Open Thread--Day One Of The 2008 NFL Draft

We're through the looking glass now, people.  Let's do it.  Post your rants, visceral reactions, rampant speculation, prayers, and messages of hope in the Comments below.  With any luck, we'll put last year's Day One thread to shame.

And as we did last year, we'll get a separate post up for every Texans pick.  Now let us all enjoy the bounty that is the draft.

Re: No pants
Save any and all reference to being pantless until after we've secured a badass player.  Pantless exuberance - perfectly acceptable.  Pantless sobbing - well now that's just sad.
To DE or not to DE... that is the question.

Finally...
... it's here.  Lots of beer, lots of speculation, lots of crying as our preferred picks come off the board - but no pants.  None.

Click clack
I'm in and out today, all day.  I have to take my kid to a soccer game at 1:30 - will be back at 2:45ish.  I figure I'll miss the first few picks.

Now this is where this whole thing gets screwy.  I bartered my Saturday night to enjoy an undisturbed Sunday.  The Fiesta Flambeau is going on tonight.  Half a million (yes that many) people are expected to line the streets of downtown SA to cheer on the night parade.  We got reserved seats, and it's byob so that's pretty dope.  What sucks is that I will have leave here at sixish to fight the traffic.  My biggest fear is that we trade for a second rounder and I miss it.

Hey Tim, if something goes down after 630, can you hit me up on my cell and let me know, por favor?

To DE or not to DE... that is the question.

by SOLIS on Apr 26, 2008 11:54 AM CDT reply actions

Will Do
I'll be in touch if we somehow get back into the second round.

Subterfuge?
Misinformation as a tactic is employed early and often in any strategical battle plan.
To DE or not to DE... that is the question.

by SOLIS on Apr 26, 2008 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Predictions
  1. Round 1 will be C. Williams, Jenkins, Stewart/Mendenhall, in order of preference, as available
  2. They seem to be in a good spot for a trade back because they seem to be near the inflection point where the big name players are drying up. But based upon last year, if there is a player they really like at #18, they probably won't unless someone overwhelms them.
  3. I'd love to see Charles Godfrey on the team, but I don't think this is a possibility where they draft in R3

by kozanack on Apr 26, 2008 12:15 PM CDT reply actions

Re: Godfrey
I have a sneaking suspicion that he'll end up a safety in the NFL.  I think He has the skill set that lends itself to SS rather than CB.  With all that said, I think he's talented enough to be a solid pro safety.
To DE or not to DE... that is the question.

by SOLIS on Apr 26, 2008 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Godfrey
I like him a lot.  If we don't go CB in Round One and he's there in Round Three, I'll be on the horn with Rick Smith.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Apr 26, 2008 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree
Thinking that he could contribute at CB this year, move to safety in 2009 or 2010 if that is for the best. But, I don't think he is a sleeper anymore.

by kozanack on Apr 26, 2008 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

don't want to jinx it but...
this is going very well for us so far.

QB, 2 LBs, 2 DTs taken of 9 picks, none of which hurt us.

Oh, and Jax gave up the farm for Harvey, which for us, could be good.

Agreed
But BUF taking McKelvin hurt.  I think we'll get one of Williams, DRC, or Clady.  I hope.

looks like I should keep my mouth shut
and now the run on our players begins...

If the run continues, the trade back looks better.  If they stay away from our needs, we could keep the pick, so I think I'm good either way.

Disagree
I doubt we'll get any of them. Nobody's being stupid.  It's looking bad for the moment.

nobody is being stupid BUT...
with only 4 until us, did you think we'd have williams, jenkins, drc, mendenhall, albert, otah?

I think smithiak woulda taken that before the draft.

We still have a shot at Mendenhall, who is huge value at 26.  Also wouldn't be surprised with Sam Baker or Flowers.

I'm looking ahead at who needs an RB and I see obviously Dallas and maybe Tennessee.  I'm thinking Dallas takes Jenkins and Tennessee takes a WR.  Possibly Mendenhall!

But the sixth is a long shot, so here's our history on 6ths:

07 - Kasey Studdard
06 - Wali Lundy
05 - Ceandris Brown
04 - Vontez Duff
   - Jamaal Lord
   - Charlie Anderson
03 - Drew Henson
   - Keith Wright

I think this trade down may mean Flowers will be playing CB for our Texans.

Flowers is allegedly this year's DeMeco--hard worker, studies film, cures leprosy, etc.

Or, we can get Merling.

Just made the worst pick of this draft.  Didn't they just take Chris Henry in the second round last year?  How can this be anything but an awful pick?

Chris Johnson is a hybrid back who can catch.  I think they want DC's have to scheme against two very unconventional players, CJ and VY.

Not that it matters
There's no way we were gonna trade up into the 2nd for Flowers. The Texans place a higher value on the quantity of value players we all know they'll be able to acquire. There are 3rd round corners they'll be satisfied with.

by knave64 on Apr 26, 2008 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree
We could still get a good cb in the 3rd, and I figure we'll use our first of the two on that pick.  I'm wondering when the run on the second tier running backs will begin.  I'm hoping for maybe Kevin Smith with the second 3rd rounder.  He look sreally good and I expect Ray Rice and Matt Forte to be gone by our second 3rd rounder.  We should get two good players in the 3rd.

Day two
I'm looking at who we might take in the 3rd round and find the following quality players still on the board:

CB:
Justin King
Reggie Smith
Charles Godfrey
Antwaun Molden

S;
DaJuan Morgan
Thomas DeCoud

RB:
Jamaal Charles
Kevin Smith
Tashard Choice

I kind of like any two of these (at different poistions, of course).  Especially Reggie Smith or Justin King.  I'm afraid the CBs will go quick, though as well as Charles and Morgan.  But you never know.
