Per Evan Silva, writer for NBCSports.com and ProFootballTalk.com, undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver Dwight Jones, the guy who proclaimed himself to be the next Andre Johnson, has quit the Houston Texans. It’s important to note that this story has not been verified by the team, who so far has only said he voluntarily missed OTAs today, but Silva’s usually been a guy who has reliable sources.
As an admitted person who thought Dwight Jones had the talent to make the 53-man roster, I am still not surprised by the news. Jones, the regarded receiver from the University of North Carolina, went undrafted for a reason – his terrible turd-like work ethic. This was the question many had about Jones entering the organized team activities and now we know.
Jones’ departure doesn’t make the battle for wide receiver spots any clearer. After Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter at the top of the depth chart, Lestar Jean, Trindon Holliday, Juaquin Iglesias, Jeff Maehl, Mario Louis, Jarrell Jackson, DeVier Posey, and Keshawn Martin are fighting for, presumably, three spots. The Texans also will bring in Mike Sims-Walker for a workout as well.
EDIT: Fox 26's Mark Berman confirms that Jones has quit. I guess you really can't polish a turd.
