB in the first under any circumstances, then we could do a lot worse than Choice.  I'm going back and forth on the RB issue.  Part of me wants us to go with a homerun hitter like Jones or Stewart at 18.  The other part wants to see who we can get in free agency and use the draft to fill holes like DT, S, etc.  Dunno.  So maybe splitting the difference and drafting a back late is the way to do it for now.

by MDC on Jan 3, 2008 12:01 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

RB stock is deeper now
Jamaal (American) Charles has entered the draft.  He got his evaluation back and liked the results.  For anyone who likes homerun hitters, he will probably be around for our 2nd round pick.

by BigTexBD on Jan 3, 2008 12:58 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Captain Obvious here...
And we still don't have a 2nd Round pick.

But JC entering the draft will definitely slide another good running back into the 3rd Round.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Jan 3, 2008 7:25 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and this is why....
It might be a good idea to trade down in the first, pick up a 2nd or high 3rd, get the top OT/S out there in the first and nab a RB with the next pick.

And, to be honest, I wouldn't mind dropping a ton of money on Asomugha.  Yes, I know we will (hopefully) get Dunta back, and Bennett wasn't bad, but we could really stand to replace Hutchins, put Asomugha opposite Dunta, and put Bennett in the nickle package while he learns.

Re Dunta
You guys probably have better info than I do on the subject, but I'm hearing Dunta won't be ready to play until about halfway through the '08 season. And  when he does return, there is a possibility we play him at safety.

by knave64 on Jan 3, 2008 8:24 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

bah
I didn't submit the previous post in the right place. It was in response to BFD's discussion of the wisdom of addressing the CB and RB positions in the draft while we could use free agency to cover one of those holes.

I think mid-year is right
But...OK, interjecting major personal feelings here (YMMV, do not apply directly to skin)...

As the proud owner of six knee surgeries - a couple major including a Grade 3 ACL, MCL, and patella tendon - even with modern medicine, I strongly believe Dunta will lose a step.  Add that it looks like mid-year at earliest, we are looking at heading into 2008 with almost the same defensive backfield.  If that isn't enough to make you hurl your cheerios, I don't know what is.

We cannot count on Dunta in 2008, and I think we need to hedge our bets by getting a true shutdown corner - or something close to that - because Smith cannot adapt otherwise.  I hope I am wrong, but I don't think Dunta will be the same player before and after the surgery.

by bigfatdrunk on Jan 3, 2008 8:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm completely in agreement
I certainly won't complain if we drop major cash on Asomugha.

late comment
Kinda forgot to comment when I was initially thinking about it, but what have been the rumors about West Fuckin Virginia's man child fullback Owen Schmitt's NFL value?  He's a guy I want on our team.  He can run, he can catch, and he wipes his ass with linebackers.

Mid-rounder? Help me out here.

by BigTexBD on Jan 4, 2008 6:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I love Owen.
Prior to his faceraping of OU, I didn't hear anything above 5th round for him.  After, I saw one website that had him early second.  I am guessing that he will be late second/early third unless he turns in some sort of ridiculous (for a FB) 40 time.

by MDC on Jan 4, 2008 6:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

BTW
He holds the WVU record for hang clean with...wait for it...525!!  His power clean is 365 and his squat is 640.  He also runs a 4.57.

In short, he's a goddamned mutant.  I think I am developing a mancrush.

by MDC on Jan 4, 2008 6:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Add one more to the bunch
The only thing better than one goddamned faceraping mutant is a team of goddamned faceraping mutants.
