2015 NFL Mock Draft: With The Fifth Pick, Washington Selects...

Rounding out the top-five picks, Battle Red Blog's Reader Mock draft continues with Washington.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington, via fake general manager BriceMcCainHOF, has delivered its card to Fake Roger Goodell, who know makes this mock announcement.

With the 5th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Washington selects Randy Gregory (DE/OLB--Nebraska).

The Redskins possessed a below average pass rush in the 2014 season, ranking only 22nd in sacks. This, combined with the loss of the oft-injured Brian Orakpo, points towards the 'Skins adding a pass rusher in the draft.

This is where Randy Gregory comes in.

The extremely long, extremely athletic pass rusher from Nebraska could be just what the doctor ordered for an anemic redskins pass rush that could use a boost. Alongside tremendous athleticism, Gregory is very refined as a pass rusher, racking up 17.5 sacks over 2 years and totaling 25.5 tackles for loss in 2 years.

Gregory also measured in impressively at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, posting a 4.64 40 yard dash, 36.5" vertical jump, 125.0" broad jump, and impressive 34" arms. There is no questioning Gregory's physical prowess.

Gregory is the most refined pass rusher in the draft.  Despite his obvious flaws, such as his weight and drug test failure at the combine, he has immense potential and play-making ability that the Redskins currently lack on defense. Randy Gregory may be the biggest boom or bust prospect in the draft.  At pick number 5, the Redskins are hoping for the former.

Washington is one of several NFL teams undergoing a scorched-earth rebuild as a franchise.  Second-year head coach Jay Gruden is still sifting through the wreckage left behind by the Shanahans, including what to do at quarterback.  With this mock draft (and likely the real NFL draft) sending Jameis Winston to Tampa, there isn't another clear cut quarterback prospect worthy of a top-ten pick. Marcus Mariota was invited for a visit to Washington, but it isn't clear that he would bring anything different from what they already have in Robert Griffin III, who has struggled to fit into Gruden's offensive system.

All that being said, Washington is a prime candidate to trade down for more picks to bolster a team in need of massive talent infusion across the roster.  Without a trade partner, they must have the discipline to select the best player available at fifth overall.  As GM of Washington for this mock draft, BriceMcCainHOF is rolling the dice on a tremendously disruptive pass rusher in Randy Gregory.  Will this player reach his high-ceiling potential, or will his situation of entering the league in Stage 1 of the NFL's Substance Abuse Program prove to be his Achilles' heel and end his professional career before it even takes off?

Great pick and a solid write-up.
