BREAKING NEWS: Texans Sign Jacques Reeves

As you might imagine, I have mixed feelings about this.  But this is no time to worry or stew; as I do every time I question a move, I quote the sig line of the notorious Shake:

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Of course, this isn't a draft pick, but the same logic applies.  Here's to Jacques Reeves becoming a lockdown corner for your Houston Texans.

Petey Faggins 2.0!
Good Luck!  I wish I could say I was sad to see Jacques Reeves leave the Cowboys, but in all honesty nothing could make me happier.  If you signed him for more than room and board at the local La Quinta, then Jacques Reeves got away with highway robbery.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery for Dunta because the thought that Jacques Reeves could be the Texans starting CB should give every Texans fan nightmares.

Unfreakin' believable
$20 Mil for 5 years. I haven't yet seen any indication of how much is guaranteed, but that is a mindblowing figure for Petey Faggins v2.O. What has happened to Smithiak?! I sure as hell hope he/they know(s) something I don't.

Somewhere On Richmond
It is raining $1 bills on some lucky strippers tonight.

Freedom Reeves
Fucking great.  I mean, I know I said that anyone (including 1Tex while drunk) could play corner better than P-Fag, but this is going to test the hell out of my theory.

by MDC on Mar 1, 2008 9:41 PM CST   0 recs

Yay!
We've signed Petey's Dallas equivalent!  Sigh...

by Leein3D on Mar 1, 2008 10:40 PM CST   0 recs

umm
Fuck.  Casserly is gone, but his spirit haunts the front office.

Petey Lite
Not sure how I feel about the Reeves signing, considering how big a laugh I got outa watchin' him eat grass in Pre-Season when Owen Daniels threw 'em a juke move that I mighta been able to read.
Poor Petey's better at Fetch than Catch.

From ESPN's FA Round-Up
Falcons sign Von Hutchins to a 4-year $9 million deal, and the Fins picked up Charlie Anderson.

Ghost of Petey Faggins
It remains odd if not outright funny that a certain Tim (of Battleredblog fame) managed to brainwash himself from initially (and correctly) believing the signing to be a serious mistake to being a smart, informed decision by the Smithiak braintrust all in the span of 20 minutes while waiting for a cab at the Houston Rodeo.

Far be it from an outside observer to accuse Tim of being a man who has resigned himself to towing the company line (and bowing before all things Smithiak), but as a person who has suffered serious pain watching Reeves play ... I can honestly say that signing Reeves (especially if he assumes a starting role) should raise a few eyebrows.

Good luck boys and girls - I hope the Reeves experiment works out better for the Texans than it did for my beloved Cowboys!

Hm.
I'm okay with us getting some more depth.  It's not like this guy is going to start.

However, I'm pretty upset we lost Hutchins.  He wasn't great, but he signed with Atlanta for peanuts, and he was versatile.  I wonder why he wanted to get away from the Texans so bad?  His contract with ATL is so cheap, I can't imagine we couldn't do better, especially with how desperate we are for DBs right now.

Cost of depth
$4 Mil per year not to start?

RE:
You think he's the only player in the league making that kind of money to provide depth?  Please.  The Texans are desperate for DBs.  I'm sure they told him he can compete for a starting job, but unless our upcoming drafted CB seriously sucks, I can't see him being the starter.

Jacques
I didn't watch the Cryboys this year, 'cept when they got beat in preseason by the owners of the goveners cup, so I don't know what to think of Jacques. Here are my thoughts:
  1. How do you pronounce his first name? Jacks? Jackees?  He obviously needs a nick name.
  2. He was smart enough to leave that southern Oklahoma town of Dallas, so that makes him smarter than Romo. We're not gettin a total idiot.
3:He negotiated a great contract with the Texan management, who have a pretty good record on player movement, so he must be better than some folks seem to think.
4:If this attracts more damn cryboy fans to this site, then it wasn't worth the money.

re: Easy Nickname
I'm pretty sure that JR is going to be the easy one to remember.  I mean, the guy is coming from Dallas.

Plus, if he ends up blowing Matt's theory about anyone being better than Petey, then it leads to the "Who shot JR?" analogies.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Mar 3, 2008 7:58 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

The real question...
It's not like this guy is Andre Davis-esque; ie, a highly touted draft pick who never lived up to his potential. He was a friggin' 7th round pick! Why not just use our seventh-rounder on a CB and pay him 500 grand a year instead?

by Nashmeister on Mar 2, 2008 11:54 AM CST   0 recs

I think I have the answer.
My guess is that Rick Smith likes surfing the Texans blogs during his workday and he knew that this would cause much posting, thus giving him something to read at lunch.

by MDC on Mar 2, 2008 1:25 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

damn
you´re right! For only 20 mil he can get some press coverage (at least a paragraph in the Chron), and then some interesting info from the bloggers. Brilliant!

by 1Texan on Mar 2, 2008 3:00 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Little does he know...
I'll gladly bitch about new players and take cheap shots at Pancake and Co. for much, much less.

Seriously...like $5.

by MDC on Mar 2, 2008 9:09 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

And now for the low-brow stuff...
We could have done worse, right?

I mean, he's got to be better in coverage than his cousin Christopher.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Mar 3, 2008 8:05 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

If he is...
then he has Petey beat by a long shot.

by MDC on Mar 3, 2008 8:57 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Ain't mad atcha
Computers and me didn't mix this weekend.  No reason, just didn't.  So I read the news of JR's signing over some bacon and toast yesterday morning.  I didn't hear an angelic chorus, that's for sure, but I'm not mad at the deal.  I wish we would have gone after a more proven CB -- especially for that kind of jack, but apparently he impressed the coaching staff enough to go get him.  That being said - all signs now point to Smithiak drafting a CB early.  Depending on who is on the board, it will probably be a day two pick unless we can figure out a way to swindle someone out of a 2nd rounder.

So much for my DE/RB rundown.  Cue the 2Pac.

To DE or not to DE... that is the question.
