Antwaun Molden Is The Newest Texan!

Profile here.  Obviously, the Texans were happy to address the glaring hole at CB with this pick.  And the more I think about it, this pick smells a bit to me like Fred Bennett Version 2.0; if that's the case, we'll be thrilled with Molden.

Interesting thing to me is that Smithiak left a handful of better known CBs on the board in favor of taking Molden.  Clearly, they see something they really like in this kid despite the fact that he played at a smaller school.  Jacoby Jones Part II?

What do you think?  Fire away below.

Combine
He apparently had the highest vertical....no, I have no links.

Cue leg-work by Solis...

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

His Combine page
It shows that he had a 38.5 inch vert or something.  I'll check it out and link it.  Give me a sec.
To DE or not to DE... that is the question.

I might be wrong
I thought it was vert, but maybe not.  I know that he tied for 1st in one of the pageant skill tests.

Combine
The combine's top performers page shows him at a 37.5 vert behind DRC and Talib.  Check it out.  He's among the top 3-5 in a lot of categories.

Bench Press
That's the one.  23 Reps.

Back to my thoughts about no force-out rule anymore...

He's athletic
There's no doubt about it.  I'm way more stoked about him than I was about the Fred...  and I liked the Fred.

With all that said - I'm praying hard for the return of Dunta.

Ditto
It's a little freaky that our biggest weakness could be our strength in 1-2 years.

Same could be said
Look at our holes last year - WR/OL/RB

We addressed WR in free agency and the draft.  Now we have a rock solid corp.

We brought in the ZBS Guru and a couple of impact players in Myers and hopefully Brown.

We now have a log jam at RB.  If Chris Brown can stay healthy, he may can dance his way to the starting slot (cheesy I know) with Slaton/Walker being the change of pace.

The defensive backfield only became a serious problem when everyone went down w/ injury.  Enter Ray Rhodes and a couple of athletic speedsters in Reeves and now Molden.

The future is bright fellas.

re: Walker
I'm still calling for a healthy Chris Taylor to be a badass

Sgt. Pepper's Loney RB club
I don't know why, but in my mind Chris Taylor has always been the fifth Beatle.

What scares me
is that Kiper likes both of our picks a lot, and nobody else does.

Good point
And if we believe we can coach em up, we have a red-hot defensive backfield right now.  We got speed and size, now just coach up the talent.

money
molden is a money pick...ive been eyeing this kid for a while...as someone who is familiar with ohio hs football this kid is a diamond in the rough...originally went to toledo but from cleveland glenville high school and coached by ted ginn sr.....same hs as donte whitner, ted ginn jr., troy smith, and more....well coached, well skilled, should be a good pick...we just traded up for STEVE SLATON??????

Not Traded Up
We got this third-rounder from Baltimore in yesterday's trade for moving down in the first.

Slaton and Molden is not a bad 3rd round

No Godfrey
I guess we couldn't get lucky and get the CB with the Texans tat.... (he went to Carolina)

But I suppose this choice is just as good...

I wonder if Godfrey will get his tattoo removed?

s. slaton
do you guys really think slaton will have an impact? I sure hope so...this was a guy who was supposed to be a 1st round pick in the beginning of the year but somehow mendenhall, stewart, rice, johnson (ecu), charles, felix jones, and forte (tulane) all go before him...is that a good sign or just a sign of how deep the draft is...if the guy was really first round talent and not a product of rich Rodriguez's system i feel like he would have been taken earlier

Slaton Now On Main Page
From what I saw this past season and have read recently, I think Noel Devine had a whole lot to do with Slaton's slippage.

Slaton
curtisdisco- I think Slaton has some defintie talent but he got hurt last year and declared late for the draft this year so I think he was kinda the forgotten man of running backs this draft but he was highly effective at West Virgina and he can't be any worse than Chris Taylor or Darius Walker.

More On Molden
From Scouts, Inc.:
What he brings: Molden played at a small school and in a simple scheme, which didn't allow him to showcase his abilities. As a result, there are some concerns about his ability to make the jump to the NFL. However, he made this less of a concern with a strong showing at the combine and the Texas vs. the nation all-star game. He clearly has the size, athletic ability and speed to develop into a starting corner down the road. He should also make an impacting in the return game.

How he fits: He is strictly a potential player. Molden has good athletic skills and size, but will only make an impact in sub defensive packages and special teams. He fits better in the Texans' zone schemes rather than being on an island. He has good intangibles teams look for in young corners.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
