As we wait for the new Battle Red Blog t-shirts to print ("Battle Red Blog: The Only Site On The Internet That Can #*&% Up A One-Round Mock Draft"), the Baltimore Ravens, courtesy of Three and Out, do their best to get this thing back on a logical track.
With the 26th pick in the 2015 BRB Mock Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select Jaelen Strong (WR--Arizona State).
As much as we all like to rag on Mr. Elite, Joe Flacco, he's not nearly as bad as we make him out to be. In fact, he can be downright good. However, nobody is going to confuse him for Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, meaning there's no way he's going to be able to carry a team on his shoulders. In the past two years, he's lost Anquan Boldin and now Torrey Smith, leaving him with a receiving corps comprised of Steve Smith and...well, not much else. I don't think there's any way that Justin Forsett has a repeat year, and there's no telling if Dennis Pitta can come back healthy or perform at a high level even if he does return. There's potential for a decent receiver in Marlon Brown, but with Steve Smith getting up there in age and the popularity of multiple receiver sets, you can never have too many pass catchers.
I seriously considered going with either Marcus Peters or Dorial Green-Beckham here, but considering everything that happened with Ray Rice last year, I don't think the Ravens would be looking for anyone with any glaring off field issues like those two possess. Sure, the Ravens' passing defense is pretty bad, but I think a healthy Jimmy Smith and Ladarius Webb, paired with newly acquired Kendrick Lewis, will be enough to keep them in games.
Jaelen Strong isn't considered one of the top 3 receivers in the draft, but I believe he's completely worth a first round pick. Strong may not be as fast as Kevin White or as good of a route runner as Amari Cooper, but he does possess pretty good ball skills, and with his 42 inch vertical, he has all the ability in the world to win jump balls. He's also shown that he's not afraid to go over the middle and lower his shoulder to get some tough yards. Strong doesn't possess top end speed, but he's deceptively speedy and can develop into a dangerous deep threat, which in turn will make him Flacco's favorite target. Paired with Steve Smith, Strong can be a strong No. 2 receiver, (see what I did there), before taking over the top spot in a year or two.
If Strong is as good as I believe him to be, this year's receiver class has every opportunity to be every bit as good as the 2014 class, and he will give the Ravens a dangerous weapon for years to come.
While Jaelen Strong in the first round scares the bejeezers out of me, I wholly endorse the reasoning behind this pick. And if Fake Ozzie Newsome is making it, it's probably gonna work out.
As it is patently absurd for any single team to select two players with a single pick (though I do appreciate Corzo's insistence on incorporating the analysis of both of Carolina's GMs in the post, as TexanStro and Sugel took the time to give excellent explanations for their respective selections), if any of the remaining teams truly would have picked Peat or Perriman if either was still available, please e-mail me before your pick is due and we'll figure something out.
The Dallas Cowboys and Roll.Texans.Roll are now on the clock. Or they would be, if the pick hadn't already been turned in. Check back at 4 p.m. CDT to see who's heading to Dallas in our mock draft this year.
