MTD has its latest mock draft up. Their current guess as to who the Texans will take with the twenty-seventh pick of the 2013 NFL Draft?
27. Houston Texans: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
Even if Glover Quin is brought back, Vaccaro is the best safety in the draft this year and could be a star as Houston's free safety. He can cover and hit, and will be forced by coordinator Wade Phillips to play with more discipline.
Despite my devotion to my alma mater, I can unequivocally say that my initial reaction to this selection, if it was to happen on April 25th, would not be positive. I have zero scouting expertise, so take my opinion with several large cubes of salt: I am extremely skeptical about Vaccaro's ability to consistently cover in the NFL.
He can hit, sure (though there were far too many instances of poor tackling this past season, a disturbing ailment that affected many on the Horns' defense, nowhere more than in the secondary). In a lot of ways, I think of Bernard Pollard when I watch Vaccaro. Pollard was--and still is--a very good box safety. But in coverage? Texans fans remember watching Pollard in coverage, and it wasn't usually a pretty sight.
Consequently, I would not be a fan of the Texans adding Vaccaro in the first round. Especially with a legitimate option at inside linebacker like Kevin Minter still on the board. What say you?
