I'll preface this by saying that I don't believe there's any way that Richard Smith will not be the defensive coordinator of your Houston Texans in 2008. The fact is that he led a defense that saw its secondary completely crippled from nearly Day One to contributing to a franchise-best 8-8 record. On that basis alone, there's no way his job security should be in question. It isn't, and it won't be.

But hell...it's the offseason, which means it's time for speculation to run amok. It seems like Gregg Williams will be available in short order. If you're the Texans, do you make a play for the defensive guru (and former head coach of the Bills)? Or are you content with what you've got?

I trust in Kubes

I would be very surprised if Kubiak sticks with Richard Smith. I think the addition of Frank Bush last season and Ray Rhodes this season are designed to develop Richard S. into a better DC for the long haul.

But what the heck do I know?

I started the confusion. I meant to say I would be very surprised if Kubes doesn't stick with Richard Smith.

Additionally, "addition" in my 2nd sentence should've been plural.

Unfortunately

I feel like Kubiak is just too nice to fire anybody, so he just creates a new job title instead and hires whoever he really wants. I predict that five years from now Richard Smith will still be our "defensive coordinator" in name, but we'll have hired some big name to be our "assistant to the executive vice president of custodial affairs and retractable roof management 3rd battalion", and he'll run the show on defense.

Assistant Head Coach

Agreed. You could just brink in G. Will to be "Assistant Head Coach" just like Sherman. It wouldn't hurt, and besides I think Smith needs some help with his um.. defensive "strategy".

Sherman only took over as the official OC because T. Calhoun bolted for Air Force.

Limit

There is a limit to the number of Assistant Head Coaches you can have. I don't recall the exact number, but it may be just one. Isn't A. Gibbs being labeled an AHC?

Williams

I have a very good friend who is a Skins fan and all I've heard is bitching about Williams for the last couple years. Now, again, given that Smith is the Petey Faggins of DCs, anything would be an upgrade, but I think the Ray Rhodes hire was made mainly to help Smith.

I'm rambling. Short answer, no, I wouldn't go after Gregg Williams. My guess is he gets the HC job with ATL or STL.

Another name for the rumor mill...

How about Mike Singletary for DC? I'm not paying attention to the portion of this article discussing his possible interest in being the next HC in Houston, but I would think becoming the DC of an up-and-coming team with Dunta, Mario, Amobi and DeMeco would be more attractive stepping stone to a HC position than in San Francisco, which appears to be a team headed in a downward spiral moreso than on the cusp of the playoffs. For the record and without reviewing the numbers in depth, I'll say Richard Smith did enough in the last quarter of the season to earn another year, especially with the addition of Rhodes to help out.

Living off his Name

What has Singletary ever done as a coach?
Why bring in another person with no Head DC experience? I hear his name mentioned all the time for possible jobs, but he's never been anything other than a Linebackers Coach. I know his offical title is Assistant Head Coach at San Fransisco and wow look how good they've done over there! Bottom line is, he's never had to put together his own defense. I think he has a lot of friends in the league who promote him for these Jobs but he's never been hired for a reason.

I could be wrong,

but I think John Harbaugh, the new HC for the Ravens, was the Eagles Secondary coach, and has never been a coordinator, although he had been Special Teams Coach until this last season.

I doubt that the Texans would hire anyone who is a threat to become the next HC. If they backslid next year, you don't want the Gregg Williams bandwagon rolling down Kirby.

Kubes not affraid

I think Kubes has shown he's not affraid of something like that happening. I do think the difference here is that He was friends with Sherman and Gibbs. I'm not aware of any prior working relationship between Kubes and G. Will.
They could know each other, who knows?

Kind of off the topic

but relative to the new hirings, this bit from McClain. "Hey, I'm told that new Texans coaches Alex Gibbs and Ray Rhodes don't like to do interviews. Hummmm. I want to get them in the Chronicle, on Chron.com and on 610. I'll send Anna-Megan. I haven't seen anyone turn down a request from her." Why? Everyone loves to get interviewed by no knowledge, giddy twats? I'm sure the spot between her and Rhodes would be chock full of football knowledge and discussion of his defensive schemes. I bet the first salvo would be something like, "So, you grew up in Mexia....". Douches. No one turns down Anna? Riddle me that.

The Czabe

I was listening to Steve Czaban, who's out of Wash D.C. on Fox radio, and the dude was livid about 1. Williams getting passed over as the new HC and 2. about his out and out dismissal as DC. His point was that in 3 of the 4 years as the DC, Williams had a top ten defense that was pretty much the reason for their recent playoff runs.

Ironically enough, the Czabe is so disgruntled over the mismanagement of the Redskins, that he wants to jump ship and become a Texans fan. Speaks to two things: 1. Williams is worth his salt as a D.C. and 2. The Texans' train is rolling - and as it picks up speed in the next two years, you're gonna have a lot of people trying to climb aboard... if for nothing else, to rock that badass steel blue uni.
