2013 BRB Mock Draft: With The Fifth Overall Pick, The Detroit Lions Select...

With the fifth pick of the 2013 Battle Red Blog Draft, the Detroit Lions select Jarvis Jones (LB--Georgia).

There were a number of ways I could have gone with this pick, but it seemed like any other way was a reach. With Jeff Backus retiring, the Lions would be looking for a LT. Unfortunately, Eric Fisher and Luke Joekel are already off the board. Why not go for a top 5 defensive player to beef up a defense that stole our very own Glover Quin (tear). Dion Jordan was an option, and it took a few hours of deep thinking (plus the fact that I am a very passionate Georgia Bulldogs fan) to decide it was not the right decision. I feel Dion Jordan may be more of a pre-draft workout machine than an actual player.

Drafting Jarvis Jones will help offset the loss of Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril. Jones as a few questions about his spine, but he has hardly any about his ability to play football. He had 14.5 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss in 12 games. 12 GAMES! This young man is going to turn into a monster in the NFL, and he will only help a defense that is just getting better and better.

Before the draft evaluation process got into full swing, Jarvis Jones was trumpeted by many as a surefire top ten pick. Now, however, there is a school of thought that has Jones slipping down draft boards. How much of that is smoke as opposed to fire remains to be seen. What do you think of the Lions going with Jarvis Jones here?
