Jadeveon Clowney predictably started this year’s training camp on the PUP list as he recovers from last year’s microfracture surgery, but today Bill O’Brien gave us a target date for his official return.

August 17th would be two days after the Texans’ preseason opener against the 49ers and six says before Houston’s second preseason game against the Broncos. There is no telling how much actual playing time Clowney will get before the regular season begins on September 13th, but having a return date that is roughly a month ahead of Week One’s matchup with the Chiefs is an encouraging sign that the former first overall pick will be active to start the year.
Considering that many people (including me) speculated that Clowney might not get on the field until late September or early October after his surgery was first announced, being available nearly six weeks ahead of schedule is a spectacular development.
