2015 Houston Texans Free Agency News: Cecil Shorts III Signs With Houston Texans

Cecil Shorts III is that rare find: a wide receiver who actually had a good season with Blaine "WTMF" Gabbert at quarterback, and now he's a Houston Texan. Read on for more details about the Texans' newest acquisition.

Just imagine him in Battle Red, Liberty White and Deep Steel Blue, and think "he is saving us from having K-Mart on the field in WR sets."

Cecil Shorts III visited NRG Stadium today to meet with Rick, Chris, and OB, and the two sides agreed on a contract that should keep Shorts in Houston for the next two seasons.

Of course, we're almost certainly not bringing in Shorts to be our WR1 (at least, I hope not), but there's nothing to suggest he can't do the job as a WR2 and help 'Nuk out.

While our opinions of Cecil Shorts III are almost certainly colored by the series of disasters the Jaguars call quarterbacks, he was actually the fourth-rated free agent wide receiver on the market.

Shorts has averaged 58 catches for 771 yards per season over the past three years on a Jaguars team lacking consistency under center. After Jacksonville used last offseason to restock the position with Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, Shorts is on the way out. His long history of soft-tissue injuries is concerning -- and will limit his market value -- but Shorts will find work.--Mark Sessler, NFL.com

The soft-tissue injury track record is a concern, of course, but we know that our S&C team has a history of handling them, thanks to Arian Foster's hamstrings and groin.

Shorts' best season came in 2012, when he played in 14 games, starting 9, finishing with 55 receptions for 979 yards and 7 touchdowns, with a YPC of 17.8. The Jags had Chad Henne and Gabbert at QB for the season.  Shorts ended up leading the receiving corps in all categories except receptions, where he was second to Justin Blackmon.

React accordingly in the comments below, and please remember to be nice to one another.

UPDATE: We now known the terms of Shorts' contract with the Texans.
