As the headline states, your Houston Texans signed DT (NT?) Jerrell Powe today. News via Dave Zangaro on the teh Twitterz machine. Here's a seriously in-depth and personal scouting report on Powe from Bob Gretz.
That said, let's make one thing clear: Jerrell Powe is 6'2" and weighs 331 pounds. That, kids, is a thing. Or, as Rovers McCown put it:
3...31? Can defensive tackles do that? RT @DoughertyDrew: The #Texans signed NT Jerrell Powe (6-2, 331) today.— Rivers McCown (@FO_RiversMcCown) March 18, 2014
Kidding aside (and please tip your waitress), this is a low risk/medium reward signing by the Texans. Powe was drafted by Romeo Crennel and presumably knows the system. That said, while Powe is extremely physically talented, the mental side of the game has been a huge question mark. Even with all the talent, Powe has managed just 8 tackles and a single sack over his career.
Personally, I love this signing. Powe was a monster his junior year at Mississippi, and he was one of my favorite players at the time. Some felt Powe could be a first or second round pick with a repeat performance his senior year, but Powe simply wasn't as good, dropping him to the 6th. Though he is no Earl Mitchell
's salary, Powe's a better fit for the kind of defense Crennel likes to run. Powe still has some upside, something we wouldn't get with most of the name players out there.
If Powe can put it all together, perhaps BRB's #NTLust will be quenched, at least for a short while. All hail our new 331 pound overlord!
