Several months ago, the NFL released a good chunk of its 2014 calendar. Notably absent from that calendar were the dates each team had to trim its roster before the 2014 season began. Fortunately, the NFL has released an updated calendar, and we now know exactly when your Houston Texans and the 31 other NFL teams have to make their cuts.
Here's a link to that updated NFL calendar for your review. In the meantime, these are the dates to keep in mind as training camp rolls on.
August 26, 2014: Prior to 3 p.m. CDT, clubs must reduce their rosters to a maximum of 75 players on the active list.
August 30, 2014: Prior to 3 p.m. CDT, clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the active/inactive list.
August 31, 2014: Beginning at 11 a.m. CDT, clubs may establish a practice squad of eight players by signing free agents who do not have an accrued season of free agency credit or who were on the 46-player active list for less than nine regular season games during each of any accrued seasons. A player cannot serve on the practice squad for more than three seasons.
Put another way, teams have to cut their roster to 75 players between the third and fourth preseason games, and then must trim their roster to 53 men a little less than two days after the fourth and final preseason game.
