Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

From The Absurd Speculation Files...

Word is that our friends in Miami are dying to get back into the first round for a shot at one of four (4) players.  And the bait for other teams is one Jason Taylor.

Your Houston Texans have a first-round pick that would likely allow Tuna & Co. to get one of at least three, maybe all four, of their alleged targets.  So here's the question if you're Smithiak:  Would you trade that eighteenth pick for the right to have Jason Taylor serve as a bookend to this guy for the next two (2) years?  That's how much time is left on Taylor's contract, and there's always the chance you could re-sign him if the marriage worked out.

Then again, Taylor is thirty-three (33) years old.  And he has $17,000,000.00 coming to him in 2008 and 2009.  But wouldn't it be worth it to have a DE tandem of Taylor and Super Mario terrorizing opposing defenses for the next couple of years?  Wouldn't such a move make the secondary significantly better by virtue of not asking them to cover the opposition as long?  Isn't Jason Taylor likely to provide more of an impact for the next two (2) years than whichever rookie you get at No. 18?

Awfully intriguing, isn't it?  For a team trying to build with youth, acquiring a guy on the wrong side of thirty doesn't make much sense.  But you'd have to think about it, wouldn't you?  And if your top targets at CB are off the board when you go on the clock at No. 18, I'd be thinking long and hard about it.  Especially if Miami was desperate enough to throw something else in.  Say, the later of their two (2) second-round picks (No. 57 overall) or their third-rounder (No. 64 overall).  That's probably more than the Fins would be willing to part with, but a man can dream.

It's not the slightest bit intriguing, to me.  A team that would consider this move would be the kind of team that is 'one player away' or is a legit Super Bowl contender RIGHT NOW, because of Taylor's age.  The Texans are neither of those.  Not just no, but hell no.  Not for our 18th pick, anyway.  It's very unlikely that there won't be at least one player of value available to us at LT or CB.

Now, if Taylor was 30?  I'd think hard about it... but if he was 30, they wouldn't be trying to get rid of him.

I agree HDH, we already have a couple of running backs that go to Dennys and order from the senior menu and are eyeing the benefits of an AARP card. Besides, there's already enough tension between the other two models on the team.

Nope
Although what does intrigue me is their two 2nd-round picks, or their 2nd (32nd overall) and 3rd. Their other 2nd-round pick belongs to the Chargers, I believe, so that would be 57th or so. Still, not bad.

But I don't think Miami is in a position to start trading away volume.

D'oh
And you already mentioned that. I should really finish reading posts before I wind up repeating what somebody already said.

My Offer to Miami: Straight up Deal
Taylor for Sage.
     -or-
Our 1st for both their 2nds
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

DRAFT!!!
You know - for weeks we've been going round and round about all this draft stuff, and my interest has kind of been flatlining.  For whatever reason, all of a sudden I feel like Saturday is Christmas.  I'm SO excited about it now.

Taylor for Sage?  No way they would do that, but if they offered, I'd probably jump on that, then try to trade Taylor for a low first or second.

Or whatever - Mario and Taylor for a year or two would potentially be great... I'm just afraid Taylor's going to break down right away.

Taylor
Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas were the 2 guys that Miami's defense was built around. Now granted they are both a lot older and Thomas may be one hit away from being loopy but Taylor has been healthy his whole career and a playmaker his whole career. While I wouldn't give up a 1st rounder for him (even Randy Moss went for less) but a 3rd round swap or if we could get a 2nd rounder in the trade I would do it, but not for a first and not so that the Dolphins can get Derrick Harvey or some other high value player. Taylor would be able to teach Mario a lot and he would be a credible threat on the other side. If it was up to me I would do it for a 4th rounder and maybe even a 3rd.

No.
That is all.

Here's an idea!
Let's get Jason Taylor and Shaun Alexander and start building our own version of the NFL Senior League.  It'll be way cool!  They'll get senior discounts at all the 4:30 dinner buffets, and all the Matlock reruns they can handle!

Might as well change our team name to the Houston Geritols....

WE DON'T NEED TAYLOR!....Unless we get rid of Travesty Johnson....then maybe....

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

One Man's Dream
...is another man's nightmare.  Taylor has been slowly declining, and is sure to have a rapid decline any year now.  I would say that he likely plays his last two seasons, and that's that.  While our first round pick will hopefully be around for the next 10-12 years.  Absolutely no dice.

dead on
It is far too easy and common to look at the body of work of a player and think that, despite being on the wrong side of, say, 30, that player brings it like he always did. Wouldn't it be nice not to experience decline with age and the accumulative pounding one takes over a career.

by knave64 on Apr 25, 2008 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I would consider it
It would have to be something in line with Shake's proposal though.  True J. Taylor is getting up in age, but dude is still better than 90% of DE's in the league.  The only thing that would make me shy away from him is the 17 million left on his contract.  Its a dead money deal waiting to happen.
To DE or not to DE... that is the question.
