BREAKING NEWS: Quinn Gray To Sign With Texans
According to the player himself, it's going to happen (and a special tip o' the cap to our boy Chris at Houston Diehards for bringing this story to light first on the non-traditional Texans fan blogosphere:
"My agent (Drew Rosenhaus) has an agreement in place. It's a one-year deal."
McClain's article (first link above) says the contract is for $645,000.00 and includes a relatively paltry $40,000.00 signing bonus. Put me squarely in Chris' camp on this one in that it's an awfully low number for someone who has a track record as a proven No. 2 QB. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Gray's contract reeks of No. 3 QB money. So does that mean that I'm backing off my earlier assertion that the addition of Gray means that Sage will be dealt? Absolutely not. I'm still not buying the idea that your Houston Texans are going to carry three (3) quarterbacks in 2008 and/or that Gray would come here to be third on the depth chart. I firmly believe that this signing means Sage Rosenfels is destined for a new home; my only concern is whether signing Gray before trading Sage hurts the Texans' leverage (as first expressed here by Solis in the previous link).
On that note, I'll open up the floor for discussion. If Gray actually signs, do you like the move? Does it spell the end of the Sage Rosenfels Era in H-Town? Is the team showing premature faith in The Schaub? Betting there's already a trade offer for Sage Smithiak likes on the table? Is bringing Gray on board simply a case of further thinning out the market in the hope of driving the price for Sage's services up? Have I closed this post with too many questions?
Update [2008-3-24 15:8:32 by Tim]: The deal is done. Quinn Gray is a Texan. Will Sage be one much longer?

Quandary
A guy on another message board who seems to have a lot of insight into the Texans organization suggests that Quinn is trade-bait for down the road a bit (i.e., to be dealt to a desperate team during training camp). I could also see them hanging onto Sage until they know whether Quinn can play in this system. [Hello Vikings, it's July and your QB situation still sucks. Coach Childress, how is your job security after two years of little progress? How about Sage for a #2 now?]

I'm full of questions myself...
What does Quinn know about the Texans QB situation that we don't?
How does Quinn's Agent still have a job? He could have re-signed with the Jaguars for far more than this and be just as close to a starting job. It seems like someone thought that Gray would be in higher demand...
Anyhow, you're getting a smart backup quarterback that can come in if you need him and win games. Jacksonville went 3 and 1 with Gray last season, and only one of those was a complete "run the ball to death" game (Tampa Bay). I'll miss him, but I'm full of questions as to how this played out.
Of course, I hate to see the guy go to a Division Rival, but I'd assume that Matt is "the guy" in Houston...right?

Makes me wonder...
It's all speculation, but the comments from the Jags faithful and Gray unabashedly stating his desire to be a Texan, make it seem as if he wants to come to Houston so he can go at J-Ville twice a year, even if its in a periphery role.
A scorned QB maybe?

re: Conspiracy Theory
This still doesn't really explain the $$, but I'm guessing we'll know more once we know the intentions of Smithiak regarding Sage.

Is it possible?
That way it wouldn't tip management's hand regarding the plans for Sage?

And the Wizard of Id watchman says,
I scoured the Vikings blogosphere; neither their city's newspapers nor their blogging fanbase has made mention of any trade talks involving Sage.
If something is in the works, their network of brodcasters is either oblivious or keeping mum.

Kubiak
Coach Kubiak on trading Sage:
"I know what people are saying, but signing Quinn has absolutely nothing to do with it. I've been a two-quarterback type of guy, but what happened to us last season scared the heck out of me, and I don't want to go through that again."
I don't know if I necessarily buy idea that he's seen the error of his ways -- that he's a changed man -- that he's seen the light. My guess is that he still tries to make the team better in another area if the right opportunity presents itself. Tyler may have been on to something with his draftday premonition.
Nonetheless, it can all be viewed as a win-win. If someone makes an unrefusable offer for Sage - then we reap the rewards. If we have to keep all three all year - then the worst that happened is that we spent slightly over the league minimum for a proven backup. Not a shabby prospect either. Keepin him is like shelling out an extra 3 bucks a pay period to add dental coverage to your health insurance. It's comes cheap and its there if you need it.
