2015 NFL Mock Draft: With The Fourteenth Pick, The Miami Dolphins Select...

The Battle Red Blog Mock Draft resumes with the Miami Dolphins making their pick. Who did they take and why?

Hmm.
Hmm.
Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

A hearty thanks to Bleyd for getting his pick on behalf of the Miami Dolphins in on time yesterday. Due to failure on the part of the masthead, it didn't get posted when it should have. Consequently, we're adjusting the remainder of the draft to reflect that the Dolphins' pick was posted at 10 a.m. on Monday instead of 4 p.m. on Sunday. If you still have a pick to turn in, please make sure to check the adjusted deadlines at the end of this post.

With that said, prepare to be wowed by Bleyd's wisdom.

With the 14th pick of the 2015 BRB Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select La'el Collins (OL--LSU).

The Dolphins' future rides on Ryan Tannehill. If he succeeds in becoming the franchise QB they hoped for when they drafted him, they'll be capable of competing for the division for years to come. In order for Tannehill to have the best chance at succeeding, he needs weapons and a line to keep him upright. I was tempted to go with WR, but with the WR class as deep as it is, offensive line simply made more sense at this point.

The Dolphins had a downright terrible line last year. Pro Football Focus rated it as the worst line in the NFL, giving up a league leading combined 210 sacks, hits, and hurries. Part of that was due to injuries. With Brandon Albert expected to return and Mike Pouncey being extended and moving back to his natural position at center, the Dolphins have their left tackle and center positions locked down for the time being. They attempted to fill right tackle last year, but unfortunately they saw a run on linemen happen before their first pick, forcing them to make a selection that most considered a reach with Ju'Wuan James. He didn't play especially well, but he's still likely to be their right tackle for the time being.

That said, their guards are horrendous. Enter La'el Collins. He's generally considered the second best lineman in the draft after Brandon Scherff and would be a good value pick at 14. On top of that, while Collins was an offensive tackle in his last year, he began his college career as a guard, showed effective play at guard in the Senior Bowl, and is projected to be more effective at guard in the NFL. Collins would be a day one starter at guard with the potential to move out to tackle should the need arise due to injury again.

Some mocks have had the Houston Texans grabbing Collins at No. 16, so seeing him go off the board at No. 14 isn't that big a surprise. What do you think of Bleyd's strategy of drafting Collins to plug in at guard immediately with an eye toward possibly shifting him outside down the road?

The San Francisco 49ers and fredy05 are now on the clock.  That pick is due to us via e-mail by 12 p.m. CDT today.
